  1. Soooo I started coming here before I even purchased my toyota coachmen! I have learned so much from all of you guys!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH.. it has been a labor of love but my experiences with my m.h. will stay with me for the rest of my life! Im finishing up school and moving to the east coast and have worked every angle trying to keep her but i have to reluctantly have to down size. The new site looks great! and im sure ill have to buy another one in the near future let me know what you think! http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/1117719894.html
  2. I have an 86 toyo coachmen, i was worried about it.. but i just drove across country through the rockies with my 22re 4 cyl automatic. Ran fine, just take it slow, and if you have to and get a head start haha. No but seriously i was getting about 12 mpg in the rockies and didnt really have any trouble
  3. I dont understand what u mean by the 30k thing.... If your suggesting that 30,000 is what it would cost im seriously lost.... haha are you referring to miles or that the job would cost around 300?? And has this discussion been concluded... does it have bearings that have to be packed on the rear wheels???
  4. hey Im getting ready for a big cross country trip in the fall, Im looking into getting some new shocks and does anyone suggest getting the wheel bearings pressed or new ones installed, how much would these cost, doing it yourself or have a mechanic do it?? erik
  5. Hey, I have a 86 toyota coachmen with a 4 cyln... The question of the day is that the awning or bed over the cab has clearly been damage at some point in time. It droops down in the middle coming into view of the windshield. I have juggled with the idea of stripping it apart and rebuilding it but I honestly dont have any Idea what I will find once I get down past the outer cover. wood... steel frame??? It doesnt leak or nething but my fear is that it will worsen and eventually rot out or begin to leak... Then over all its just not very ascetically appealing. Its actually really the only thing thats wrong with it.. other then That I really have NO complaints. I dont know if I could fix it better myself as it had a pretty shibby repair job done by the previous owner. ANY suggestions at all Does anyone know where I can get any replacement seals or strips the go on the joints and seems of the exterior becuase If i got of hold of some or even a good aternative I feel like that would be a start! If any one wants to see some pics Im more then Happy to post! THANKS FOR YOUR TIME Erik
  6. figured it out.. but a couple hours later the car wont turn over! I hope i wired it wrong and its just not turning over becuase i slowly drained the battery any other reasons why it wont start besides battery starter or alternator cuase it sounds like it has enough battery! ill try to jump it tomorrow
  7. So I'm about a month into owning my 1986 coachmen 4 cyl and im looovving it! one of the coolest things Ive ever bought. Ive got about 500 miles in little trips down...She did breakdown last weekend.. turned out to be a alternator belt and a 150 tow that was pretty rough on her but all in all I cant complain about a 7 dollar belt... So this weekend Im trying to tackel installing a new radio.. So i bought the harness on the book but low and behold its this crazy set up and I cant figure out what does what. I looks like the power and the gound runs through the speakers in the harness b4 going into the actuall radio. and being that I cant find a harness I prolly have to directly wire the radio in which ive never done b4. Is it worth continuing a search for a harness i cant find anything in stores or online!! If i do directly wire it, can i use the pre-exisiting wires to the battery and speakers if i know they work, or would I have to rewiring everything. is the motor home radio set up different then the same year toyota truck set up? is it worth pursuing any toyota specific sites. I dont understand why my harness does match what the book says a best buy/auto zone/ tweeter/ circut city Thanks i'm going to post some pics
  8. Hey thanks, I bought it today! pretty pumped about it haha On the test Drive I brought 5 people in it and took it up the high way. A belt was squeeling but thats it I think it was an ac belt but im planning on doing a big tune up before i take it cross country (belts, plugs & wires, air filter and maybe clean out some of the gunk in the engine if i get ambitious) We hit some hills and it seem to be rev'ing a little high but shot right up non the less OD helped alot. The temp didnt get hot at all and the engine sounded pretty solid. As far as rust goes I do live in new england and the bottom does seem a little rusty but nothing on the end of rot. My test was that all the exposed nuts and screws seemed pretty in tacked and prolly easily taken off. I dont see any water damage at all, so i dont know if that means im not looking in the right place or that it really is in good shape. Theres alot of caulk kinda slopped on all over especially on the loft bed that hangs over the cab. I ripped all the cushions off and the rug and walls seemed dry!!! However, when you sit behind the wheel the top is sagging a little in the middle. I dont know if this should concern me??? is this common?? I looks like its been repaired and pretty water tight but i dont even know what the frame is made out of. Is it somthing that I could take apart and rebuild?? Im assuming or more less hoping haha that the frame is metal so I dont know if I could possibly cut away the "bent" frame and weld in a new pipe or somthing of that nature? Im not afraid of the work and actually looking forward to the summer fix her up project I got myself into! Thanks for reading all this and I hope I can soon answer someone else's questions but for now ill prolly do more harm then good Erik
  9. Hi ive just stumbled across this coachmen and I done some extensive reseach and really like every thing I see! what it really come down to is that I'm worried that when fully equiped with water and gas ect. plus 4 or 5 people and luggage is the 4 cylinder engine going to be able to make it across country? for example.. what if i stumble across i dont know... a moutain on my 3500 mile journey. I am gonna make it up and down and still a have a working vehical?? Its a 1986 toyota coachmen moterhome 66,000 miles good condition $4,000 <---- is this a good price?? also the water heater is broken and im curious to how much that will cost and if its hard to fix Thanks for your time! loooking forward to an adventure... pending your advice!
