  1. UPDATE:

On today's news, there are many articles regarding the FBI beginning to crack down on those scam artists who are placing fake ads on eBay, and elsewhere, trying to trick people into buying cars that don't exist.

Here are some key words to Google up, should to wish to read more about online car selling hoaxes, scams and the FBI crackdown.

    KEY WORDS TO GOOGLE:

    "Selling fake cars online"

    Or

"Nicolae Popescu" (He is on the FBI's wanted list)

  2. Okay - so I have gone through some of the posts on the page about people wanting to haul their motorcycles on the back of their toyhome...

I don't mean to bring this back up - BUT, does anyone know exactly how much weight can be placed on one of these things?

I am REALLY hoping to put Honda Trail 90 on the back of my 1989 Odyssey. This motorcycle is amazingly small and weighs in at about 170 some lbs... that coupled with a 50 lb hitch rack, would put me at about 220 lbs. Is this still over the limit?

I know that a trailer would be the safest option, but I am not into having one of those dragging behind me as I plan on living in it full time for a good 6/7 months as I do a whole country loop.

It is to tempting to just throw a hitch rack on the back and 'test' it. Is this a bad idea?

What is the best way to reinforce the hitch? Has anyone drawn up plans/done this before and would be willing to shed some light on my problem?

    Thanks!

Woops! I really meant to quote this post. Read my reply comment above.

  3. I've easily got 200 extra lbs. on my back bumper on my 21' 1988 Toyota Minicruiser. I also added near an extra 100 lbs. in steel to reinforce the back and add a receiver hitch. I can see where it can hurt a thing as long as the RV still handles well and isn't dragging the ground. Neat little bike. I still have a Honda CT70 and a CL175 .

I may be totally incorrect about my following thoughts, because I don't know Odyssey's at all. But, if your Odyssey rear bumper is anything like my '88 Dolphin rear bumper/poop tube holder, I wouldn't mount anything larger than a bicycle mount. My rear bumper is nothing more than a thin gage steel square tube to store the poop tube and secured on by only a couple of small welds. Maybe your Odyssey was built much more sturdier than mine. If you're not sure, you may wish to drive it into your nearest trailer hitch welding shop and ask their opinion/quote.

Back in the 60's, my Dad purchased our '67 CT-90 brand new for $399. We hauled it around on every camping trip on our Aloha camp trailer (solid rear bumper) using the same motorcycle tire mounts that is in your photo. Those were some of the best camping memories, from way back in my childhood!

  4. Thanks guys for all the cool info on the Citroen. I've never been too thrilled about them. But, after seeing that video (Derek provided), it was great to see that prototype 'one eyed' little monster! It kind of reminded me of the very basic and simple KDF Wagons (VW) of the late 30's. Hitler's 'Peoples Car' also had canvas seats, a dipstick to measure petrol and (if I remember correctly) a hand crank type of wind swipes. Yep, the Citroen People's Car was basic yet, a cool car for the masses.

  5. I worked next to a place that sold odd-ball British cars late 60s, early 70s. They had a 289 Cobra there. I never saw a 427 version. Also Tigers. Also TVRs with 289 Ford V8s.

I've ready many stories on the cars on Get Smart. Many souces claim there were two Sunbeams. A Tiger and an Alpine. I also believe the story about "Max Smart's" daughters wrecking the Tiger, twice. Tigers were real easy cars to wreck. I ruined four of them.

For what it's worth, Max drove three cars through out the series -but there were a few exceptions.

citoen.jpg His main machine was a red Sunbeam Tiger convertible. For the sake of trivia, Don Adams owned this car -it was part of his payment. He later gave it to one of his daughters and she wrecked it. He then spent all kinds of money fixing it and gave it to another daughter, who also wrecked it. Ouch.

The second Smart car was a blue Kharman Ghia -which comes out of the Volkswagen line. It was featured in the opening shots, but not in the episodes. Apparently showcasing the Ghia was tied in with Volkswagen's advertising. Ghias were always my dream car -despite the fact that all I can afford is a 10-year-old Cavalier.

The third car was the gold Opel GT which was used only during the last season. This particular Opel was resurrected as junker in the movie Stripes. The Opel is yet another product of crass consumerism as it was featured as a part of advertising for the show.

There were a few occasions where Max used a different car during the episodes. A Sunbeam Alpine was often substituted for the Tiger because was easier to mount Max's spy do-dads under its hood. A Citroen was used in "With Love and Twitches." Max also drove the Chief's car -a Ford Mustang. shelby.jpgIn the pilot episode, the opening scene showed Max driving a Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet.

Another mustang -Z The Zebra Car- was used in "Our Man in Leotards." According to Smartian Sue, the car was created by George Barris, who's resume includes creating the Munster cars and the Batmoble. The Zebra Car has seen a lot of mileage, appearing in" Marriage on the Rocks" with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.

    JDE,

Boy, that sure take me back a few years. I do now remember seeing some of those other cars of Max's (with the thumbnail you posted). I don't recall ever seeing a Citroen on the show. They must have been driven by those bad K.A.O.S. Agents.

  6. Yes, I was a member of CAT when our newsletter said Chrysler was considering putting a 273 into it. Good Lord ! Carol Shelby would of been rolling in his grave (had he been dead then). "CAT" was California Association of Tigers." I was living in New Jersey but at the time, it was the only Tiger club in the USA. The Tiger already had some pretty serious design problems with the 260 shoe-horned in there. Shelby put in rack-and-pinion steering to make room for it and lost ALL the Ackerman Angle in the steering. So a Tiger even going slow burnt up tires and squealed whenever making a turn. To those who don't know what the Ackerman Angle is - it's the ability of the front wheels to wander away from each other and NOT stay parallel when turning. E.g. when you make a left turn, the left wheel goes on a smaller turning circle then the right wheel. So the left wheel has to "toe out" when turning, and "toe in" and get parallel with the other when going straight. Any production car or truck does that. NOT the Tiger. My first Tiger had a 260. My second a 289. My third had a modified 351 jammed into it and the floor got so hot my feet would burn.

Ralph Smart was driving a Tiger in the beginning of "Get Smart." From what I've read, Chrysler had it changed - so in a away, hey ruined the show too. At least for me. I found the show to be "stoopid" but I liked seeing him drive the Tiger and also liked Agent 99. She was cute. But so was Honey West with her "other Shelby." The AC Cobra.

    JDE,

Correction: I think that you meant, 'Maxwell Smart' (aka Agent 86). Ya, I can be a wise guy sometimes. And, I do remember the Tiger he drove before he changed to a VW Karman Ghia.

You've been posting some real cool stuff lately...good job!

    ~Riverman77

  7. I wish I knew and was wondering the same thing. I'm not sure if each change was "stand-alone" and then engine went back to full stock before the next mod, or they were just one added to another.

Back in the days of V8s being more common - I put headers on many a vehicle. With all I felt some sort of lower RPM power increase but can't say I ever felt I gained anything in regard to fuel mileage. I kind of hate headers now. They rust out, blow gaskets, throw off way too much heat, etc.

Also - many of the American engines often had very restrictive cast-iron exhaust manifolds so there seems to be a lot of room for improvement. On the other hand, many of the Japanese engines have factory exhaust manifolds that appear to be much less restrictive. Seems there is even less gain to be had.

Even as late at the 80s, many companies were pushing parts to make RVs more fuel efficient. Crane had a special RV cam, Edelbrock had special carb and intake manifold RV specials. Same with headers. I installed many, for myself and for others. Can't say I ever saw a huge improvement in any of the installs.

    JDE,

Your recent timing of posting all these various posts about 'external tranny coolers, headers and RV cams', has been very helpful to me. It just so happens that I have been pondering making all three of these upgrades on my 88 Dolphin 2.4 EFI w/43aod trans. I guess why mess up a good thing that already runs perfectly! Thanks for your performance loss postings. I'm going to leave good and well enough alone and go hit the road soon!

  8. Not hating, just think the awesomest interior title actually belongs to another Sunrader project.

    https://www.vanspecialties.com/gallery_van/yota-4x4/

    Corbin,

No hating here either. I just viewed your link to the 4x4 rig. On photos #34 & #35, I noticed a very stout spare tire mount. Also, do you think that those are a couple of coach batteries paired together, under there enduring the wet elements? It also looks like the exhaust pipe runs right along side the carriage mounted propane tank. I'm not sure if I like hot pipes next to propane and exposed coach batteries. Otherwise, a real cool shorty 4x4!

  9. $350 for a custom made curved window made from two-ply safety glass? That's sounds like a bargain if true. I checked around awhile back about getting a curved windshield made for a boat that was just single-ply Lexan (or some sort of Plexi-glass). The price estimate on just that was over $200. I finally made my own and found out how difficult it is to put curves in thick Plexi-glass.

I'd still like to find a source for a new windshield for a 1978 Toyota truck. I've stripped three so far - and even though the glass was not cracked - the internal plastic "safety" layer is faded in all. I'd like to get a clear windshield somewhere (with no cracks).

    JDE,

There is a real cool site that you may wish to visit. Google up: Ultra Van Tin Can Tourists. Lots of info, history, clubs & more......

    ~Riverman77

  10. Thanks for all the info. I'm driving over to look at this week if we get a nice snowless day.

    JDE,

Boy, that Ultra is one bizarre and ugly looking Mutha! In this case, I like bizarre. The whopper-chopper toilet system, is like nothing I've ever seen. Just don't go and fertilize someone's garden with it, just because you are able to. As far as the air cooled engine goes, that is nothing to be concerned about. It seems as if the Corvair Spider engine delivered somewhere near 100HP (I

Thanks for all the info. I'm driving over to look at this week if we get a nice snowless day.

forgot the specifics). If you rebuild any air cooled engine correctly (VW's also), they will run just fine. Ralph Nader was a bonehead out to cause much unnecessary trouble. I'd say go for it and purchase that ugly Mutha!

  11. I'm probably going to eliminate the front windows and maybe the sides too for the sake of simplicity. The cab is fine. The side walls are slightly askew but not too bad. Thinking about reframing with steel studs. Will document the progress. It is insured and it was totalled and will be buying it back. (250.00$) The mod to the bed is a fold-down extension. 1/2" plywood reinforced with ripped 2x4's and piano-hinged to either side of the front walls. I added 16" to the width of the bed. Also made some swing-out brackets to support it when down. The top side has the reinforcing so I then glued in some appropriate thickness egg-crate foam. It stays in the up position with some gate type latch bolts that fit into holes drilled into the steel wall framing. Another pad covers the whole bed so you don't really notice a gap. Makes a big difference and we sleep better with the extra room. I used red oak plywood for looks. gj

    Greg,

You said (4 years ago) that your insurance company had totaled your Itasca and you then bought it back from them for $250. Now that you have restored it to better and stronger than it was, will your insurance company have any trouble insuring it again? Will you forever have a blemish on your title saying the word "insurance totaled vehicle"? I'm simply curious. I've often wondered what my own insurance company would do, if I had a serious claim. We are kind of a specialized group of people that drive around 30 year old RV's.

    ~Riverman77

  12. I tend to over-build everything. Adding steel frames and solid plywood for the floor really upped the weight. Front axle at the limit, rear a little on the heavy side as far as GVWR.

Nice job! I'm glad to see that you got rid of the windows. How many inches did you 'extend' your new cabover, forward? It looks to me that you re-designed about 6" more forward?

    ~Riverman77

  13. I can't figure out what he's looking at that makes him think it's a Dolphin. Overhead section is shaped differently, no Dolphin logos that I can see and yes different tail lights.

    Linda S

Agreed. Those small taillights look like a rig from the early '80's. And the super huge window, I have never seen before. You thought it could be a custom window. Why would anyone (in their right mind) build a big window like that? Really into star gazing or something? They're just asking for a bird to come smash the window, while driving down the highway.

    ~Riverman77

  14. I am pleased that you found the 'real' problem of foul smells and are now underway with making the repairs.

Just imagine if you had pulled out the toilet and holding tanks (as originally planned), only to discover this small leak?

Thanks for updating us...I love hearing follow up success stories!

    ~Riverman77

  15. I think this forum is just crackers! That's why its so easy give a rozzer the dropsy in snide.

Anyway, I have to go framble the portisan while its still cool and barkney...

    John

    John,

It's been a long time since I've been to Europe. Perhaps you wouldn't mind translating the Scottish or British into regular American English for us.

    ~Riverman77

  16. I would also agree, not recommended. When ever I see folks pulling or hauling stuff behind their ToyHomes, I think that they are asking for trouble (IMHO). A friend of mine 'occasionally' pulls a very small utility trailer behind his '90 Itasca (with a V6). He knows and runs the risks and asks me to keep my cel phone on, in case I need to come help him on the side of the road.

    ~Riverman77

  17. You're right. It was there yesterday but seems to be AWOL this morning. But the clickable link is still there. You just need to be a bit psychic to find it!

    Derek,

I have found a couple of ways to send out a PM (if I ever needed to). But, I have not yet found my 'incoming' PM mailbox icon.

Do you or Linda have any idea if Greg has permanently removed the (easy to find) PM icon?

    ~Riverman77

  18. Looking at the forum page only reveals the last comment made in any particular section. It does not reveal the other comments that might have been made by a number of individuals on a number of different topics within a forum section. So for me the new content feature is relevant and important to how I use this website.

    Corbin,

Ah, now I get what you are saying. I think I have tried using that once before. For me, it got me thinking in too many directions at once. Thanks for the clarification.

Have you noticed the dialog box (when typing a reply) looking more antiquated these days (since Greg's fixing)?

    ~Riverman77

  19. The seller seems to have put the description from the wrong ad into the one for the Dolphin. Still looks like it might be in nice shape and a good buy. Matching 6 lug wheels front to back.

    http://nmi.craigslist.org/rvs/4816628266.html

Derek is correct. Those are the same photos of the RV being scammed all over on Craig's List. I just now clicked on your Craig's List link and it has already been flagged & removed.

    ~Riverman77

  20. Riverman77 my apologies for sucking your statement into an issue you didn't intent. Bureaucracy grows and seldom makes things easier for people.

    yours,

    Rad Wolfe

    Rad wolfe,

I much agree with the second part of your comment. As "bureaucracy" grows, on both sides of the border (call it the S word or not), individual freedoms diminish and life gets more complicated. Apologies accepted in return.

P.S. It sounds like the original poster of the comment got his answer from us and is possibly having the Canadian come down to Phoenix, for the RV purchase. I hope that the transaction works smoothly for both party's.
