htioki
Could it be the speedomoter sensor? Leading up to this problem was erratic behavior of the speedometer needle. Below is the link of the sensor from TPD. 83181-35070 - Toyota Parts Deal Also, not sure if it's related, the CEL came on for short time and the light turn off by itself. It was on OD going up on a slight uphill on a freeway. How do I pull codes? Thanks in advance for the help.
Maineah
It's very likely is related to the speed sensor. Hey you need one any way!
linda s
Here's how to pull trouble codes Toyota 88-91 Pickup or 4Runner – TroubleCodes.net California mini truck is not far from you. I don't think they will do a diagnostic, but you can ask. If you need parts they will cost half what you would pay for new. I'm thinking speedometer head itself. Little tiny gears that spin very fast tend to fail eventually. Linda S
htioki
Thank you for the responses. Sounds like I need to do more research/diagnostic. Also curious to hear feedback on speed sensors from RockAuto, as they are cheaper than the dealer.
htioki
I was able to pull the codes by following the instructions in the link from Linda: Trouble code: 42 Fault Location: Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) - circuit Probable cause: wiring, VSS, ECM Any suggestion what I should check first? How severe is this issue,? Edited July 25, 2022 by htioki
linda s
Here is the part number you need Toyota 83181-35070 Rock Auto does have a couple matching Because of the speedo and odometer not functioning properly I'm still thinking Speedo cluster or speedometer cable. From reading some other sites it looks like they can throw back a signal to the ECU that will trigger a code 42. Linda S
Maineah
I don't believe it has a cable.
htioki
No speedometer cable on mine. VSS is fine, it was the speedometer. I removed the speedo gauge and took it to a speedometer repairman who re-soldered a few connections and replaced a couple capacitors on the circuit board. If you're in So Cal and run into same issue, this is the speedo repair shop that repaired mine (call first): S W Speedometer 1041 N Grand Ave #144, Covina, CA 91724 800 833-4669 Also found this place where you can send your cluster to have it repaired.
