  1. Ok, so what if I just wanted to sell it, does anyone know what would be a fare asking price? I mean I have heard numbers all over the place depending on who I talk to. Does anyone have any suggestions for an asking price? The miles are at 87k, and new carpeting throughout, new upholstery, new curtains, full tune-up, and brand new kyb shocks all around. Everything works good, I mean everything. Any input apprishiated.

  2. Ok try going to these links and see if that works. I think it was because i posted these pics as private on accident and i dont know how to change it and i dont have them on my comp anymore.

:) I dont have any more pics of that fish, in fact if the hot chick at the fish and game check station had not mentioned getting a picture of it i would not have gotten even that picture lol, and I wanted to mount it but it had a computer chip in its nose and they cut the top part of his face off right after that picture.

  3. The spark plug ordeal; when I replaced one of the spark plugs it brought half of the threads with it. But I was able to get the new one in tight enough that everything was ok, afterwords I took it on a 300 mile round trip without a single problem and got 25mpg fully loaded. So the next time the spark plugs need to be replaced this issue would have to be addressed but otherwise should be fine I have replaced all the shocks and did a full tune-up on it. Also put a new valve cover gasket on it. I was extremely surprised how very clean it was on the inside. I was just kind of throwing this topic out there too see if anyone would be interested at all if not I wont cry because I do love this camper. I do have a bunch of inside pics that you can access by going to my profile and clicking on the gallery tab and then view all gallery files. If you really want I can take some pics of the outside, let me know what you think.

  4. I'm kind of just throughing this out there but my wife is pregnant again so i dont think the good old chinook is going to be big anuf for us anymore and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in trading me for a little bit bigger camper. Details to be discused of course, other than the spark plug ordeal it is in very good shape and gets about 25mpg. I just replaced the carpet and upholstery. If this is anything that would be possible at all let me know that you may be interested. I may even be open to just selling it I'm not quite sure yet. Tell me what you think.

  5. Hi All,

I took my 84 Dolphin on a 64 day, 8,000 mile trip this summer and it performed beautifully. Actually, my wife drove it most of the time as I was riding my bicycle from coast-to-coast. The motorhome was awesome, it was a comfortable home to our family of 6 and had no mechanical issues at all. But I got home, parked it for a month, and then tried to start it to move it- no start. I was able to eventually jump it, but only after leaving the cables hooked up for a while. Now another month has gone by and I can't jump it at all.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? I am not mechanically inclined, but it seems if it were a bad battery I would have had some issues during our trip. It sat for quite a while before our trip too and always started pretty easily. Can a battery just up and quit like that or is there likely some other electrical issue?

I wanted to check on this list before going out and spending the money on a new battery.

    Thanks

    Don

it could still be the battery, ive heard of brand new batteries up and breaking all the sudden whithout warning. i would take it out and take it down to autozone or checkers or where ever you have close and get them to test it for you before you replace it. If the battery is fine then you will know that there is a problem else where.

  6. i found a 1983 toyota helix that runs and everything i have never seen one in person before and dont know much about them i was just wondering if anyone know if they have any notorius problems that i should watch for though i think that this one will have to be pretty bad for me not to buy it because the guy only wants $300 for it. I'm going to go look at it tomorrow. I've seen some of the newer ones in magazines but never seen one of the older ones, from what i understand they have a long wheel base.

  7. You kind of lost me, do you want to put your body on another truck or put the parts under what you have? Either way I hope you have a lot of free time. Also what kind of transmission did he put in? To my knowledge there is no "larger" Toyota transmission even in a T 100 that will bolt to the 22R/22RE another consideration will be the differential ratio they have to match exactly front and rear.

Ya im not really sure eather, he told me that the gear ratios were farther apart in the new tranny or something like that that made it wider or something, doesnt make sence to me eather. The plane is to swap my 78 chinook camper body over on to a 4x4 frame. I dont think the swap would be all that hard on the long box, the short box will probably require lots of modification, im going to go over there and measure the distance from the cab to the center of the axle on sun, and he was saying that we may be able to work something out. But that something better be pretty sweet i think.

  8. ya maybe you guys are right, besides im actually in the process of tracing down my dads old 84 yota pickup solid floating axle long bed that i think would probably be a cheaper buy and a better base for the swap that i wont to do. If i can find it and if who ever has it is willing to sell it to me. But it would be a little more work because the last time i saw it, it needed a new engine. But any solid axle yota has big potential. I even know who has it but dont know his name or where he lives i just have his brothers home phone number and he does not have an answering machine, and he never answers. Hopefully i will get ahold of him though.

  9. My 77' Chinook has the same layout as fisherman120. My dad removed the couch and made a platform for a twin bed, it works great for a single person, (a bit tight for two people.) I reworked the storage area over the cab to sleep an additional person, it works fine. I think you can do most anything you want with these little campers and not get into much trouble. Good luck with your Chinook.

hey nhcamper you think you could get a pic of that area above the cab that you redid i would be very interested in seeing how you pulled that off.

  10. I bought a 74 Toyota Chinook for a pittance. Can anyone recommend a spot where I can get a "floor plan?" The Chinook part is all fiberglass with a top that pops up about 18 inches and as a rear door. There is a gas range and sink but no toilet or frige. I have stripped the old carpet and some water damaged paneling and ripped out some upholstery up by the two sky lights, However I do not have a diagram on how the bed(s) layout. It runs well and so far the only problem seems to be in the fuse or wiring to the headlights and some body work on the bumper, grill and cab. If anyone has info on the layout or on how to best repanel, I surely would appreciate it. Thanks.

i dont know a lot but i do know that they had about 3 or 4 different layouts. Mine has a single couch to the pasenger side that folds out to become a bed. There was also an L shape design and a double couch design where there was a couch on each side. Mine also has a bed that stores up in the roof and a bar swings out from the side and it lays on the top of the closets and the bar. So i guess it depends on what layout you have. I dont know a lot about the other layout only mine.

  11. Ok guys i have a big delema. A few years ago i sold a 1991 single cab short bed yota pickup to a co-worker of mine for $900. Ya i know im an idiot. But at the time i thought it needed a new engine when it turns out alls it needed was a new head. Keeping in mind i sold it for a girl. Needed the cash lol . But anyway now he wants to sell it back to me and he has put a new head on the engine and put a new tranny in it but the tranny put in it was a little bit bigger than the old one. I have no idea why and he had to cut a little chunk out of the floor and the bed is a little rusted inside now . This truck used to belong to my father who has sence passed away so the truck now has sentimental value and i think it would be the perfect base to convert my chinook into 4x4. So my question is do you think the vehicle is worth the money, because now he wants to sell it back to me for $2,800, and he said that if i dont buy it by tue. he is going to sell it to someone else, and it has about 145,000 miles on it, and it is 4x4. Any input would be helpful right now i am pulling my hair out. :headbonk: Also i think it needs a little aditional work to get it running really well.

  12. Thx a lot for all the input guys i will give it a shot when i get the time. but at the time of the incedent i had a trip planned for the next day so i decieded to brave it out and see what would happen. It turns out that i must have gotten the spark plug just tight anuf because i made a 500 mile trip without one single problem, and got 23mpg to boot. But during some of the down time this winter i will fix the problem more permenantely. thx again for all the info. O and sorry about the spelling guys im terrible at it and i could not get my comp to download the spell check :Poster_oops:

  13. ok first things first. Im going to worn everyone right now that i know absolutely nothing about part names. I know what im doing when it comes to most things that have to do with an engine but im horrible with names of all kinds. So with that out of the way i think i have a farely big problem but im not sure. Tonight i was doing a full tune-up on my 78 chinook with a 20r and one of the spark plugs i had a really hard time getting out. Well i finally got it out with much muscle :weight_lift: , lol, and i think who ever changed them last time cross threaded it and when i took it out this time it brought most of the threads in the block with it. So my question is to fix this properly do i have to replace the head? and my other question is will the spark plug be ok because i was able to put the new one in but im afraid it pushed some big shavings in the cylinder and im not sure if the spark plug will be ok in there where its not really tight. Please help. :headbonk:

  14. I have the KYB's on my Chinook. They reduced the roll by 80%, if you need tires I recommend Michelin in combination with KYB's the ride is great.

The shocks that i took off didnt work at all, they were totally shot, i cant wait to take it on a test drive to see the difference. Yea i think i do need tires because i was looking at them yesterday and they say standard load and i seen that someone was saying that they recomended rating D on the Chinook. Is this true?

  15. There is a Chinook that looks kinda dead in Hope BC in a driveway. If you are interested PM me and I will tell you where it is. I dont have and actual address or name or phone # so it will be a bit of a shot in the dark.

    Tony

thx for the info but i live in Idaho so that would be a little bit of a drive for me :)

  16. I have been looking at the chinook conversions on here and it has got me wanting to convert mine bad. I have a guy at work that has an 86 toyota single cab 4x4 short bed with tranny axles cab, everything i would need but the engine. Anyways i was wondering if it would be easier to convert if it were the long bed or if the short bed is better. Any other advise on what to look for on convert rig would be helpful. I am ready to jump into this project i just need a mentor :weight_lift: any input would be helpful THX MUCH GUYS.

  17. thx for the info guys :) if you have any idea where i might be able to pick one up for a decent price let me know . Do you Guys think i got it for a good price ? I'll post some pics later when i get a chance. A friend of mine that works on campers for a living told me today that chinook's in good condition are going for about $5,000 right now or more. ?

  18. I am also doing some work to my Chinook and i was kind of wondering what kind of stain you used and if it went on ok? I didn't think stain would work but it looks pretty good in your pics.
