A/C of that era are ammonia based, sealed system.

They can't be recharged only replaced.

NOPE older cab unit ACs use Freon R12, newer AC use R134. Sealed roof units "normally" R22. Refers are the ammonia based things in an RV.

I have a 1978 Toyota Chinook with factory cab AC.  It uses R12 refrigerant and a Toyoda compressor.  Here are some photos of a spare setup I have I yanked out of a 1977 Toyota Chinook.  Note the R12 on the spec tag.

My bad.......

Was thinking roof top a/c. Mine is ammonia based and cannot be recharged.

I converted my cab air to r134a 2 years ago.  It still puts out extremely cold air.
