Took advantage of the long weekend and made a trek out to the Oregon coast. There aren't many big climbs to make on this part of 101, so it's perfect for my little 4 cylinder. The crowds mostly stay north of Newport, so there wasn't much worry to find spots to camp for the night (including Floras Lake & Sunset Bay).

Labor day weekend for us. Just a night or two - probably Gold Beach.

Last year we did Tillamook OR to Petaluma CA. OR has CA beat when it comes to camping spots

That's the truth. California is very over regulated and overpopulated. The latter being the cause of the former...

But once you go inland just a little, there are tons of great, cheap or free campsites in northern California.

I couldn't find a thing anywhere north of San Francisco. All private land and none of the wealthy people there want anyone boon docking anywhere near their neighborhood. I did find one campground. It was in the $50 a night range...No way!

Graton Casino will let you park for days. Santa Rosa has lakeside camping for 25 bucks. Lots of places to camp. Jones Beach in Guerneville is one of my favorites. Still 25 bucks after all these years to camp by the river. On 101 once you go north of Willits there is no one for hundreds of miles. Oh maybe a couple of people but wide open country.

I don't quite call those places coastal...but I take your point.

Looking at the map, I see there more camping places than I remember on the northern coast. I just remember the feeling I had driving through there. Much less open land available to travelers than any other state I've been in. But like I said, once you get off the coast, there's quite a bit of open camping.

I was in an Oregon town for almost two weeks because a guy approached me to talk about my camper. He let me park in front of his house the whole time. I guess he hosts a lot of couch surfers, and does a bit himself.

It's definitely a good way to go, and to meet a local who might be willing to show you around.

Were on the Oregon coast rite now. At Bastendorff beach. Camping for free in a area that says 24 hour stay max. Going clamming with -2.0 tides. There are 3 other toyhomes here a sea brease and 3 warriors or spirits including ours.

Just got back from three days on the coast, saw a total of 6 toys while out and about. To the guy that was going to Florence on hwy126 driving the bright pink toy with blue writing on it, you take the cake!

Actually I meant to let you know, and keep forgetting when I have internet service and remembering when I don't...that I've already blown through Washington.

By the time I left Oregon, I had "cool town" fatigue...brewery fatigue...I just don't care about cool downtowns and breweries for the time being. Plus I'm running low on money. Time to head back to Montana where I have more than enough friends who will let me park and stay with them, in a town I know and so don't need to be out spending money.

I met up with my brother and his family last week in Seattle for just a couple days, then drove over the North Cascades, and out of WA. Too bad...but I'm not going to get to really check out Washington this year.
