It seems that the piece connecting the toilet to the black tank has come unscrewed somehow or it was never put on correctly. Is there some type of solvent to make it easy to disconnect it and put it back the right way?

If it's not sealant, that white stuff in the threads is likely years of urine creating kind of a calcium deposit.  I'd try vinegar and a metal bristle brush to clean the threads.  I think you'll have to remove the toilet to screw it properly back into place once the tank is re-hung.  It also looks like the lower threads of the pipe attaching to the tank are terribly cross threaded as well, so your toilet may have been installed at 430 on a Friday!  I'd fix that as well as it may also give way.  If you have trouble getting your toilet and the flange up, check in with me as I struggled and it was not intuitive - will fill you in if yours is also odd.

So you’re saying to first remove the toilet?

You don’t have to remove the toilet if you don’t want, just clean the threads and put thread tape on it and screw it back in, run it to check for leaks and your good to go.

You could reconnect them. If not it’s easy to look down and see the level

A. longer screw, push in and elongate the wellnut and push the bolt in and pull the wellnut out by the flange.

B.  Remove the screw and cut off the flange off. Push the rest in to the tank and fergetabout it. Then get a new nut

Quick question you must know the answer to.  I am going to remove the toilet to convert to a composting toilet.  I want to buy the plug to close off the black tank before removing.  Do you know the size?  I'm guessing 3" but not sure.  Thanks for any info.🙂
