My 87Sunland

hi everyone!

My wife and I recently purchased a 1987 Sunland Express 21', 4 cyl auto. It has 24500 original miles. It does have the upgraded axle. It needed an alternator and fan clutch. I have replaced those, I've also had the valves adjusted and transmission serviced, and all belts and hoses have been replaced. Also seems like I've been doing (or will be) a million other things, I've replaced both waste valves, now i've got to repair two small holes one in each holding tank that had big gobs of silicone on them, I'll use fiberglass. My tires are all good, date codes from 2000 and 2001. What tire pressure are you guys running front and rear?

My refridge is only a two way, I dont feel comfortable with the propane on while driving so I think a 400 watt power inverter for its sole use should suffice for driving(any input?). It also has a 2.5K Kohler generator, Runs a little rough but a new plug, gas filter, air filter, oil change should help.

Previous owner(s) also used silicone to seal around joints but it seems to peel right off with a liitle rubing, I've been told plumbers putty works great, I've tried it and it seems to, any input on this?

W

Any other ideas for me, what to look for etc. I've also read some of the posts about a larger fuel tank, I think this one only has a stock 15 gallon tank like my 86 toy pickup.

Well thanks ahead of time, good site by the way,

Richard & Karen

Hi Richard and Karen

Thanks and welcome to the site!

Congrats on your purchase :D . Sounds like a great rig!

I also do not drive with the refer running on propane. I have a three way refer and so I run it on 12vdc on the road. I have a relay system that supplys power only when the igmition is on. You could possibly do the same using an inverter just make sure the relay is big enough to handle the current the inverter will need. I have read many questions from folks wanting to know if it could be done but I can not remember if anyone has actually done it. It takes alot of current to make it all happen and stock output altinators just are not up to it. My reason for using a relay also relates to current draw. It takes only minets to discharge the coach battery with additional current from the altinator even on the 12volt side. The 120 volt side needs even more because of the loss in the inverter. Another option some use is run the generator while driveing to power the 120vac side of the refer.

Gas tanks have been another huge discussion topic. I'm lucky that I have a 26 gallon tank built just for the sunraders as an option. Finding a larger tank from a wrecking yard might be nill to impossible. JcWhitney I think has a larger tank. Another option is to have someone build one for you. No matter what option its expensive. Another consideration is the added weight. 10 more gallons is around 80 pounds. The extended range is worth the weight though. But maybe not if a tank costs $600.
