ChinookStreet
Hello! I have a 1976 toyota Chinook and recently got the engine redone. It runs relatively well - but the gentleman who fixed it told me I needed a new inverter to get the fridge and outlets working. Any recommendations on a good inverter for my old girl? Maineah
Be advised the inverter runs on battery power so everything is a factor of 10 you plug in so if something needs 2 amps plugged in it will demand 20 amps from the battery. The fridge uses a heating element to work plugged in, it is a battery hog running on an inverter switch to gas when you park. You should have a power cord to make AC (house power stuff) work. What he maybe talking about is a converter/charger it charges the battery and runs the lights it does not power the outlets.
ChinookStreet
Thank you for the reply. It is a converter that needs replacing. My mistake. Any recommendations on converters? Edited August 2, 2020 by ChinookStreet
linda s
35 amp should be plenty for a Chinook https://www.ebay.com/itm/WFCO-8700-Series-35-Amp-RV-Power-Center-Converter-Battery-Charger-WF-8735-PB/402321100227?hash=item5dac34cdc3:g:~BEAAOSw4CFYnG2Y I think this is a pretty good price too. Maineah
One of the cheaper and best upgrades you can do. On the older ones there is a little bit of wiring that needs to be done because of the way the converters worked so if you are electrically challenged it's best left for some on that have been there before. ChinookStreet
Good day. I’m waiting on the new converter - should be here soon. What deep cycle battery would you recommend for that setup? Edited August 10, 2020 by ChinookStreet
WME
If your going to be a road tripper then , Sams Club, Costco or Walmart. They have stores every where so replacements/warranty is easy. Get the biggest DEEP CYCLE that will fit. Common sizes are GP 24, 11"x9" x6.5 - 75ah, GP 27, 12"x9"x6.5" - 90ah and GP 31, 13"x9"x7" - 110ah . Measurements are just approximate so measure your space and prospective battery carefully.
ChinookStreet
It’s trending toward being an everyday sleeping/living in it situation. I’m considering a yellow top from NAPA. thoughts?
WME
No personal experience with that style. A quick look shows that their size 31 battery has only 75 ah vs a 110 ah for a lead acid.
