start with chasing down an owners manual for the heater, i think most are on this site. just remember you are dealing with an explosive gas. the good part is they are very basic and simple, not a lot to go wrong.

I think most of these if not all were gas, not electric. You are probably noticing the fan come on when you adjust it. Please check out a manual or have a pro give your furnace a once over, not too much to go wrong there but if this is a new rig for you it needs to be checked out properly for leaks and operation.
