If you haven't already seen this unfortunate event I will link that as well.

Hey Joe, not trying to jump down your throat here - and it's been about a month since I watched that video - but wasn't the issue that the shop screwed up putting the wheel on? And that was their last straw so they moved on... The failure was human error not due to single wheels.

I'm interested in this because I'd like to eventually have a 18ft Sunrader with a replaced rear axle that isn't dually. Cheers!

    Morning guys...

In anticipation of my 1990 Odyssey, I've been piecing my ideas together.  Question please.  What is the best way to get a surfboard up on the rig.  Not seeing a whole lot on the way of roof racks.  I know I could fashion something inside, but would prefer to put on the roof.  Any advice would be awesome and appreciated.

Ask the instagram handle @home.on.wheels - they're super nice.

  3. Hey everybody, I feel like chump for posting because I’m headed home. A little wiser for the wear but mostly bummed and sorry to waste your time 😅

When I went to see the rig, someone met me at the driveway and basically gave me the run down on the guy who was selling and said he was pretty shady. That, coupled with the amount of rust amongst other things- I decided to pass.

Ashland Oregon is really beautiful though!

What's the asking price of the truck?  How much are you wiling to put into it?  Will you be doing the work or paying a shop/ mechanic?

Asking price is $5,500 - willing to put in another $2k - at this point either a mechanic will have to get it ready for me to drive it south or I’ll drive it and fix it up at home.

just found out the mechanic who did the inspection didn’t even put it on a lift and they’re more of a fleet service shop not a Toyota shop. I chose poorly.

  5. Have yet to see the rig in person.

I’m going to be searching for a donor vehicle nearby - fingers crossed but hopes not up - and wondering if this sort of dreary day will actually clear up! The shop did say that it has good beams so if we could find a couple replacement axles etc then we’d be in business!

A few Craigslist ads I found:

Possible rear axle assemblys I could use- https://medford.craigslist.org/pts/d/cave-junction-1996-dodge-ram-2500-full/6834963235.html

  6. I drove up to Oregon after work last night to see about buying a 21ft 1984 Sunrader. Admittedly, I’ve made a couple mistakes at this point (namely driving up here Before receiving the findings of a pre-purchase inspection I had the current owner of the vehicle go and get- on my dime) but now here I am in town and looking at my options. I’m going to post photos from the pre-purchase inspection below and open up the floor to anyone who’d like to hem, haw, scoff, or give advice!

I stopped in and spoke with the shop who did the inspection and, while they are very very nice, they did discourage me towards actually moving forward on this vehicle. They said they’d whip up a quote on how much / what it would take to get this rig roadworthy enough to drive on down 588 miles south, driving up a steep grade to the height of 3,000ft at one point.

Any axle will work as long as it and the tires can hold the weight. I went for the 14 bolt as I had access to one. You don’t need a ff for singles. The more heavy duty, the better. The 14 bolt works well as it has the same rear ratio as the Toyota. Plus I wanted one with drum brakes in the back rather than disc. This way your not fudging brake proportioning valves to make everything work. I opted for an early model axle as the brake drums are smaller and will accept a 15” wheel. Later models of the 14 bolt require 16” wheels. Do good research before buying your axle.

Hey Fred, thanks for this I appreciate it. I'm scouring this forum as well as google - but I'm definitely putting the cart before the horse as I don't have a MH yet - working on getting one tomorrow tho! Reminds me that I need to visit the bank...
Once I have a rig I can do all sorts of fun measuring and pick'n'pull hunting. If I remember right, you carry a spare for the front and back - where do you store those suckers? Have you given thought to a front axle swap?

  8. 2 hours ago, fred heath said:

No worries. Remember you’ll have to have a new rear driveshaft fabricated. The 14 bolt takes a Spicer 44 u-joint. At the time no shops carried an adapter to fit my factory Toyota driveshaft.

Gotcha! Something like this would've come in handy - http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/1310-to-toyota-conversion-ujoint-u-joint-universal-joint-tdi-1310-toyuj.html

Yes. That’s the weight that’s resting on the tires. They make bigger tires that hold more weight but you’re limited by wheel well clearance. 4K is the most you can put on a 27”diameter tire. A bigger tire will not fit.

All of this info is opening up my eyes - there are a few axles that could potentially fit in the rear, then. I think I'd like to source a 10.5" Corporate 14 Bolt Differential - seems like a lot of people go that route and it can be a less expensive option as well as easier to find at pick'n'pulls. Thanks for all the good info, Fred.

Fine by me- i am learning so much!!! i am a total novice, learning everything quite literally from the ground up! I have a tire inflation kit that works great- will do that asap

Yeah, sorry again for hijacking - I am learning a ton and trying to soak it up when/where I can!
Hey, NLJW - where did you get your tire-inflation kit?

  11. Just now, fred heath said:

It’s all based on weight. Sunraders are pretty light. If your rear over axle weight is 4K or less, singles will work. Length has nothing to do with weight.

Okay, I see what you mean- and what I meant is that a longer rig could mean a heavier rig simply because of more materials used/ more space for more stuff inside of the mh.
When you refer to rear over axle weight do you mean when I have just the rear axle on a scale?

This is so funny! I just ran across this post. I am new to the forum and new to the Toyota motorhome fam. I actually purchased this exact rig just a couple days after your post was made.

Update: It runs great! Makes it up hills just fine. Needed some new oil and other fluids under the hood, nothing major. I’ve gotten the windshield replaced and epoxied the curved front plexi glass window. I am also replacing the broken side window with plexi glass. Got to do some electrical work (some lights) and install a new vent/fan on top and she will be ready for a full interior remodel :)

Hey there Sunny - good on ya for getting to SC a day before me! I'm working on getting a different rig, a little more in-line with what I actually wanted  - so no hard feelins! 😛

How's that rear axle? Also, I am super curious about where you had to go to get it!? Also, did you have to tow it?

Dang... the jealousy is setting in now! Hahaha

  13. 2 hours ago, fred heath said:

All is good. I’ll never get near 8,600#. Because I’m running singles, and the max tire diameter I can use is 27” (and still clear the wheel wells and bump stop) puts my over axle rate at about 4K max. My whole rig only weighs 4200 lbs. with me in it. So no danger of popping a tire. This is why you have to have an accurate over axle rate that falls in that 4K or less. If more than that you won’t find singles that can carry the extra weight safely.

The track with the singles is just a solid as it was with the duels. Tolls are also way cheaper. 🙂

Right on, man, that's great because your '79 is small/lighter than let's say an '84 21ft Sunrader - and so for that rig they wouldn't want to go Singles. And that is because - while the 1-ton FF axle is fine- any single wheel won't be able to hold the weight of a heavy MH.

  14. On 5/26/2018 at 11:25 PM, fred heath said:

Big thing with singles is the weight of your mh over the rear axle. As long as your under 4K lbs.(est) single D rated tires should carry the weight. Wider track will add stability but with wide singles you’re  back to extra stress on those shafts.

Hey Fred, following up on this - if you did a swap like yours, though, then the GAWR is 8,600lbs so alllll good, right?

    Take a read here...

"The GM also came standard with 4.10.1 gearing, same as the Toyota."

How important is this? Can't you do a gear swap?

My biggest takeaway from this Fred Heath post is kind of along the lines of what Atlanta was saying - that as long as the springs have a place to set, the drive shaft lines up, and the axle is FF (or can hold the weight you need) and length is what you want, then you can work out the brakes etc.
Personally, I love the idea of not running dually's and finding a perfect match like Fred did. Just working on widening the scope of what can fit.

  16. Hey Atlanta, thanks for the thorough response, I appreciate it.

That's good to know, and yeah I will check the ride height!

Can you see this link? https://imageappoh.car-part.com/image?seller=2257&partGUID=471C159D-8DAA-4ECD-96B6-7AD8B3A2B348&vehicleGUID=FEAD2647-CAB5-4049-88F5-3E252D55F463&display=1985 Toyota Truck Rear Axle Assembly-Stock%23 38-247

    - it is a 1985 Toyota Truck, 4x2 1 ton, rear axle assembly on Car-Part for $450

Seems ideal but going to be a pretty penny to haul down to California from Washington...

A Jeep Comanche is only going to give you a rear axle width of 60". A T100 has a rear width of 66.75. With wheels and tires it's going to be about the same width as the duallys. Pretty stable with no modifications needed

    Linda S

Hey Linda, do you mean no modifications needed if he transfers the whole cab over? The T100 isn't a good option for a foolie swap, is it? I'd really like to do a swap from foollie to single.

  18. Hey y’all - thought I’d just tag along in this thread because I’m curious about bags.

I’m looking at a Sunrader that’s on airbags currently. Does this most likely mean the springs are worn and I should think about replacing them? It’s got a ‘foolie’ so I’m already looking around for a rear axle- maybe I’ll start looking for a full donor truck if I need springs, too. At the right price point an old Toyota donor truck could be an ideal find.

    Update:

Found a shop that will bend custom ubolts and I have the dimensions... Shop in Jackson Mi kicked em out for 8 bucks a piece with washers and nuts. Also had spring plates fabbed for $50 with nice flared edges. Dropping $20 on shackle bushings because hey why not; they are 26 years old and shredded currently.

Decided to ditch the extra 6 lug wheels for the front and just carry a spare tire for Front 5 lug. If I run into trouble I'll call a tire shop and have them pop it if need be.

Hey Totem, I'm just real glad for you and the way you post.

Hey Linda, what do you search for when you're looking on car-part etc for a replacement rear axle? Let's say it's going on a 21ft - I think you'll need 1) full float 2) 4.10 gear ratio is ideal 3) length of axle - and from what I've gathered, where the springs rest can be modified at a good shop. What's another ideal? full assembly? Might as well find a good replacement for the driveshaft as well?
I'm hoping to purchase a 21ft '84 Sunrader this weekend and might try to source a rear axle on my drive back home!

Cheers to all this CA sunshine,

    Thanks.

It came equipped when I purchased the MH.

I did a lot of modifications to get it to look the way is does now.

Originally it had a swinging gate in front of the rear door. The spare was mounted to the gate. Only problem was getting out with the gate closed. Not enough swing room for the rear door. That and it had some funky 1970's trailer lights attached to a sheet metal wrap around panel.

Anyone else think this is the best axle swap thread on this forum? Great job, Fred... if you're around...
