  1. I just found this, I am assuming it is correct... Dennis... Q: I have a horizontal cylinder on my recreational vehicle. Are OPD's available for that kind of service? : A: The 2001 edition of NFPA 58 (the LP-Gas Code) recognizes that horizontally oriented cylinders that were manufactured prior to October 1, 1998, are unable to be retrofitted with the OPD's. As a result of this fact, the Code now exempts these cylinders from having to be retrofit with OPD valves. Any such cylinder must have a label affixed to it to inform the user and the refiller that an OPD valve is not installed.
  2. It does sound like you have a leak, but it also sounds like you tank was full to the top, at least when you were driving (rear end is usually lower plus the fuilds moving around due to driving). It sound like your black water tank vent pipe might be leaking where it connects to the top of the tank, that would explain the fuild. There should be a 1.5 to 3 inch rubber grommet that seals the vent pipe to the top of the tank. Example is at: www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/rv-toilets-tanks/black-water-tank.htm Dennis..
  3. Thanks for the information on the horizontal tank, I had a gut feeling they were still legal, but did not have enough information to make the argument. I still have the 30lb horizontal tank in my shed, it even has a nice fuel level gauge and the triangle mountings (will not roll), and even some gas still in it. I had removed it from the motorhome and took it over in my car to a rental type place and when they refused to fill it I even stated it was for a motorhome. It is in great condition, I will either take it to another location or find some written information on it to present. Also, should I have no problem getting it filled at a RV park or a Flying J/Pilot truck stop, since they deal will RVs on a daily basis? Thanks, Dennis...
  4. Hello, is there any problems / issues on using a BBQ type propane tank in the RV? When I purchased my 1990 RV last year it had the original 30 pound tank that was made to sit horizontal, but I could not get it refilled due to it's age (over 10 years), so I had a brand new 20 pound BBQ tank that would normal sit vertical and decided to use that. I currently do not have any problems with it, but is there any safety issues with using a BBQ type tank? Dennis...
  5. Any chance are the legs that drop out the twist and release telescopic type? Dennis...
  6. There should be some sort of gasket between the toliet and the tank, however, there might be a couple other reasons for the smell. Did you use any kind of deoderant in the tank to help mask the smell? Also, does your toliet trap hold water in the bottom of the toliet and does your toliet add a little water after you flush? I noticed on my RV the toliet water runs a little slower than it should and I need to run the water for a couple seconds after flushing in order to get enough water in the bottom of the toliet to create a water seal, which is the best seal odors.
  7. Hello, my Odyssey does not have bunk beds, just the bed over the cab and the couch that opens up. I am planning on makes two single bunk beds, one to fit over the couch, and one to fit over the dining table. My plan is to use aluminum frames and either plywood or a composite type material for the base. The beds will be stored over the cab and will then slide into each of their places and will have drop pins to secure the beds from moving. I need to add a mount on the side of the counter next to the stove, will probably mount a 2x4. The mount over the dining room table will require more work since I have to build the mount up from the floor since the frig and heat will be in the way. This will end up giving me the queen size bed over the cab, two single beds, and the couch bed which will only be openned up half way in order to keep the hallway clear. I have three boys, so each will end up having their own bed and no one gets stepped on for those middle of the night bathroom breaks. I found an RV supply company in Elhart IN that sells single bed mattresses (6.5 feet x 3 feet x 4 inches) for $40. Later, Dennis...
  8. Hello All, My gas filler hose was crack so I purchased a replacement hose and installed it, however, I now notice it is leak a little gas right where it clamps to the tank. The hose fits tight on the tank, is it possible I have the clamp too loose or too tight? Should I of used any kind of gasket or sealer between the tank and the hose? Thank you, Dennis...

I thought that I had a 17 gallon tank on my 1990 Odyssey V6 since the truck manual stated that I either had a 13.5 gallon or a 17 gallon tank. One day I put in 14.5 gallons so I naturally thought I must have a 17 gallon tank since 14.5 gallons is greater than 13.5 gallons. On a recent trip I ran out of gas. I put one gallon of gas in to get 2 miles to the gas station and then put in 14.5 gallons, which adds up to about 15 gallons. I read somewhere afterwords that the coach builders usually remove the factory gas tank and replace it with one that fits better after the frame of the truck has been extended and the coach is fully built. 10. Hello All, I would like to hear from any Mid-West (MN, WI, MI, IA, IL, IN, OH, MO, KY) Toyota owners that would have an interest in a Mid-West Toyota Rally / Toy In. If you respond back to me with your city/state, I will work on a few centeralized camping areas and work out the details. Thanks, Dennis Indianpolis, IN
  11. Hello All, I just heard back from the Toyota dealer. The service that they provide is to give the transmission a complete trans flush by replacing the fuild with conditioner, which is to clean the transmission, then they replace the conditioner with 12 quarts of ATF fuild. The estimated price is $150. Since this is a Toyota Dealer can I assume they know what they are doing? Has anyone else had this type of service done? Does the conditioner process sound correct? Also, I need to follow up with them if they are dropping the pan to clean the built-in filter. My 1990 Toyota Factory manual states there is a built in filter in the pan that has to be manually cleaned, does this sound correct? Thank you, Dennis... 1990 Toyota Odyssey V6
  12. Sounds like you got a good deal. What kind of advise are you looking for? What questions do you have? Does the rear axle wheels have 5 or 6 bolts? Dennis...
  13. Hello, I am running with six Goodyear HT All-Season Heavy-Duty Truck Tires that I am pretty happy with. I have put about 9,000 miles on them over the last two years and they still look new, and run quite. They are 185R14C (load range C, 1750 pounds at 55psi, 1700 pounds if used as dulleys). Goodyear gives them the following ratings (1 to 10, 10 being the highest): Dry - 7 Wet - 6 Snow - 5 Off-Road - 4 Quite - 8 The six of them costed $870 out the door, and that was without any sales price or promotions. I noticed that Goodyear is currently running some promotions that could save one $40 to $80 on a set of tires. I have only used them in light snow and they did fine, but from Goodyear's own rating, they are probably average at best, but then again, you will have duellys in the rear and a lot of weight on them, so you probably would have decent traction, at least better then the rated average / 5. One of the reasons I picked the Goodyears is that a lot of dealers supply / serivce them. The Goodyear tires stores are nationwide, Sears carries them, as well as a number of other national tire chains (like Discount Tires). Hope this helps, Dennis...
  14. I also recall reading in the past that there was not a gasket, but a reddish sealer that was used. Thanks, Dennis...
  15. Hello All, I am 4,000 miles away from the 100,000 mile mark on my 1990 Toyota Odyssey (V6 - automatic trans) and read somewhere that Toyota recommends a 100,000 mile transmission service that entails dropping the transmission pan and manually cleaning out a built-in filter. Does this sound correct, and is this a service better left for the Toyota dealer to do? Has anyone had this service done by a Toyota dealer, if so, about what was the price? Also, do you know if the transmission receives a total fluid flush while the pan is off? When I purchased my motorhome last year (it had 87,000 miles on it), I contacted my local Toyota dealer inquiring about having a transmission flush done. I was advised that Toyota transmissions are NOT to be flushed and that a Flush could damage the transmission. I was advised that all was needed was to drain the transmission fuild pan every two years which would remove about 1.5 quarts of transmission fuild from the pan, along with any particiles that were laying in the pan. Does this sound correct? Thank you, Dennis...
  16. Hello, has anyone installed a trailer hitch to their rig, or did it come that way? If you did install a trailer hitch, was there any special problems that you ran into? I have a 1990 Toyota Odyssey that has a V6 and automatic transmission and would like to have a trailer hitch added to use for short trips. I live in Indiana, which is about a flat as it can be, so there will be no 10% grades to climb (I found a 10% grade East of Sheridan WY last month, which I did not know any grades existed above 8%). I would like to pull a small flat bed trailer in order to be able to tow a small motorcycle or two (50cc/120 pounds and 185cc/220 pounds) or a jet ski. Also, it would be nice to add one of those cargo platforms that attaches to a 2 inch receiver in order to carry a few of the larger bulk items (life jackets, cooler, chairs) on longer trips. Thanks, Dennis...
  17. Regarding seeing dual rear wheels on non-motorhome toyotas, in the midwest, some of the truck rental places (U-Haul for example) had a fleet of Toyota trucks with the dual rear wheels, and I have seen a hand full of toyota pickup trucks with the dual rear wheels and their tailgate was marked "1-Ton". 18. Hello All, On my 1990 Toyota Odyssey 21 foot V6, my rear window is about a 2 x 2 foot non-openning square window. I was thinking about replacing it with a window that opens, like a sliding sideways type window with a screen. My thoughts are that it would give me better ventilation in my rear bathroom (currently I only have a 14 inch roof vent), and that I could drive with the rear window open which would provide better air flow / cooling to the coach area. I use to own an 86 Toyota pickup truck that had a sliding rear window and I was amazed on the increased air flow that the rear window provided (3 to 4 times more than when closed). Any thoughts this, and issues that I might run into? Thanks, Dennis...
  19. Hello All, I noticed there are a number of Toyota motorhomes on ebay right now, but there is an 1990 18 foot Sunrader with a V6, which is the first 18 foot V6 that I have seen before. ebay item: 330153298140 Dennis...
  20. Hello All, I was in Wyoming and YellowStone the from July 22nd to August 1st and saw about a dozen different Toyota motorhomes. I did a light flash and wave and receive a wave back. I was just wondering it any of the motorhomes belonged to anyone on this site, I probably stood out a bit, I was the one with a canoe on top. I would like to exchange travel stories with anyone that seen me. Thanks, Dennis...
  21. Good to hear your rack is working for you. I completed my 4,200 trip and the ride through SD was the worst, 10 to 40mph winds for about 4 hours, the wind was blowing so hard it pushed me into the next lane about a half dozen times. I stopped twice to check out the canoe and it was solid. I think you made the right decision to go with the 3/4 inch pipe, the 1/2 inch pipe is working okay for me, but if I even put another canoe on top the 1/2 pipe might bow too much. I works fine for one canoe, but if I even decide to go with two, I will probably end up replacing the cross pipes with 3/4 inch. Dennis...
  22. Yes, that is what I am looking for. I found out that Volvo also made one, but I am still not able to find one. Has anyone one found a place to buy this type of gas container? Thanks, Dennis...
  23. Hello all, About 5 years ago I saw a plastic type fuel tank that fit into the spare tire of a Geo Tracker. It was either a 1 gallon or a 1.5 gallon tank and it was fully enclosed in the spare tire that mounted on the rear of the Geo Tracker. I can not seem to find these anymore. My thought was to buy one to install into my spare tire that is mounted on my rear bumper of my motorhome. The extra gallon of gas will me a nice bit of insurance of not running out of gas, and since it is mounted inside of the spare tire, it should be pretty protected if hit in the rear. Anyone find these? Thanks, Dennis...
  24. Just a Canoe rack update, over 2000 miles of driving 60 to 70mpg and getting passed from both directions, driving throught a rain storm and experiencing high winds, the canoe and rack are working great. Dennis
  25. I have a drain on my engine battery, but a slow one that takes a week to drain the battery. A short term fast and cheap fix might be to add a battery cut off on the engine battery. Most auto parts stores sell them (autozone) and I even seen them at Menards (hardware/lumber) store for about $5. They install on one battery post and they have a dial that you give one complete turn, which disconnets the battery. This will allow you to test if it is a drain on your battery or something major. Charge your engine battery up, install the dial disconnect, and right after you turn the engine off, turn the dial to disconnect the battery. If after a week all is well, then you know you have a heavy drain on the battery. You might want to get a battery disconnect anyway if you plan on storing the motorhome for more than a month at a time. Dennis...
