All we can do is guess. This may seem silly but one thing you can try (I know from experience). Take a jug of water with you. Pour it over the starter when it wont start. Sometimes a starter going bad will start when it's cold but not after it gets hot.

Well there a lot more diesel Toyota's in Australia than there are here so might be good to find a group there. But your problem is very likely your injection pump. When your van warms up the fuel is more liquid and the pump can't build up the required pressure. You could try some diesel fuel system cleaner to try to get it more responsive . If not time to find a diesel mechanic to fix the system

If it doesn't start it is one thing if it doesn't crank it is another. The older gear reduction starters had issues with a copper disk inside of the starter it would just click and do nothing. That is repairable fairly simply.

is the voltage reading with nothing turned on, or is it when attempting to start.   voltmeter on the battery, turn key to start. what does the meter say.   9.6 volts or lower means charge and retest. if voltage is still under 9.6 , battery is bad
