Converter Replacement

Progressive Dynamics has just released a direct slide in replacement for the old 6300 units. It uses the same electronics and components as their stand alone units except the install is now extremely easy. These all have the same "Charge Wizard" technology that their standard units have and they come with a modern DC distribution bus that you will need to change also.

How did your swap out go? 

I have an '87 Sunrader and want to upgrade my converter. I used a progressive dynamic intelicharger in my winnebago view and it saved my batteries from sulfating.

Your rig draws a lot less than even 45 amps with everything turned on so there is no advantage to a larger unit to just power things. The main advantage to the larger units is a faster battery recharge when running the generator.

Got solar, stay at camp grounds, don't boondock for long periods of time in one place??? then the advantage is less .

WME, great input! Very helpful info. Bigger is not necessarily better. I do hope to install solar and use all LED lights.

So I'm intimidated by a new converter install! My old converter works fine but when parked in my driveway connected to shore power I installed a battery switch and I disconnect my coach battery from the converter and put on a Battery Tender. Takes about 1 minute and no boiled battery. Not sure how long it takes those old converters to fry a battery. Any idea Folks?

Depends on how the water is in the battery, anywhere from a week to months. The old converters only put out 2-5 amps but they run way over 14v and that is the battery killer. In the "old" days I just put a timer on the charger, 1/2 hour a day

You can use  the old chargers put them on a timer for no more than 2 hours a day. However the modern chargers are light years better.

The modern chargers weight the power towards battery charging so if you coach power demands are low the majority of the power goes to battery charging. The old stuff had two systems one was battery charging and 10 amps was a lot most were in the 3-5 amp range they however did make quite a lot of amps for 12 volt use.

Maineah, I use the Deltron Battery Tender Jr instead of the converter to keep my coach battery fully charged while @ home. Isn't that unit Modern not "old?"

Yeah that's fine they at least have a pretty good regulator system. If you have a modern switching converter/charger they can be left on but the old ones with a big ugly transformer will cook a battery.

My wife and I had just returned from a camping trip in our popup and I kind of jokingly said we need a motor home! The very same day I drove by the Nova Star really not having a clue about it or Toy homes two days later I stopped and bought it for $2500. The guy had been using it as an a place to sleep when he came up to deal with an apartment house he owned it was filthy sitting under a tree for years. It only had 28,000 miles on it. I did a great deal of work on it and in the process learned a lot about Toy Homes. The story even gets a little stranger I was the electronic's dept head for a Sheriffs dept and retired in 2010. It was time to reduce the fleet so I sold the MH to my neighbor for $6,500.  I made him drive it around they even went camping. He said he could not deal with the fact is was SOOO slow I told him they were very popular just advertise it. Nope he said he would take $5,800 and I could keep any thing above that short story I sold it again for $6,300!  I must have had 25 calls on it he couple that bought love it and still have it and have done a fantastic job with it new body parts etc. it looks brand new. I have a friend that owns one last year I redid the interior in hers for her they are out there just keep looking. I can say they are one of the best ones out there very rugged and fiberglass!

Oye.....

I've done 2 replacements since that one.

Now I do not even have a converter as my charging and AC/DC/xfer is handled by a Xantrex 2 KW unit.  Uber sweet.

Thanks for checking in......I have not done the swap out, my jury is still out. This install looks great. Did you do the swap our? How difficult was it....I have been told "Careful Iflyfish you could hurt yourself with a wheelbarrow". It was my older brother Journeyman Machinist and Journeyman Mechanic.

Does this pulse 14 amps like the Intelicharger? One of my goals is to prevent batteries sulfating over the winter.

Well there is a little more to the story before I moved back to Maine I owned two repair shops in MD (it was driving me to drink more!) I started working on Toyota's when they had 8R engines in them we specialized in foreign vehicles (I had worked for British Leyland) so we were quite busy. Frankly I’m glad the only work I do now is on our own vehicles. I still have a “Toyota” motor home because I pull my camper with a Tacoma!
