You can see the two "T" handle drains in this photo. These are for draining the system for winterization. Pull the handles UP to drain the lines.
The white "T" fitting toward the upper left looks like a "T" valve. It should be the same as the "T" valve in the next photo (not sure why it was mounted with the valve handle facing the wrong way??)
Anyway, these are used to bypass water past the water heater.
When winterizing, drain the entire system, including the water heater. Run antifreeze in the system so it gets into the water heater. then turn these valves so water no longer goes through the water heater.
Personally, I don't like this approach to bypassing the water heater, as it can leak water into the water heater, it then freezes in the winter, and breaks the liner in the water heater.
IMHO - If you use the water heater - then leave it connected normally, and go through the normal winterization process (drain the water heater and run antifreeze through it)
If you don't use the water heater (I don't use mine) then do this:
1) Winterize the water heater as done normally -- i.e. make sure its drained completely, and then run some antifreeze through it.
