  1. Took longer than expected to finish, smog and register the Dora, but she's finally out and we're on our first maiden voyage-up in Eugene for the week, meandering back via coastline, and heading back to Ashland, Or again in two weeks for a four day Herbal Symposium/seaweed harvest.

Updates, include, new carpet, chairs, uphostery, paint, led lights, new cab-over, ceiling, and a few other rot repairs. New mirrors coming in the mail, as well as a soar system. Still planning to paint exterior myself, probably artwork of some sort and a wheelcover that has something calming zen phrase to help those poor irritated folks in a hurry!

  2. Hey thank you, Karin. I really appreciate the invite and will definately take you up on that. I hope to explore as much as the Pacific Northwest as possible and Seattle is on that list. Hoping to utilize the Odyssey to check out a few of my favorite things to do in the Cities I want to see as well... things like Farmers Markets, Food Co-ops, Botanical Gardens/Specialty Garden Centers and Specialty Yarn Shops, any kind of festivals/workshops to attend.

Although our 3.5 mile access road to our 14 acres is pretty rough most of the time, it is quiet out here, and there are a few fairly level spots to park you too are welcome if the need arises. Not much around here to do or see though...;)

Thanks again for your kind offer..

  3. well that sure didn't work out very well! Corrections

sorry about this mess-please forgive the newbie!

  4. Can someone help me to understand what's going on here with the wiring? The pics are from over the cab running lights....

  5. Yeah, we talk to a lot of folks at the Farmer's Market, that come to Redding from the Bay Area to escape the fog and enjoy the heat. A lot of house boats on Lake Shasta too. I on the other hand will be heading up to Mt. Shasta, which has two free campgrounds and to the Oregon/Washington Coast to escape that heat this Summer. Hubs loves the heat so he's good.....

  6. Boondocking at a fellow RV-er's home would be very nice, I'd think, compared to a parking lot...I've used Walmart before though, pulling my little '67 Pathfinder, travel trailer. Didn't sleep but a wink or two due to the noise and it was kinda creepy. I don't like truckstops either. I like people and in my experience, I find most folks to be kind and decent, and I would think that staying in a fellow rv-er's driveway would be very nice. Socializing is the best reason to be on the road (for me, anyway).

We live 3.5 miles off the main road -nearest neighbor a mile away, nearest town and the I-5 is 10 miles away-(population 3300).

Like Dolphinite, our poor road situation would deter most motorhomers, but the offer is there nontheless...Like jdemaris, coyotes and owls are all you would hear at nite.

  7. I had a pet porky for two years. Real cute at first. Name it "Prick." He(or she?) used to climb on top of my head every morning while I was having breakfast. When it got big it got a bit onery. Would try to climb up my back and I'd go to push it off and UP went the quills. It was getting so I was plucking quills out of myself every day. You can pet a porcupine just like a cat as long as you don't go "against the grain" and the porky is in a good mood. When ticked off and the quills stick out - you can't touch it without getting speared.

Me and porky finally had a show-down after it hopped into bed one night. I tried to move it and I got quills in my cheek - kind of like a hound dog. I took him up to the woods and let it go. Up a tree it went. We DO have plenty of fisher around. Don't know if the porky wound up being food for one or not.

omgosh that is a super sweet story!

  8. Oh, I'd dealt with them before but this particular time there were 3 dogs and just so many that I went to the vet. Perhaps I'd have done it myself if I knew what it would cost!

that was cheap, trust me..lucky it wasn't after hours or on sunday! Last time we had to pull quills it was out of a mama peahen. She was on a nest up on a hill and we heard her raise a ruccus defending her nest. Ended up having to push him down the hill with a shovel. He did end up with the eggs though...fortunately there were only a few quills in her breast-poor girl!

  9. YAY! It works!! :) Now then....hoping the thermostat is the ONLY reason there is no heat in the cab and that she'll smog~then everything will be in working order as far as I can see.

  10. jdmaris, Thank you for being so kind, what a wonderful experience to share with your little one, great pics!

Sure they can be a pain for the pooches, and those pesky groundhogs can do some serious damage to your garage/shed/smokehouse, ect.~ but they too deserve the kindness you are shown. Thanks for sharing!

We too had to relocate critters on a regular basis...mostly raccoons and rats. The trick is to take them far enough away...

~oh and Derek...If the puppers get into porky again-Cut the ends off the quills with a real sharp pair of scissor~they come out much easier....:)

  11. Interesting article Jdemaris...I've seen these kind of evaporative coolers. They can actually be made very cheaply (about $35) from an ice chest filled with ice or dry ice, and a simple set of duel fans. Plugs into a cigarette lighter. I actually prefer an evap system or swamp cooler to AC... which is how we )cool our yurt down in this Northern Cali heat. Works best in dry heat though, (which is the only kind of heat that i want to be in anyway! I don't plan on using it much if at all on the road where I'll be hanging out. a simple fan to drown out truckers occasionally perhaps, but I'll be thankful to know my system and how it all works.

Bob-that's what I needed to know. With something that big, I assumed it might need it's own power.

The sun is out nice and bright today so I'll have full batteries by noon so I'll know more this afternoon.

  12. no no, i just meant that I had it plugged into our house electric, which is generated by solar, but not sure how full those batteries were at that time and if that made a dif. I'll try a direct connect with the generator next and see what that does.. :)
