  1. Good Morning my new friends, about a month ago I was able to pick up my first Toyota Camper! We had been looking for a long time and the timing lined up right for us to get this 1990 Americana. It looked like it had been re-modeled well with some nice addition like solar and a deiseal furnace but some other area where more just patch up, band aid jobs like the over cab section. I didn't take any before pictures but when we got it there was a piece of plastic siding covering up the front window. Once I got it home and took off the siding I was able to start seeing the water damage and mold, not a nightmare amount but enough to warrant a remodel. After looking around the forums and watching every youtube video that came up when I searched "Toyota RV Remodel" I found out that there was not a lot of info on this particular model. I am about half way through rebuilding the over cab floor and walls and wanted to start posting the progress in hopes that it may help someone in the same situation as I am. One question I have is this, I was going to just copy what was originally installed for the side walls (two layers of plywood with a thin layer of veneer) but I was thinking about changing it and doing two layer of insulation board with a layer of veneer. Any thoughts?
  2. Hi all, It's so exciting 😃! My wife and I are completely new Toyota RV Owners since just yesterday I bought a 1991 Odyssey Americana in central Pennsylvania. It is the Fargo 21.5' configuration and is in fairly good condition overall, low mileage (68K miles) and seems to run fine. I just drove it about 60 miles yesterday to pay a surprise visit to my parents and tomorrow I'll begin the 800 mile journey home to Wisconsin. We are very much looking forward to hitting the road with it. When my grandparents retired in the early 1960s they bought a "Scottie" camper and drove across the country with it. Now that we're looking at possible retirement, perhaps we'll follow their tire tracks 😎. While good overall condition, I'm reminded that this camper is 28 years old, no spring chicken, and it will need some love and attention. I figure one "RV-Years" is about 2.5 people years. So my "28 year old" RV is about what I'll be when I'm 70, which isn't all that far off. I'm posting some photos and hope to learn from the collective wisdom that I've discovered in this forum. Here are some observations and questions: We will probably keep the interior configuration, at least for now, and right now everything works (with possible exception of the water heater). We do want to rid the camper of the 80's carpet-on-everything theme. We will probably do laminate on the floor, not sure what to do on the ceiling. We're not sure what we'll find when we remove the carpeting. Any suggestions, especially for the ceiling? We want to give the exterior a major make-over, both functional (leaks????) and cosmetic (looks 28 years old). The first step I believe is to get remove the original stripes that were adhesive decals, but I want to do this without damaging the fiberglass underneath. In some areas, as you can see from the photos, the decals are already gone, other areas have a little remaining adhesive, other areas have relatively pristine decals still adhered. What method/solvents/etc. are recommended for removing these from fiberglass without leaving worse marks / damage? I was told by the original owner that the front window had leaked, but he repaired it with some super-sticky tape, perhaps Peel & Seal. Also, the window, which is plastic, is so weathered it's opaque. Or maybe it was originally that way. Either way, I'd like to see out of it, clear as glass. Two questions: (a) Are replacement windows available? Where? (b) How can I effectively re-seal this so I can remove the tape and not have leaks? The roof may have leaked at one point. I've read that the Americana has a rubber roof, but I can't really tell because a previous owner coated the roof with the type of material used as a truck bed liner, and the recent owner added a couple waterproof panels and some sealing tape. I don't see any present leaks, but I don't want to keep adding bandaids, I'd like to restore it to an original condition. Thoughts? Anyone tackle this on an Odyssey Americana before? The roof also apparently sagged / bowed in a little and left standing water on top. The previous owner reduced this by adding an exterior beam brace - you can see it in the middle on the last photo - to pull the roof up in the center to reduce pooling of water. Does anyone have tips on restoring the correct arch of the roof in a more long-term way, without external bracing? Thanks to all of you for your thoughts on this little restoration project. Looking through the Forum archives I see many of you have taken on much bigger tasks. This is not so daunting, but I'd like to get to a good start, get our new home-on-wheels fixed up, then hit the road. Scott
  3. I have a vintage 1990 Toyota Odyssey - WALL CLOCK - for sale removed carefully from the wall of the cabin. It's pretty nice-look at the photos. It is about 6" diameter, gold in color, and It takes a single AA battery. Anyone who is interested in restoring their Odyssey with a quite nice vintage 'Gold' color clock from an original Odyssey cabin may be interested. I think I can take any reasonable offer to make you a good deal. PS Because the rig has proven to need so much work to do on it-then I anticipated, I'm modying into a weekender rather than to restore it to its beutiful original condition. So, I'm renovating the cabin with a different color of fresh paint, stuff and things, new floor tile, etc. Someone who knows about 'restoration' and fixing things up like the original may be more interested in hanging the beautiful vintage 'gold' color Odyssey WALL CLOCK in their project.
  4. So im into for less than 2k, got it from 3rd owner, only 50400 miles, replaced belts and other wearables and it's running great, the issue is water damage, the roof and paneling under fiberglass is done for, I live in it full time atm due to losing previous RV in a fire in California but I have access to a garage and tools with a cot and plenty of help for when I get to replacing the cab-over, with that being said, I'm going to have to gut and replace all insulation and 2by2, should I start with the rear or front, I'd like to get my bed situated first so I can just stay in it while finishing the rear, if it's smarter to just room up for a month and just do it all at once starting with the biggest problem areas? Is it possible to replace rot with new, section by section after I tear out the appliances and shower/toilet/sink after taking care of the cab-over area? The floors are all still super solid and other than the rot and little replacements like skylight domes and minor things it's a great little rig. I need opinions and just what you guys think you would approach as far as starting restoration and if I can live in it while I do, Thanks y'all https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=11fvXcf0pDGbiffQBSSZeRPp9Fv89jYjK
  5. Hello Everyone, I'm a newbie! I'm about to test drive a V6 1990 Toyota Odyssey! How sought out is this model? ~Mikio ❤♡❤
  6. Hiya folks. So I'm refurbishing an '88/'89 Odyssey and I've run into a problem. The former owner removed the range hood. No big deal, I'll just buy one online, right? WRONG! None of the options available on line seem like they will fit. FIRST, the sizes don't seem right. It appears as though my original range hood was 19" wide. But no one I've talked to has apparently ever heard of a 19" wide range hood. 20" is the smallest anyone seems to know of. SECOND, the cutout size is becoming rare these days. The cutout is roughly 7.5" by 3". Almost all current range hoods are designed for 10" by 3" (or something close to that) cutouts. No big deal though, because I've spoken to a few RV salvage places that have 20" range hoods with the 7.5" by 3" cutout... except THIRD the cutout seems to be in an odd location! Notice in the picture how it starts exactly level with the cabinet. Most range hoods seem to have the cutout about a half-inch or so below where the base attaches. What is going on here? Would anyone out there with an Odyssey mind investigating your range hood a little? Is yours 19" wide or 20"? Do you see a manufacturer name printed anywhere on it? Ventline says they never made a 19" range hood but perhaps Elixir did. It would be a big help if I knew who the manufacturer was and could hunt them down. Thanks for any info you can provide! -Matt
  7. http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/rvs/5480999441.html Hello All, I'm new to this forum and so glad to have access to those in the know on all things Toyota motorhome! I've been reading on here daily in hopes to prepare me for my first rv. I search Craigslist every day and came across this one in San Diego about two weeks ago, it was first listed at $6000 and then reposted at $5800, then down to $5500, and then dropped to $5300 and today posted at $4900. Seems like a good price assuming no water damage and engine is in great shape. Probably due for timing belt? Would love any input before I make the call.
  8. Well, my engine took a dive on me last weekend and I need a complete rebuild. I don't have the time to do the rebuild myself, so I am looking for some mechanic recommendations near Portland Oregon. Or if anyone knows of any rebuilt or used 22R turbos for sale let me know! Thanks in advance.
  9. Hello all, I have a leaning Toyota Motorhome and have been doing some research to replace the rear leaf springs to fix the problem. I was under the truck looking for a part number and saw that there was a sticker on the top leaf that said Alcan Springs. Which mean I do not have OEM springs on my rig. That said I have a few questions: Did the body builder (Odyssey) replace the springs when they put the camper on? Or where the springs replaced by an owner due to failure or aftermarket improvements? Does anybody know the OEM part number for the rr springs? The trucks is a factory 1986 1 Ton 4X4 with a 22RTE. Does anyone have any suggestions for replacement springs? Note I do have Firestone Ride Rite helper bags on the back Thanks in advance for any feedback! Paul
  10. Wondering if by some miracle anyone out there who owns a late 80's/early 90's Odyssey would happen to have some original BLUE curtains lying around? It's the bluish, greenish, greyish velour. I've seen a lot of Odysseys sold in the past where people have completely redone the curtains and I'm thinking it would be great if one of these people happened to still have the originals in their possesion. Or maybe you have a rotted out Odyssey in your yard you're looking to part out... My Odyssey's curtain set is nearly complete, only missing a few pieces... so its hard for me to justify making all new curtains. But somehow a couple pieces were lost (rear window valance, one cabover side window curtain, and privacy curtain for the cabover). I have looked EVERYWHERE trying to match the fabric but it seems impossible. Hoping maybe someday if I'm diligent I will find someone with some of these curtains who doesn't need them. If you can help me in any way... I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!! please e-mail me at: eternitycomplex@yahoo.com for a quicker response. THANKS!!
  11. I have a 87 Odyessy and having problems with the electrical in the coach. I replaced the the battery in the back with a deep cycle batt but I'm only getting power when the ignition is on. I thought that the battery isolator was supposed to limit the draw from the truck power, no? Is there a switch or something that I'm missing? Does anyone have a wiring diagram? Thanks
  12. Title says it all. I was poking around the internet again and found this. It's interesting and heartbreaking at the same time.
  13. We are looking high and low for a smaller Toyota motorhome that is somewhere near to home (so we can see it easily in person and get it checked by a mechanic). I've found a 1990 Toyota Odyssey, with 88,477 miles, and would like to hear from anyone who has this same one and ask for any advice you might have when asking detailed questions about the rig. Here's the posting information about it: 88477k 6 cyl. automatic, cruise control, runs good, shower, separate toilet, stove, refr, furnace, h2o heater all work, awning, new carpet through-out. Truck a/c needs recharge. Good tires, recent front end alignment and bearings repacked. 23 ft. long Your input is GREATLY APPRECIATED!! Thank you!
  14. Hello everyone! Let me introduce myself. My name is Matt and I'm the proud owner of an '89 Leisure Odyssey, Mesa Lounge style. This RV has been my project for almost a year now. It had extensive water damage in the rear and required new wood framing and panels. I have finally reached a point where the rig is almost finished. There's not a speck of rotted wood to be found anywhere in this thing. I've refurbished almost every nook and cranny. Here's my dilemma though: Now that its all legal and on the road I am noticing that when I park on relatively level ground, something doesn't look quite right about this rig! It was hard to notice on my slanted driveway (or perhaps I just blocked it out) but it appears the coach and cab are sort of cockeyed to each other! Has anyone ever experienced this before? I feel like I've seen several pictures of other Toyota motorhomes that had this same thing going on, but most only slightly. But on mine (particularly the passenger side) it seems pretty intense depending on what angle its viewed from. Here's some pics: The interesting thing is that the cab/chassis frame underneath appears to be perfectly straight. It's not like there's a big kink to be seen anywhere. Does anyone have any theories about what's going on here? All I can say is that there's a LOT of weight in the rear of this rig. It was designed so that the generator, air conditioner, water tank and up to three passengers where ALL located BEHIND the the axle. Probably not the best idea. Over the years it seems to have warped the shape of the overall motorhome. It's strange though because there wasn't any water damage to be found in the middle of this rig, only in the rear and a corner of the cabover. All wood in the middle of the coach is rock solid, haven't had to replace any of it. Just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this and knows of a solution or at least a place to start. One more note: Motorhome drives down the road perfectly straight and headlights are okay too. Perhaps a previous owner compensated for the tilt? Also, you are seeing the rig with about 80-90 PSI in the driver's side air bag (to help with genny, AC and full water tank) and probably 40-50 PSI in the passenger side. Thanks so much!!! -Matt
