WME Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 (edited) Woke up with a sore shoulder and arm. A couple of days of Aleve still really sore. So on Mon I go to family Doctor, push, twist, poke..humm. Says to you need to go get MRI, OK says I that takes a couple of weeks herein the boondocks. No says he, I'll call now and you head over. Slightly ominous back ground music Spent 30 min in what sounds like a bad trash compactor, MRI folks say take this DVD to Doc now....so ,back to the Doc...more , hummmm. Music grows ominous. Doc says there is a circuit rider specialist in town today, Wyomming after all, I'll call, you get. Even more ominous music. Get to the specialist, who is a back and spine Doc...more hummmm. Doc says I'll be right back, overhear Doc calling hospital asking for next urgent OR space. Really really ominous music. Doc comes back and says you need surgery ASAP. The next urgent but not emergency slot is Wed, so here the list of pre-op stuff you need to get done NOW. You have a ruptured disk between C5 and C6 it's pressing against your spine and it's a large one. If grows you could be paralysed. Like black cloud n' lightening music. I got all the pre-op stuff done Then drove to the hospital Wed morning, did I mention that's it's Wy? The hospital is a 5 hr drive and it's Eclipse week with a boat load of tourists. Made my appointment by 10 min. Do more paperwork and put on the hang your butt gown out on and wait and wait. The surgery on the previous patient had a problem, natch. I go in at 7:30 pm. Out at 10:30 pm. I now on my way to becoming a Borg, the Doc fused the 2 vertebrae and installed and screwed a Ti cage to join both vertebrae. Because I was so late going in and I need a required number of iv antibiotic treatments I get to spend 2 fun filled days in the hospital Prognosis is good, I get to wear the human equivalent of a doggie cone of shame for 6 weeks, lifting no more than 15 lbs..... Small ray of something music Edited August 18, 2017 by WME Quote

Small ray of something music Get well WME. Think of this as a dodged bullet. In C range you are talking not just ordinary paralysis but impact on every bodily function. You dont want the alternative. These things can take not just 6 weeks like a common fractured bone, but upto 18months to fully resolve. Take care. Quote
redskinman Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 Well from the way this story started out I thought it was going to end up worse, still not good but it could have been worse, good luck with your recovery Quote
Maineah Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 Ouch hope your recovery is quick. Yeah an MRI is kind of like laying in a big metal pipe with an entire team of people outside beating on it with hammers. Quote
jjrbus Posted August 18, 2017 Posted August 18, 2017 Sorry to hear but glad it was caught in time! I have noticed with my friends what I call the Superman syndrome. No matter what the Dr tells them to do, they think they can do more faster. Dr told me I can lift 5 lbs in one week, 12 lbs will be ok in 2 days, I'll just be careful. I know you will not be like that but might want to mention it too your friends Good luck to you. Jim SW FL Quote
WME Posted August 19, 2017 Author Posted August 19, 2017 Superman syndrome yea. Right now lots of major drugs and pain. But in 4 weeks when things don't hurt so much.I worry me about me. Quote
linda s Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 I always find that the people who live like they are invincible accomplish more and are happier. The people who actually start believing they are old shrivel up and don't last too long. At 65 I'm stronger and more active than I was at 40. Like they say " Just do It " Linda S Quote
TacomaSue Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 WME--I sure hope you get to feeling better and back on the road! I haven't been on this forum for a long while. Sold my Toy home, but every once in awhile, I have to look in and see how everyone is doing. TacomaSue Quote
