  1. Hello,

Has anyone ever taken out their stove in their Chinook?

What I want to do is set up the interior of my Chinook like the 75 Chinook rather than the 78 Chinook. If you've seen a 75 Chinook, you know that the bed is on one side and all the appliances are on the other. The 78 Chinook is set up so that the bed is kind of scrunched in there and the appliances are on both sides of the Chinook. This is not an ideal set up for me because I can't fully lay down in the bed and I need to lay diagonal across the bed and my feet touch the end of the Chinook (which is annoying and I don't get a good night sleep).

So what I want to do is, I want to move the stove from one side of my Chinook to the other side. This, of course, requires re-piping the propane pipes to the other side of the Chinook. I'm sure no one is crazy enough to have done this before (because I imagine that it's a huge, painful effort), but I thought I'd ask anyways.

Also, has anyone out there ever installed pipe for a propane tank? This is something I have 0 experience with, but I'm willing to give it a try! I guess I should probably also worry about the safety aspects of installing the propane piping. I wonder if there is any safety concerns as far as getting into an accident if you change the current set up. Then, again, who knows if they actually took that into consideration in the 70s when they originally made the vehicle.

    Thanks,

    George

  2. Hi Charlie,

What do you mean by the "tent"?

I am having a problem where water is leaking into my closet somehow. I don't know if your chinook has this like foamy white material covering the walls of your closet and toilet area, but mine does. I think the water might leak from behind that white material somehow. Maybe through one of the rear lights or something? And then it seems like there's a drainage hole in the bottom of my closet that /purposely/ was created to let water out.

Naturally, I want to plug up wherever the water is coming in from because I just installed new carpets and I don't want them to get mildewy.

Do you have this problem where your closet leaks? I might be the only one, I don't know.

    Thanks!

    George

  3. Oh sweet man. Ya, I just picked one up at JC Whitney. It fit perfect! No fuss, no muss.

One discovery I did make was that the metal piece that you stick that gas nozzle into has a teeny tiny pin hole in it. Not totally sure what for, but I was going to weld it over for safety reasons. Then I was talking to this guy at my work and he said it's probably there to release excess gas. So I left it alone.

  4. Hello,

Does your closet leak in your Toyota Chinook?

I am having this problem. It's the closet /without/ the toilet.

For some reason, it seems as though when you're driving around and it's raining somehow water gets in through the closet area and soaks my (sniff sniff :-( ) brand new rugs.

I was looking at the closet a bit further and I noticed that there's a hole in the back corner. I tried plugging this up with cocking, then drove in the rain, but the water seemed to just pool up in the closet. So that got me to thinking that perhaps the hole is there as a drain??? Could that be?

If the hole is there as a drain, then perhaps the closet is supposed to leak. haha.

That's some pretty shoddy craftsmanship, if that's the case. What do other chinook owners think? Do you have the same problem?

    Thanks!

    George

  5. Hi All,

Has anyone had to replace a filler hose for a 78 Toyota Chinook?

My filler hose leaks all over the place when you fill-er-up. So I have only been filling it up half way.

I would like to get a replacement, but the hose is like 8 inches around and it doesn't seem like anyone sells those. Hard to find.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Craig

  6. hello Haleth,

I wanted to mention that I have posted a bunch of toilet pics on the gallery section. :)

If the nuts on your either side of your toilet are not rusted, this is an extremely easy job. If they are rusted, it is an extremely difficult job. Best solution I found (after sawing, grinding, and burning toilet) is a saws all. That will cut the rusted bolt right off. Highly recommend it.

SO, if you're trying to do this job, you'll notice a little plastic tab in front of your toilet. Promptly ignore that tab, as this is not where you take out your toilet from. Feel around the left and right side of the toilet. There are two indentations in both left and right sides of the toilet. Feel at the bottom of the indentations and you'll notice that there are two screws at the bottom of the indentations. These screws hold your toilet on. They are quite easy to take off if they are not rusted. (pics of screws are in image gallery).

Once you get those two screws out you need to unscrew hose going into toilet. Then you can freely disengage toilet.

One point! Do not turn on water pump for sink as this water pump also pumps water to the toilet. So you will have a soggy bathroom if you do.

    Thanks!! and happy toileting!

  7. Hello,

Has anyone removed a toilet in a toyota chinook before?

I want to remove mine permantenly so that I can use the space as a closet. I think all I need to do is unscrew the two screws holding it down in the front (there's this little plastic flap thing in the front that you can take out.)

The thing I'm concerned about is, once I remove the toilet, is there an open hole in the camper going right down to that stinky black water reservoir? Is there a way to cover it up some how if there is?

I'm wondering if maybe once I take the toilet out if there's a latch that seals off the stinkiness. :)

    Thanks for your help!!

  8. Hello,

I just purchased a 1978 Toyota Chinook. I was wondering if anyone happened to know if there's some place online where I might be able to find the owner's manual for this.

Maybe PDF format or something like that. I tried a quick Google search, to no avail. Rats! :)

    Thanks!
