Replacing A Fridge

Recommended Posts

Just purchased a 1990 warrior with a bad fridge. After lots of cleaning and fiddling I finally got it fired up but no cooling. It's a small fridge, only 40 inches high. I'd like to replace it myself with a like model. Any others that have tackled this, and could provide some info on what model was used, and replacement how-to tips, I would love to get some inputs. Thanks!

More than likely you have a Dometic fridge (perhaps a Norcold) installed. You can find dimension of the common RV fridges here:-

Replacement is done through the cab passenger door after removing the seat(s).

Some also go the cheaper route and install a cheap 110v 'dorm' fridge. If 110v only operation works for you, something to consider. Not good if you plan to boondock often.

Others have chosen to replace jut the 'cooling unit'. This will cost ~1/2 the price of a new fridge. An option if the rest of your fridge isn't too tired and beat up!

P.S. My WAG is that you've got a Dometic RM2501 or RM2510.

Thanks Derek

Replacing the cooling unit may be a viable option. But i still need help with figuring out which model unit I have, it is a Norcold. I'll attach a pic of the data label, (much oblterated). Also is a pic of the control panel, and it is located along the bottom of the refridgerator not on top like most refer models I have seen online.

OK have searched and found some other posts where Warrior owners said they had the Norcold 875eg2. According to Thetford/Norcold that fits your 40 inch height

scroll almost to bottom

Here are the cooling units. I've used this place before. Good stuff unless you can find something closer to you

This fridge is tall and narrower than most. Finding another replacement would take some alterations inside to fit. Cooling unit is much easier. If you can you can also put boards on your dinette to protect them and install cooling unit inside your camper. That's what the first place I went to did in my Sunrader. One I bought from rvicebox was for a different motorhome.

Thanks all,

Good to know what my model number is for sure. Now that I know what it is supposed to be, looking back at the obliterated data tag, I can see what I thought was a 675 must be an 875. Thanks Linda!

But here is the best news, I let it burn on gas for 2 hours plus, and the cold plate is now 29 degrees! Yahoo! looks like it is working just takes a long time. Thanks Derek! I now have it plugged into 120V AC, we'll see if that element is working too. Great forum, Mike

hello and welcome the friges make no noise you need to be level front to back and side to side . it takes all night relly to but you should start to fell cold in the freezer area pretty fast. you did not say is it on gas or electric some s ay gas is faster. yes they do have condensers the refrigerent is ammonia it is boialed to circulate when working correct they cool whel and are a joy to have in the outback . will run for days on very little propanel

They do not have a compressor that runs on electricity. The ammonia is vaporized by the heat from the propane flame or the electric heating element. It condenses in the cooling coil.

Hi I'm new to motorhome fridges. Do they have condensers, will it make noise if it's runnin? I have plugged mine in and haven't heard anything or felt it get cold.

Some do and some do not. Your's is an absorbtion type with no moving parts. Some RV refrigerators are compressor and motor type just like a household unit. Norcold made many with 22 volt AC compressors and a built-in inverters to run on 12 volts DC. Found in many Winnebagos et. al. Nice thing about the compressor type units is they run fine on uneven ground. Downside is you can't make them run on propane. That is - unless you've got a propane fueled electric generator. I've got the Norcold models DE 828, DC 230, and DE 254. All with 22 volt AC compressors and built-in inverters. Great working units.

One side-note. I realize you got your's working. A comment about having new cooling units installed. Big price that winds up with a new cooling unit but used controls. Lots of things can still go wrong with a old refrig that has a new unit installed. Not something I'd ever spend money on. Plenty of good used working 3-way absorbtion refrigerators around for $200 or less.
