Ecto1
I have a 22r but I keep losing all power going up hill. I put a new head. plus a lot of other new parts any suggestions.
WME
Get use to it. A 22R will have 60-70hp at the rear wheel and its trying to move over 5500lb
Ecto1
It's not that it bottoms out and won't move.
whyverne14
How badly? Mine did that last year. Cruisin' along, come to a hill; 10 mph. It was the TPS. Throttle position sensor. It's in the throttle body. I replaced it, not hard but fiddly. Look it up.
WME
You missed the point. To move 5500lbs up a 4% grade at 65 mph will require 200 hp. Don't have 200HP?? then a full tune up to specs including valves. Weird things to check fuel pump pressure, does the carb open all the way, clean air filter . P.S. A 22R does not have a TPS Edited April 12, 2017 by WME
whyverne14
Oh, 22re does. I live on a hill.
Maineah
If it's an 87 it is a 22RE. How steep is this hill? On a very steep hill because of the excessive weight the converter may stall when you try to take off from a stand still that maybe what you are talking about is it OK otherwise? Like out on the road?
WME
The 22R was made 81-90 with 2 row or single row timing chain. The 22RE was made 83-97. So an 87 could be either. The OP said he changed the head so I would hope he knows the difference between a carb and EFI
Derek up North
I think that well before '87 all Toyota motorhomes used the 22RE. I think they all made the switch by 1985. Of course a 22RE is still a 22R that just happens to be injected.
fred heath
The emissions label under the hood will tell you exactly what engine you have.
