  1. As I recall, the larger alternator will use more gas when it is putting out full power. However, as the battery gets charged, the power use drops off. Is this correct or am I reliving the 70's again?
  2. Hearing about this altitude sensor switch is very good for me. i am going to the Rockies next summer and would have tought that the RV tranny was going to die because it would not go into OD while coasting down gradual grades. I always use the tranny for engine braking in the hills of SW WI. My Dad was a truck driver and ALWAYS told me to go down every hill in the same gear I went up or one gear lower. My Toy has a overdrive deactivation button on the end of the shift lever, would it still have the pressure switch? I have pulled trailers all over the country and have never made the brakes hot, not once. I plan on doing the same with the Toy.
  3. I am considering making the trip. I think that I would have a great time. The wife has some things planned that I would have to grovel to get out of though/
  4. the same tach will work with an 4/6/8 cyl engine. They are easy to install. Find a location that works for you, run on wire to your fuse block, one to ground, and one to a wire on your ignition.
  5. I am also purchasing a Honda 2k to run my Toyhouse when needed. I have a 6500 watt gen set but would never take it anywhere but to a job site. That thing is LOUD. The Hondas just purr along and burn very little gas. I was talking to a guy with a Toy MH at a truck stop in WI last week and he was running down the highway with hte Hondas runnig and the roof air going. He said that he could not hear the Honda and the only reason he knew that it ran out of gas was the A/C stopped. I recently went to an auction that had a low hour Honda 2k and was looking for a deal. The gen went for $1300, I can buy a new one down the road for $950 right now. Some people go nuts at auctions.
  6. I rebuilt a fiberglass camper called a Love Bug (1972 model) that looked bad with mold, rotten floors, no windows, and the door laying on the floor. My friends thought that i was nuts. Howver, with alot of work it looked great. You can do the same with you RV. Take your time, do good work, ask alot of questions. The people around this site will help youo out whenever possible. Good luck on your project and keep everyone informed of your progress.
  7. Is there a culvert close by that you can run through. Most of the cord protectors that I have seen are meant to protect the cord from pedestrian traffic. You could try making a protector out of a couple of 2x4 pieces of lumber hooked together with extra peices holding the long boards together. HOWEVER, I don't think they would last very long with vehicle traffic. I would not let my cord get run over by any vehicles, especially on a gravel road like most festivals have. Also, remember to run a heavy enough cord to run your heaviest electric load. Most people use a cord that is WAY to light.
  8. I was looking at awnings at the RV rip off joint near me. I went into serious sticker shock when I saw the price. The bag awnings have a price that I can justify. Thanks for the heads up. Bob C
  9. Welcome to the Toyhouse forum. I am also a newbe here but I am learning quickly. I have used my Toy a couple of times and I definitely love it. Retirement starts next year and I hope to use it alot.
  10. My trip this last weekend was with a 1000 pound trailer behind the Toy. I got 16.8 with it back there driving in the hills of Southwestern WI. I have put about 400 miles on my Toy so far and have average 17.0 mpg. My wife and I are going to Door County, WI later this month and will be putting on about 500 miles. I will not be pulling a trailer on this trip.
  11. I sure have learned alot around here. I got really lucky when I bought my Toy. It was in great shape with only 33,000 miles. The truck came from the factory with the heavy axle and all 7 wheels are 6 bolt. The tires are 185/14 truck tires. As I learn about this Toy, maybe I can help others out like you are helping me.
  12. That is the exact same tach that I installed in my Toy. It is made by Equus, Model 6086. Mine cost me $35. The same thing with a chrome ring is $40. I mounted mine on the left side of the instrument cluster between the pillar and the cluster. My cruise control is right his tach is.
  13. I have a 1987 Toyota Chassis with 6 bolt wheels. Are all six of the wheels the same? Do I rotate the tires and if yes, what is the patern for rotating tires? Sorry about all of thequestions but it is better to learn from people that know the answers instead of making every mistake myself.
  14. I am installing a JVC stereo in my Escaper. When I removed the old, nofunctional radiom, i found that whatever has placed there my toyota had been removed. As a result, all I have to work with was 4 wires (lamp cord. ) There wer no power line or ground wires. Not tough to run new wires but where in the heck did the original radion hook up? Was this the result of somebody with a wire cutter going crazy?
  15. I just bought an '87 Escaper and am really impressed by it's quality. I know that the Winnebagos have a reputation as being well built.
  16. I filled up today after driving about 200 miles. I was totally impressed with 17.2 mpg. I topped of the tank so that I could not get any more gas in. I hope that with careful driving and taking my time going places, I can get at least 15 locally.
  17. I just finished installing an aftermarket tack. The installation was easy. I am also half way done with installing a new stereo. The old stereo did not work. I mounted the tach on the top side of the left side of the dash next to the pillar. It is not in your face but is easy to see. My friend has been helping me and we are having a blast getting this thing totally ready to roll.
  18. I found the problem. When I removed the fan to test it, I found a huge wad of junk that a mouse had placed in the fan. After cleaning it out, everything worked properly.
  19. My '87s dash fan is not working. I can't believe that the cab only has about 7 fuses and they are all good. What do I have to tear apart to get to the blower motor or switch to start trouble shooting the problem? I also need to install a stereo because the former owner started installing one and I want to loose that one and install a really nice one that is just sitting in my basement. Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

  21. Any ideas what the cost would be at a salvage yard? The Toy is a 1987.
  22. I am thinking about adding a tach to my Escaper. It hasa 22re and an auto trans and i would like to know how high I am reving when I get into the Rockies. Sometimes the sound to my ear does not match the actual RPMs. Would it be worth the effort to install a tach or would it be a waste of time and money?
  23. I bought my Toyhouse 2 days ago thinking that it would take me forever to find everything that I need. As I cruze through this site, every minor problem that I have is talked about. I also belong to SteveSaundersGoldwingforum and they are just like this site. It seems that as long as I stick with buying classic old equipment, I can get help. I wonder how many of the giant size RV owners stop to help each other out?
