The ads I see seem to mimic pretty well my other surfing patterns/interests. Google Analytics? So what other sites/searches have you been doing? :)

Could be - but if so - Google is :WAY off its mark with me.  No "wife swapping" sites, no "adultery" sites, no porn sites, etc.    So, who the heck nows?  That being said, I did a search a week or so ago for a brass petcock and it was kind of amazing the kind of crap that came up in that search!  Hey, I WAS researching Bill Clinton to see if he now has a felony record (or not). Maybe HIS name triggered it.

Those types of links often show up  when you are doing searches that supposedly link back to this forum but misdirect you. Especially true when clicking on images. If you put an add-on such as WOT...world of trust on your browser you can avoid them as that software will throw up a warning flag not to click on the image or on a link.

I always have my browser set to clear my history when I close the browser. I also use a program called ghostery to suppress the ads so I don't have to look at them while I am browsing.

New computer...hope you put some anti malware software on it before you started any surfing activity.

It's actually a "refurbished" Dell.  I got it instead of brand new because it came with a new 1 Terrabyte harddrive and Windows 7 instead of 10. Also an I7 processor.  So the software including the OS is a fresh install.  Anti-virus is the free one from Microsoft - i.e. Microsoft Security Essentials.

One thing I later found out.  I bought this refurbished computer because the keys wore off my old HP. I had to use an external keyboard with it and got sick of it taking up so much room.  Anyway - to my  point.  I wanted Windows 7 Prof.   That because I did not want to lose any of my programs I use everyday like MS Word 10, Corele Photo X5, etc.  I have half-a-dozen programs that Microsoft say will NOT work with Windows 10.   Long story a little shorter.  I bought this refurbished Dell with Win 7, along with a brand new Lenevo with Windows 10 (as a spare for my wife).  Well guess what?  I tried installing all my old programs on the Windows 10 system and they all seem to work fine.  I suspect Windows says they are not compatible because of the many users who have touch-screens with  Win 10.  I do not.  So - ends up I could of had the brand-new computer with Win 10 that was cheaper then the used Dell, and been fine. Only program I found that would not run on Win 10 is the Microsoft anti-virus.  It will not run MS Security Essentials. It uses a new program that is also free. Can't recall the name.  One thing with the new computer that REALLY threw me off. I could find no place to search, or look for, programs.  I finally discovered why.  In Win 10 - they are ALL CALLED "Apps" now, regardless if a 800 MB large program or a 2 MB "app." That threw me off at first.

For years, I've just installed free versions of 'AVG' and 'Malwarebytes' and, so far so good.

I'm bummed that my old versions of MS Office and Autocad won't work with my new laptop.

MS Office was the main reason I did not want Windows 10.  I have three versions here.   2002, 2007,and 2010.  When I switched from XP to Vista - no issues and version 2002 worked fine as did all else I had.  But when I switched to Windows 7 - I had many problems with several programs.  Had to switch to Office 2007 for it to work perfect.  Oddly, on my wife's laptop with Windows 8 - Office 2007 would not work very well so we had to switch to Windows 10.  But with my new laptop with Windows 10 - Office 2007 appears to work well. Main problem now with MS Office 10 is sometimes Microsoft will not let me "energize" it.  It's one of those programs that entering the key code is not enough to make it work. It then has to be approved by Microsoft either on-line or by phone. It's a crap shoot.   Sometimes they say "no" and that I've installed it too many times, and then sometimes - they say OK.  No rhyme or reason to it that I can perceive.

Forget about Microsoft Office programs and ever needing to pay money for new versions of it. The open source clone version "OpenOffice" works great and it will open all your old MS office files and also can save them with that same type of office file extension for export should you need to send them to someone using MS Office. Unless you were forced to use MS Office at work as well as at home I could not see any reason to ever put it on your PC when there is a no cost alternative that does what you need. We have been a MS Office free zone for 10 years now. No problems with writing documents, creating spreadsheets or doing presentations. It does run on Windows 10 or older versions of Windows as well as having versions for Mac and Linux.

Open Office product page.

I've got Open Office and Libre Office.  There are still things I much prefer in the MS Office Suite. If I could not install it - then I'd use the free stuff.  But when I can - I see it as big plus.  That all said, Libre Office saved me last week when I needed to open up some MS Works files and MS Word 10 could not open them.   I tried it with Libre Office 4.3 and it opened those .WPS files just fine.

The main program I really do not want to lose is what is now Corele Paintshop Pro X something or other.  I started with it when it was called "Picture Publisher" and I used it with Windows 3.11 and 95.   Over the years it has morphed into Paintshop Pro X2, X5, etc.  Since I've learned it pretty well over the years - I do NOT want to buy and learn a new photo editing program.

I have not paid for a program in many years.  That is my point. I don't WANT to pay and DO want to keep my older programs. All of them I got for free, one way or the other.

Until I need to actually do something new and unique on a computer - there is no reason to update or get new. Not unless I am forced to run a new OS that is not compatible with an older program.  The reality is - there is little that my programs I had back with Window 3 do much differently then newer programs do now with Windows 10.  At least not things I do. I used to write HTML with Java and Pearlscript on a lot of old computers and operating systems. I edited video and sound files the same. Wrote text the same.

I wiped it and did a fresh install.  Today I am getting ads for some sort of German wire connectors. Petsmart stuff, and for flowers of all things.  Note I have never bought flowers for anyone in my life - dead or alive. My wife is also not the sort to care about dead flowers.  Seems to be no rhyme or reason to the ads I only get when here at this Website.  I get all kinds of junk ads when at Yahoo but there I expect it. Also the Yahoo ads often make sense and they are in line with stuff I buy. Here?  I don't get it.  The flowers ad today makes as little sense as the adultery site.

Mac address of NIC cannot be "wiped". if they simply store the device MAC alongside the cookie data they persist the former user's profile even if the pc's GUID is changed from OS refresh...

You kind of lost me.  I have a new 1 T hard-drive.  Are you saying there is cookie data or something similar stored in a chip somewhere like in the B.I.O.S.?

I am saying that every pc that has a network interface card (NIC) (or wireless ) has an FCC ID called a MAC address that is unique. It is available to query , just as IP address etc is in traffic and can be aggregated along side cookie info; a slick developer will use this as both a composite key identifier or a potential identifier as no 2 MACs are the same. The OS is just the GUID or globally unique identifier that comes from your OS (aka windows) and will in theory change when you format and reload a PC. (usually the cookies coming from your browsing history are indexed by your GUID) and thus the host now knows what you have looked at and ferrets that back to the "ad choices" google people; and they make sure that you see those adds because there is a statistical probability you are more likely to be engaged and commit to a purchase on said things; possibly even a polygamy site membership for example or donuts from Timmy H.

As for the polygamy, there seems to be lots of swapping discussed on this site; Rear ends and trannies, both of which could result in some curious marketing!

You might be on to something.  I had a post deleted from a farm tractor restoration forum because I mentioned the word "petcock." The digital robots regarded it as a lewd word.

I can see where wanting to "hook up" a new "trannie" might  send up a red flag.
