1988dolphin
I have a 1988 Dolphin w/22RE, 4:88 gears and an automatic transmission. Often when I shift into reverse and less often when shifting into forward, with engine at a smooth idle, the engine will just quit as if I turned off the ignition switch. There is no RPM slow down or stumbling of the engine, it just stops. I raised the idle speed to see if that helps and it does a bit. Still 50% of the time the engine just stops when I shift into reverse. One the road the vehicle runs well and has acceptable power. I have searched for vacuum leaks and found none. This is a mystery. DanAatTheCape
indeed. the higher speed helping is a clue. Wonder if your transmission is grabbing to tight - ie torque converter....
1988dolphin
I just put a new head on the engine and in the process I no longer have a stalling issue. So I guess I will now know what the issue was but I will get over it.
