  1. I Have the Winnie Back! I did a couple of quick trips - one short up to Mt. Charleston and another up to the Decature shooting range my two favorite Overheating test drives and it did NOT OVERHEAT!. I will have to wait for the week end before I can do more of a test drive. It did cost me $701.00 but I will review the bill more closely and see if there are some charges I can dispute. Of course I could not see or talk to the Tech that worked on her - but she just purrrs! So happy :)

  2. Took Rocket over to the wheatland bluegrass music festival in Remus this weekend.

Oddly enough I almost saw more toy homes there than at ANY rally I have ever been to.

I spoke to many of the owners of the rigs and of course asked each of the ones I talked to if they were a member on this site...

I saw a disturbing pattern in the feedback on that question.

Almost everyone I spoke to considered this site and its inhabitants to be members of a "cult".

This is not the only time I got that line; heard it a few other times when I said hi to a toy owner on previous trips.

Are we a "cult"? I don't really get that accusation as in my experience, cults push away family members and excommunicate others.

One gentlemen I spoke with who refused to give his former handle said he dropped out because of "personality conflicts" with others; namely perceived hostilities from the "ringleaders" he stated.

So as a footnote and word of advice to you "ringleaders" - this is the general consensus I received at a large sampling of data.

At the festival I saw 4 dolphins, 2 huntsman, one warrior and 3 chinooks. Also, most of those I spoke with were exceptionally liberal.

Most of the toyhomes I saw were more geared at camping an not in it for the "classic restoration" of the RV; i.e they did not sport perfect paint jobs, and had a lot of battle damages. But they were there and they were fun to see nonetheless.

The festival was interesting... I got there late and most people yelled at me for that stating that I would never find a spot.

We had a spot in 15 minutes.

The campgrounds were packed to the gills and driving up and down the lanes I couldn't find anything ... except one guy that for some reason wasn't home and had... what we referred to as the "death star" camper.

This camper was so ridiculously huge that I would wager my toyhome it cost more than every thing I own put together. It was so large in fact that it had to be towed with a commercial diesel semi truck, which he also had parked separately.

how did we get the spot? I broke my rule of "always ask first"...mostly because I knew this guy didn't own the land but also because... at a non electronic festival he had a massive and I mean MASSIVE DIRECT TV TV/radar for missile defense system thing sitting there. Now I am no hippy but even I know that was likely the reason no one "squeezed in" on him.

I talked to his neighbors and they were totally ok with us parking next to them; (he wasn't at his rig).

I backed in and literally had the radar dish aiming into my window 1 inch from it. Wife was against this but relented when the hospitality people told us we were ok and good to go; regardless of what the death star owner said.

we met Darth Vadar the next day and initially he was close to asking us to leave so that he could enjoy his tv, but the neighbors rushed to the rescue challenging him instead to move his radar tower. he relented and did and we were allowed to stay. We enjoyed great music and the kids were able to build banjos and other instruments there in the music workshops.

Just figured I would report on this to you all for your enjoyment; and for the only individual on here whom I have ever had to set the sites "ignore" feature on - this trip report s for you; yes I see the world. I participate in things.

p.s. all I don't find this site to be a cult at all, but we can all be more tolerant. Even the death star guy eventually accepted us. Oddly enough it was after I flew my Gadsden; not a particularly popular flag there at all; but alas I left my greatful dead leaf flag at home.

As a new member less than 1 month - I have to say that this forum has been a pleasure and a great source of valuable information and opinions. I visited many Facebook and the yahoo groups and none of them was as valuable as this forum has been. Thank you all for responding to my many questions. I do not find this forum to be hostile or cult like and have referred it to a few others.

  3. I am glad to see this as it made me think of the consequences of a "custom paint job". We painted the exterior of our 90 Warrior with "Gator Grip" Truck Bed paint. It is a Tan color. I wanted to paint the exterior in a "Camouflage" in the newer style graphics being seen today. Not the blobs but the trees. However this would definitely make it harder to do "urban stealth camping". I may just paint the whole exterior one color so there are no defining marks to draw attention.

  4. you can go to

    http://www.toyota.com/recall

type in your VIN and it will tell you if the HG or any other repairs are available for your vehicle.

I printed this out and took it with me to the Toyota Dealership.

It helped because the first service tech guy kept referring to the "Special Policy Adjustment" which had expired. I showed them that I was covered under the "Special Service Campaign" which was still viable. The printout from the Toyota/recall site under "Campaign Definitions" says

    Special Service Campaign
A Special Service Campaign is the Toyota, Lexus, or Scion owner notification program to inform customers about specific product or technical issues for which inspection and/or repair is being offered without an expiration date. These issues are typically customer satisfaction initiatives. The described service will be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner.

Hope this helps, Thanks again to Linda S, for all the info on this HG recall

  5. From someone who is dealing with problems - I say if it's not broke don't fix it! - On the other hand if you plan on putting another 100K on your truck it will most likely need the HG done, so you may want to consider having it done while there is still the chance to have it done for free. I took mine in today and they are going to do the HG, but I have been fighting a bunch of problems.

  6. Wow, you have as much trouble as I usually do! Hope you get this figured out. Since all the normal stuff has been suggested, I have one that may be the problem. Hook up a code scanner to the truck and take a look at your fuel trim numbers. Ecu can go bad, O2 sensors can lie, and several other things can cause the ecu to lean out your fuel mixture. Lean =hot.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the info on the ECU. I will check this out!

  7. HEAD GASKET REPLACEMENT VIA THE SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN

So I printed out the Head Gasket Recall Info that Linda Provided (thank you)

And my vin number matches the SSC

So I called Toyota Corp and they said just take it in to the local dealer

I have an appointment tomowarrow at 12:00 noon for a Head Gasket Replacement.

    Wonder what will happen.

PS. I did call prior to all of this and they said there had not been any prior HG replacement done.

  8. Replaced thermostat(s) 4 times (now have a Toyota thermostat installed).

    Replaced Radiator Cap twice.

    Replaced Radiator

    Replaced Radiator hoses.

    Flushed system twice

Removed the Fan and Fan Clutch and replaced with electric fan

Removed and reinstalled new Water Pump ( AISIN)

    New timing belt installed.

Pressure checked coolant system no leaks.

Combustible gas (blue dye) test - no gas - passed

Compression Test 170 on 5 cylinders , 155 on one cylinder

Leak down test at 100 psi - no leaks detected.

So based on all of this and the above thread - maybe we have improperly installed Head Gaskets from previous owner? So we are going to pull the heads and install new head gaskets. Any recommendations on the head gasket kit we should get?

Here is a short video of my last test drive FYI.

    https://youtu.be/QbFG2uZ_3CA

  9. Thanks for the information, I read the thread and think removal of the head gasket must be next. Maybe these blocked ports is what is happening. I Know that Toyota did not do the HG. But that does not mean that someone else did not do the HG. If the HG is installed incorrectly, that might be why it passes all the tests but still overheats. Thanks.

  10. Hi everyone following this thread. Friday the new AISIN water pump was installed. I also had the new AISIN timing belt installed. The old water pump looked pretty good when it was removed. When the mechanics inspected it closely they determined it had a small leak and that the bearings were worn? Not sure how they determined this they just used their hand to turn the pump and said they cold hear the bearings. ? ? Anyway after all was put back together we went for a test drive. Driving around town the temp gauge stayed at around 1/3 - below 1/2 Yeah! ! . This was a short drive less than 10 miles around the flat areas in town. I said I wanted to test it on a hill. There is a small incline taking a road west. So we started on this road and as the incline increased so did the temperature. Bummer :( . We turned around just before the red line and the temperature went down very quickly. Much faster then before. Mechanic is stumped. On the way home I took the freeway and noticed the same increase in temperature at over 60 mph. Cooled right down when I got off the freeway, took it for a drive up the hill by my home. This is a steep up hill drive. Heat went up as we went up the hill, came down as we came down the hill. I think there is some sort of coolant restriction. I bought a "Toyota" thermostat and plan to take the truck to a radiator shop on Monday. I want to have the system flushed and to have the new "Toyota" thermostat installed and to have the coolant replaced in a manner to insure there are no air bubbles. I will also have the coolant system pressure checked again. Had the ignition timing checked again and it is still good. However: the mechanic with his head under the hood said that he thinks there may be an exhaust leak or vacuum leak? Opinions please.

  11. When I replaced my water pump I was assured by many that the Aisin was the way to go. My Aisin pump looked like the one in your video and was an exact duplicate of the OE pump taken out of my Toy. I know this as I do not trust replacement parts and check every way possible to make sure it is the same part. If I remember correctly, where Toyota was stamped on the original was ground off on the new pump.

I had an issue with the gasket as the old pump did not have a gasket or what appeared to be sealer, there was a tiny bit of black material on the block and old pump. I was told to use the gasket and that tiny bit of black on the gasket is the sealer.

I am not a mechanic and was told the torque values are critical putting the new one in, so I followed directions.

Also the outlet is plastic and will crack if over tightened.

    c) Install the water outlet with the two bolts.

    Torque: 19 N–m (195 kgf–cm, 14 ft–lbf)

Thank you I will pass this info on to my mechanic.

  12. Sherrie,

    1. Fan issues will not cause overheating at hwy speeds, there is enough movement of air to keep it cool

    2. Your cooling system either has a restriction or is getting air or your water pump is not working correctly.

    3. Pls take a peek at the overflow tank and post a pic of it if possible, kinda gives Hx of the gunk that was in the system.

    4. Are you losing coolant? white smoke in tail pipe?

Hi . FYI - no Gunk in the overflow, I will picture it tomorrow. Not loosing coolant, no leaks. No white smoke. Installing new water pump tomorrow - so excited hope its the end of my over heating problems.

  13. Sherrie

Great u did the coolant analysis, I am guessing it passed and it did not show any combustible gases i.e. head gasket issues?

Pls tell us again the symptoms of the over heating

    1. Does it overheat while you a moving at high speed?

    2. Does it overheat after you slow down or come to a stop?

Injecting coolant under pressure: how they can say that air will NOT be introduced is questionable.

I had a 90 v6 camry, it had a radiator leak around the neck, it had sludge in the engine, the radiator was half empty, I drove it from Kansas city to Michigan and added water to overflow tank when I did not get heat on I-80, the air temp was 73 F when I started and was low 50s when I go to MI.

can you pls post a pic of your overflow tank (inside)

Hi, Thank you for taking time to review my overheating issue. I did test for head gasket leaks in 3 ways. (1) Combustible Gas in Radiator. No dye color change, no indication of Head Gasket Leak. (2) Compression Test- 170 PSI on 5 cylinders, 155 on one cylinder. (3) Leak Down Test (twice) - No detectable problems. I do not believe it is the Head Gasket. Basically the truck overheats when it is being driven. Does not overheat when not moving. I had it sit in the driveway for an hour and it did not overheat. That does not mean it might not overheat the next time. As you drive the temperature increases. Takes around 15 minutes to get hot! If you go up hill it overheats faster. Once it has gotten hot it will get hot again even faster. IE You drive on the Flat Highway for 15 minutes and it gets hot. You pull over - pour water on the Radiator - cool things down - wait 30 minutes until the gauge is less then 1/2 and then take off again and it will overheat in 10 minutes. etc. It overheats at 60 MPH and at 15 MPH and once it starts it continues until you turn the engine off. So if it is overheating and you stop at a light it continues to keep rising in temp. I will take a pick of the overflow tank tomorrow when I take it to the mechanics. Thanks Again
