Maineah Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I own a 2011 Tacoma 4X4 it's a 4 liter V6 with a 6 speed. Normal driving I get about 20 MPG. Hook up my trailer towing some thing around 3000# I get 10 if I take it out on the highway the total weight would be in the 7000# +range truck and trailer. I used to have a 2.7 liter 5 spd. Tacoma, empty I could get maybe 22-23 MPG add a trailer 10 MPG. Frankly I far prefer the V6 and my right arm feels better for it. Quote

Would I need to change my motor mounts? Would it be difficult to mount up to my Toyotransmission? Suggestions please. Quote
Marshie Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I have a 94 Toyota, 6 cylinder, and I got 16mpg. on a 500 mile freeway trip from Orange Co. to Sonoma Co.,Cal. in the summer, with near to 100 degree weather, all day. I ran my dash ac, full force, most of the trip. That includes coming over the Grape Vine. I kept it at a steady 55mph, with about 300lbs of humans, and no cargo, just empty. It might have had water in the tanks, I don't know. I just bought it without checking those things. My first Toyota motorhome, was a Sunrader, 18ft. 4 cylinder. I never checked the mpg, but I don't think it got much better, and it had a lot less power, and when I would come to a hill, I would get the speed up as far back as possible, so I wouldn't wind up going 45 by the top of the hill. Possible pounding out of the body in the engine compartment to fit the engine: yes Mount to transmission: you'd need to fabricate an adaptor plate out of metal. And the V8 might be too powerful for both the transmission and axles/differential and you'll start breaking stuff. This a major, major job. Quote

Plenty of people do it, but they are people who do it. I'll just be honest, and it's not an insult, because I was this guy once: if you're asking what it takes to do a swap on a toyota motorhome Internet forum, you aren't capable of doing the swap. Yet. Fabrication is usually something that seasoned mechanics get into, not average vehicle owners. Unless you have thousands of dollars to throw at it. Quote
WME Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 The 496 weighs as much as two 22re engines. To say nothing about how big it is, ya know that's 7.4L. If you really want Power look at the Lexus 4L v-8 its a common swap into Toy P/Us. And if you really want a Chevy then a 5.3 L HO LS series V-8 is your answer. They can be found as an all aluminum engine. The 6L HO puts out more HP than the 496 and is the same physical size as the 5.3L. Quote
