  1. This could have NOTHING to do with your problem, but I was telling my father about it, and he said my Mom's Mustang once had a funny problem that they thought was the transmission. Every time she was driving uphill the car seemed to loose all power, and was very sluggish, wouldn't shift, etc. It turned out that there was a small baffle in the exhaust system that was closing, and sticking closed (esp. uphill). It was essentially acting like a potato stuck in the tailpipe. With wet plugs I think you've got another kind of problem, but you just never know. (BTW- I had a '78 Corolla with wet plugs, and I ended up doing the head gasket, piston rings, bearing rod shells, valve seals, and temp sensor replacement...it was a lot of work, but not rocket science, and I felt MUCH better about the car afterwards.) Like all the other folks are saying, when all else fails, read the instructions...Chilton or Haynes will take you far.
  2. Toyota RV lovers that love Ratatat too?? Can this get any better??
  3. I would love to see pictures or video of these so I can figure out how they work, or how to replicate them. Thanks!!
  4. Hi! I want to start by saying I think it is GREAT that you and you wife are planning to take the kids on the road! So few kids these days get to learn by "viewing and doing". It sounds like you are getting some great mechanical advice from the awesome folks here (ALWAYS carry a good roll of duct tape!). I wanted to address the "backup" part of your plan. Stuff happens, especially on the road, and NO ONE wants this kind of thing to happen!! Carry a SPOT or some other means of asking for help, even when in a VERY remote area. Then it is simply a matter of following basic emergency prep rules. Food, water, shelter, batteries, and ENTERTAINING the KIDS! Freeze-dried food, treats for the kids, board games, books, a few hot wheels they've never seen before, and if you can snag some photo-voltaics, all the better. Keep it all as lightweight as possible, and then go have some FUN and post your pictures here. OH, and designate a couple of your friends (since your families aren't so great) as your check in folks. Someone needs to know where you are on a semi-regular basis, so that they can send the calvary if need be.
  5. If I do end up with this machine, and it does have a BW auto transmission, my Dad has worked on one in the past. YAY! Thanks again! Right now I'm waiting for more info/pics. I feel like a potential parent waiting for the call from the adoption agency. :-)
  6. Nolan!! Thank you!! I couldn't find that info anywhere readily! Do you happen to know if the automatics are problematic or not? Thanks again!
  7. Has anyone ever seen a 1975 with an automatic transmission? I'm looking at one to buy from a distance, and the seller says it is an automatic. Thanks!
  8. Hi All! I am looking at a 1975 Chinook Pop-Top. It is a long way from where I live, and I haven't a car, so I'm trying to ask as many questions as possible before I buy. 1. This truck is an automatic. I'd prefer a manual, but oh well. I didn't think the '75s came with automatics, so I'm wondering if it was changed??? 2. What kind of struts do they have? My Father mentioned that is they were McPherson type, they would be expensive to replace, as the whole thing would have to come out. 4. How available are the parts for these things? 5. The current owner mentioned a bit of rust in front of the door? I have seen this in photos before. Can this rust extend to the chassis? 6. Any other good advice for things I need to look out for? Thank you all so much!!!

This truck is an automatic. I'd prefer a manual, but oh well. Are the automatics on the '75 Hi-Lux OK? Break often? Expensive to replace? 2. What kind of struts do they have? My Father mentioned that is they were McPherson type, they would be expensive to replace, as the whole thing would have to come out. 3. I assume this truck is carb, not fuel injected. Is this correct? 4. How available are the parts for these things? 5. The current owner mentioned a bit of rust in front of the door? I have seen this in photos before. 10. Glad to hear you think it is in good shape. I would love to know the measurements (overall length on original cab, etc). Also, what is under the back window? Is it just storage? I'm not worried about privacy, as I am a mostly drive and camp person. I would probably use the local toilets, or use an outdoor port-a-pot. I'm normally in a tent, but have wanted an RV for a long time. I keep looking at Toyotas because it seems like they must be reliable. This Newport appeals b/c it seems smaller than the Dolphins, etc., but without the mechanical complications of a pop-up. What do you think a good price on it would be? I CANNOT afford to waste any money these days. :-) Thanks! Good luck with your reno!
