Mike and Joyce Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 We are reburbishing our 1986 toyota dolphin mini camper and working currently on the front end. We need to replace the steering damper and are having a hard time finding the proper replacement. The one we believe we need for the specific model we have has a greasable ball joint knuckle. All the others available and much more reddily available have a pin at the same point of contention. What our question is is does anyone know if the pin is actually preferable to the knuckle since the knuckle seems so seldom used and is the damper with the pin able to be used in place of the one with the knuckle? Look forward to conversation and input from others experience! Quote
Maineah Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Be very careful with the steering dampers it is not something to experiment with they look the same but the stroke of the piston is important you could end up with one that is too short and it will limit your steering travel dramatically. Quote
linda s Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Here's the Toyota part. Pricey but having part number may help you choose what to buy https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toyota~damper~assy~steering~45700-39035.html?Make=Toyota&Model=Pickup&Year=1986&Submodel=&Filter=(d=USA;1=22REC;3=T1;4=DLX;5=ATM;6=4HC;7=RCB;9=HVY;10=WT;12=EFI;13=IV;0=RN75L-SDTEA3W)&Location=power_train_chassis/front_steering_gear_link,,45700 Linda S Quote
