  1. Finally selling our home but still not determined where to "retire" to (tho, know it will be far away from I-95!), so looks like we will be living in the Toy for a while as we search. This could be fun. We hope! However, we're new to this and have a couple of questions.

How much weight should we allow for our 'stuff'? (to the basics there's been an extension and carrier box added on the back, and an awning added.

Not being a mechanic, but capable of small things, what minimum tools should one take?

And other than mechanical tools, what are some items you would not be without in your motorhome?

    Many thanks!

  2. I just had 6-YK356 yokohama 185R14 8pr put on and the best old one put on as a spare (didn't have a spare and bought a rim earlier with no tire). Total was $682.00 mounted, balanced out the door. Hankooks RA08 were offered for $488.00 but the yokohamas were recommended over the hankcooks by 4 different persons.

When you have a small motorhome riding on the tires, you want the best tire, or that was my feelings. I have read good reviews on both kinds of the tires and probably either one would be OK.

    PS.

I have the 86 Sunland Express and live in North Carolina

May I ask where you got the tires out the door for that price? I'm near enough NC to make it worth my while to go there! Thank you.

  3. Thank you, Maineah. My tank is fixed and everything looks to be okay. It's just over half full from the previous owner. Was going to try the stove today but she's parked, of necessity, in a sunny spot and it was 90 degrees with 500% :^] humidity today so didn't go in her. My manual says, when lighting the oven, to "turn on main gas supply to range". It does not say that for lighting the top burners. ???? Do you know where the main gas supply to the range is??

  4. It's been snow, rain or gray here too often since Dec, and colder than usual. Here in VA this year May is the new March, it seems. However, today even tho cool, then warm but HUMID..., my new Winnie finally passed the emissions inspection (without costing toooo much)allowing 2011 stickers to be gotten for her plates this afternoon and I can, at last, begin to think of actually using her! And now have questions about HOW to use things like stove, etc. Have noticed others talking about recertifing the LP tank. Will there be something on mine to show if it is certified or not? Much thanks. Hope the sun comes out for you!

  5. Ah, the exuberance and adaptability of youth!! Glad you kept your eyes on what can be done, and didn't get discouraged. Keep that spirit as long as you can. This old fart needs to see a good reminder of 'go for it' once in a while. Thanks for posting the pictures.

  6. When I need tires, I'm leaning seriously towards a set of Hankook RA08 185R14 All Season Radial. Others speak highly of the Yokohama Y356.

Just be sure you don't get talked into installing a set of passenger car tires. You definately want at least Load Range 'C' in a 185R14.

    Many thanks, Derek!

  7. Hi! I (finally, after looking for a couple of years) just bought my 92 Winnie (Phoenix II) last month. Was just able to bring her home this past weekend. She ran very well over Rte 50 thru WVa! Am now in the process of getting emissions inspection passed - into the shop tomorrow, don't yet know how much.... She passed the safety inspection, including the tires, but they are 10 years old and I'm going to get new. Looked at the 'tires' forum on this site, and have been looking at tire company web pages. All sites so far say, 'sorry we don't make that size tire any more'. The garage said they could put a set of Kumho on her. Has anyone bought tires in the last year or so? If so, what do you recommend?

As for the question about buying a Toyota motorhome: I looked till I found a good one and was willing to pay a bit more for her. For an older motorhome within my budget I felt the Toyota based was far and away the best gamble for the buck. Plus, I've long thought they are darned cute and just the right size. Now I just have to learn how to use everything and take care of her.
