Winterizing the rig

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Want to get some opinions on winterizing issues while traveling:

I am on three weeks into a two months trip covering sevdn states, 10 National Parks and just as many National Monuments, it will cover 4000 miles to see "America the Beautiful".

When I started from Oregon my rig was winterized. Now traveling Utah,  through Arches NP and west on hwy 95 temperatures have been in high 80s so I started using sink and toilet. As I head towards Bryce Canyon National Park it is getting colder. Nights in could get into low 30s even in high 20s

Now here is my question:

How do you prepare for such variations in temperatures ?

At what point I rewinterize and the de-winterize ??

Walls, floor are foam insulation therefore it is like a inside space. Should I be worrying about freezing the water tank and water lines.

Please enlighten me, thank you.

It takes a long time to freeze tanks and pipes. A temp dip at night isn't going to do it unless it was in negative temps. Also your in there so rig is being heated.

Fresh water tank and pipes all are inside.  Water heater is on I assume.

Only part exposed to cold is black and grey tank.  They create their own heat if you let them. I never use formaldehyde based tank treatments. I use organic ones. Biologics speed the breakdown of waste. That causes some residual heat, aka, tanks won't freeze unless far below 32 degrees.

Winter tips...

Leave inside cabinet doors open, this protects plumbing and fresh water tank.

If your in a campground, a small portable electric heater works wonders. A lot of stores are in a close out mode and the heaters are cheap. The RV heater uses a lot of battery so a couple of days of boondocks will push the house battery. One day and then a drive will keep things up

With EMPTY holding tanks pour a qt of RV antifreeze (pink stuff) in each tank. This will protect the valves.

If it gets stupid cold one night "flush" the toilet with straight RV antifreeze.

An almost full tank takes a lot longer to freeze. So plan your dumps with an eye on the weather forecast.
