I just acquired a '78 chinook newport. I am looking at the stock window shades, and it looks like they originally used a track along the sides of the windows to hold the shades to the sidewall. Note on this model, the walls are sloped, not straight up and down. Being 32 years old, the stock shades are still there, but look to be broken (no attachment brackets to hold them to the wall - there are still the tracks there on the wall, but no plastic bracket on the shade to hold them).

Anyone have any tips on how to either fix the existing shades, or replace them? I need shades with some blackout capability (I am in Alaska - long daylight hours during camping season. I'm trying to figure out how to make it work with the sloped sidewalls.

  2. After purchasing some from SuperBright Leds I ran across some being offered on ebay. Not as powerful but considerably less cost. I have not installed them anywhere but will soon. I also bought a led tape system. 60 leds on about 18 inches of self adhesive tape. They can be separated into 3 leds each. I did separate some and am using them for my range hood light and interior cabinet lighting. They work great. $12 foor the set of 60. I have used 20 of the 60 so far and I ordered one more strip to add to other compartments. I use mini micro lever switches so that when we open the door it turns on the lights. Plenty of light from 12 leds! I cut the leds into sections of 3 x 4 spaced about 4 inches apart.

Greg, I am curious to know which ones you bought off ebay. I would like to install Led's in my overhead lights but I am not willing to pay Superbright's prices (yet). Thanks -

  3. I am wondering what all the 4x4 owners have for wheels on there rigs?

I have an 86 Odyssey 4x4 and am doing an axle swap to a full floater. The axle came with 4 14" rims, but of course I am currently running 15" rims. I am trying to decide weather I should purchase 4 new 15" wheels for the back or if I should get 14" wheels for the front.

I just eye balled the front and it looks like a 14" wheel would clear the brakes and rotor but can anyone confirm?

Another thing I am thinking about is that the tire options seem much greater in the 15" range.

What are all the other 4x4's using out there? Pro's Cons?

    Sean

    Sean,

There are two companies one is Stocktonwheel.com as Greg quoted and the other is customcommercialwheel.com which Linda quoted. I bought mine from Custom Commercial since they were a tad bit cheaper. I can't find the invoice to quote you on what I paid for them but I believe it was around $800.00 +- delivered.

Bobby, from Stockton Wheel is a real nice guy and he quoted me $195.00 a wheel + freight and 3 weeks lead time to produce a set.

I had Custom make me 15X6 w/6X7.25 b.c. standard offset. (which both Stockton & Custom suggested).

Now, I was running 235's on my front and was told that I could run those as well for the rear. NOT! It turned out there was not enough clearance between the tires, they rubbed together. So, I went with 215/75R15 all the way around, which are perfect. I went with Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S G051 C rating - from Tire Rack.

Since I already had the axle upgrade I just went with 15's to match the original 15" front rims. I hope this helps.

  4. You left out some important things. It's the only king cab Sunrader ever built. The only 4x4 with custom made 15 inch wheels and has been featured on every 4x4 and expedition vehicle site online. It's worth what someone will pay and times are tough right now. I think you'd get the best price on ebay. Just set the reserve so you don't regret anything when it's done.

Ahhh....it is NOT the only 4X4 with custom made 15" wheels anymore.....rolleyes.gif

  5. Hello

I have a '90 Odyssey with a overhead mattress with the cutout which needs to be replaced. Where can I find a new mattress or can the existing one be refitted with new stuffing? Any help would be appreciated

You may want to try your furniture or boat upholsterers in your area. They should definitley be able to help you. Here are a couple sites that I came across. Let me know how you made out.

  6. Hi Everyone, Here is something that is really stumping me. I have an 85' 4X4 Sunrader that has 15" Rims. The existing wheel covers are in poor condition and I would like to replace them. I have looked high & low and I am beginning to think that these are not Toyota wheel covers. Does anyone know what other years may fit my wheel or has anyone tried their hand at painting wheel covers? Thanks in advance. Roxannepost-2648-1248222954_thumb.jpg

  7. I'm just curious what it would cost...ball parking...to re-upholster a 1984 Toyota Dolphin, it has 2 beds and a couch. And I'd probably want to replace the foam as well. Drapes can be sewn easily, so not such an issue. But how much fabric would the sofa and beds require? And where is the best place to buy the foam? and is there a better type of foam, etc.?

The thing is there is a home I can snag for a great price but it really looks threadbare; not to mention like Mrs. Brady decorated it.

    Thanks...Cal :help:

Cal, I just replaced all of the foam for my Sunrader's rear dinette cushions at a cost of only $103.00 shipping included from www.ritchiefoam.com . I have dealt with him numerous times & he will work with you on whatever you have. He has unbeatable prices. If your wife or anyone you know can sew half way decent it is not as hard as it seems. Just be sure to save all the original cushion material for patterns. I am a semi-retired upholsterer & yes there is alot of sewing involved but the cost that one can save by doing it themselves is unbelievable. It's amazing what one can do when you set your mind to it. Regards - Roxanne

  8. It's me again with another stupid question. I ordered the 15" rims from Custom Commercial Wheel. They said that I could run 215's, 225's or 235 75 R15's. I thought I had 225's on my front but it turns out I am running 235 75 R15. The dual rim size being made is 15x6 w/6x7.25 b.c. standard bolt pattern. My question is: Can I run 235's on the duals to match the front or is that too wide of a tire. If so, would 215's be okay for the rear with keeping the 235's up front? Thanks once again. - Roxanne

  9. Most likely it is the 4.10 ratio, that's pretty much the stock set. And you are correct you do have the V6 differential, all the 1 ton axles are the V6 type. You can take the third member from the rear axle of any V6 pickup and it will bolt right in. I would definitely give www.stocktonwheel.com a call and inquire about other vehicles that may just bolt up to the toyota axle. Could be considerable less than a new set.

I phoned both Stockton Wheel & Custom Commercial Wheel. It turns out that Custom Commercial Wheel is the supplier for Stockton Wheel. Custom quoted me a much lower price than Stockton so I placed the order with them for 15x6 w/ 6x7.25 b.c. standard offset. Could not get an answer on what other vehicles may just bolt up to the toyota axle. I am kinda tired of all this research so I just went ahead and ordered the brand new spankin' rims to be done with it. Amen. Thank you everyone for your help & advice. I will take pictures when I get these new sneakers on.

  10. I have found this website to be helpful in determining the ratio assuming this applies to duallys as well.

    http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

From the pictures, it appears to me that I have the V6/Turbo rear diff. I will try turning the wheel to see what revolutions I come up with. Unfortunatley I have to wait a couple weeks since the Toy is in Florida right now & I am in NC. I will keep you posted on what I come up with.

Below are some pictures of what I have. (I hope they come through).

  11. I think that's a question for a tire shop. I doubt you will be able to find the same diameter with the same load range that you need. Don't be misled in thinking its just an 18 footer and its lighter. Our 4x4 sunrader weighed in at 6800 pounds + fully loaded for a 10 day trip. Besides the fact that you can not use 4x4 with mismatched tire diameters I would make sure the rear and front gear ratios are the same. Your rear axle obviously was installed as a retrofit and may have a different ratio than your front gears. I am pretty sure I know which 4x4 you bought and the seller if it is the same had inquired about the cost of 15 inch rims from www.stocktonwheel.com and hopefully he brought that info forward to you.

Right now your speedometer is probably reading faster than you are actually going. The bad result of that is after a few years your odometer will show more miles than you have actually traveled, could be a resell factor in the future.

Someone told me that there is a possibility that Dodge 15inch 6 lug duallys will bolt up. Stockton wheel I believe wanted almost $200 each for the rims. That did not include shipping.

Thanks Greg - I know I have the 4.10 in the front & this may be a very stupid question but how do I know what I have for the rear. Is there a placard somewhere? And if it indeed does have different ratio's what are my options?

  12. Hello everyone, I just purchased an 85' 4X4 Sunrader 18ft. & it has the 14" Rims in the rear (6 lug /1 ton full floating) & 15's in the front. I know it should have the 15" rims all around if I were to use 4WD. I know I will not be using the 4WD because I wouldn't want to take it off road nor drive it in the snow, etc. So you ask why did I get the 4X4...because of the looks. My question to you all is: Without incurring the extra cost of buying 15" rims....what is the tallest tire size I can put on the 14's that would almost match the size of the front. Would this be okay to do? I need new tires for the rear since they are becoming cracked from age. If I can get away with a taller tire SAFELY I would much rather go that route. If not, I will bite the bullet & get 15" rims. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Regards, Roxanne
