  1. This sounds like what i heard first time turning on the air on my toyota!I removed blower motor and cleaned out the mouse nest and no more problem.
  2. Drove up to alaska last summer and only saw one toyota on the way up! On the way to homer we met a couple from florida and they had 1991 toyota dolphin v6 with over 200,000 miles on it and been in all the states and most of canada over last few years. Then saw another small toyota several times in the seward and anchorage area! We might make the trip again next summer and spend another summer there with our friends who live in Seward!
  3. Thank you for the info! I will check out both! my friend has 1996 tacoma and it looks like same switch also! could be just different plug on the end but i can swap them out with no problem! Thanks Rick
  4. Hi all! on way home from Alaska trip ect button no longer will lock down in the on position! stopped and cut stick and wedged in the on position and worked all the way home. was wondering if any one knows where i can purchase a replacement switch? searched lots of toyota parts dist. and all say switch has been discontinued! would prefer new one rather than a salvage yard part! thanks Rick
  5. Hi all we made it home from our Alaska trip! Most scenic trip that anyone could ever ask for! Toyota ran great and only had to tighten power steering belt on the way home at Pink Mountain Canada! Best fuel mileage was 18mpg coming across Montana and North Dakota and worst was 11mpg when running into headwinds! We met a couple from Wales who live on a sail boat in Florida in the winter and travel summers in a 1991 toyota dolphin, they have put 80,000 miles on it since they have owned it and have been in 49 states and Canada. They absolutely love it and wish they could take it back to Wales when they go! If you ever get the time the Alaska trip rates up there as one of the ultimate road trips! Back to Florida in Jan. and then start thinking of where we will go next summer! Going to be hard to come up a location for our next trip! Any suggestions would be great! Rick
  6. hi all! made it to Seward Alaska in 8 days taking the rocky mountain route. went through Braniff and jasper park then on to Dawson creek start of the alcan hwy. saw lots of bears, moose, deer, bison and wild horses. best mileage was 16mpg and worst was 11mpg on windy days. traveled almost 4000 miles on our trip up and plan on different route going back in a month or so. weather in Seward has been good we are just in time for blueberries so its been muffins and salmon or halibut for lunch. fishing has been great with some big stringers of halibut, rockfish, cod, yellow eye. I have found out as before how much work it is reeling in fish from 200 feet of water. one of our friends from Montana made some clam chowder and it was excellent! max the dog let's us know when mama brown bear and her 2 cubs is around so we are not surprised at the campfire. scenery has been awesome the whole trip with lots of glaciers and snow capped mountains! well that's all for now! good travels to all! rick
  7. Spent winter in florida in our dolphin and now after being home for 3 months we are packing and doing final checks for our alaska trip! We are taking the rocky mountain route from montana to jasper park then to dawson creek which is the start of the alcan. Plan on being gone until 1st of september and we plan on taking a different route on the return trip. Staying with close friends in seward alaska who own a bed and breakfast in seward. We will be camping on there property and plan on taking in other parts of alaska as well. Looking forward to driving through alberta and britsh columbia it should be awesome trip! Then it will be back to florida for part of the winter months. Rick
  8. Hi! got my toyota v-6 from rydellpowertrain.com and i was very pleased with there service! most engine rebuilders will not warranty engines if you tell them its for a toyota motorhome! rydell had a very good warranty program and were excellent to work with! hope this helps! Rick
  9. Hi! i also have 1989 toyota dolphin and got my rear brakes from napa auto parts! if you are doing rear brakes good time to grease rear wheel bearings and good idea to replace the seals! lots of info on this site about doing this project so just scan through the posts! Rick
  10. Thanks for all the input! v6 dolphin at 55mph turns 2300rpm! at 60mph turns 2500! at 65 turns 2700! I think 4.56:1 gears would help me out at 55mph to 65mph is where most of my driving is at! other thing i've noticed is rear diff.noise which is more evident at higher speeds and after letting off the gas! kind of a harmonic sound like a intermittent low whine! I don't have any idea if 1 ton floaters are quiet or if you are supposed to have some kind of rear end or dual wheel noise! its not very loud but kind of irritating at times! Thanks Rick
  11. Hi all! saw a post talking about 4.56:1 gears and matching speedo drive and was wondering if these are able to be purchased and where? what size is the rear gear housing in a toyota 1 ton full floater axle? thinking of gear change to better use of OD in 1989 v6 dolphin! anything below 60 miles mph in overdrive kicks in and out on slightest grade making it pretty much useless! Thanks Rick
  12. replaced master cyl. and this time looked at parts diagram it shows gasket between master cyl. and brake booster! also found a vacuum hose that was unhooked and was leaking alot of vacuum so maybe this will take care of my brake problem! going to take it on test drive today will see if problem is solved! thanks all!
  13. hi fred! completely removed the proportioning valve last summer before trip to superior! much better braking without it! have drove over 6000 miles before this problem happened! checked the one way valve on brake booster about hour ago and it seems to be working the way it should! have heard of brake lines heating up near exhaust manifold on the v6 but most the problem occurs when there is moisture in the lines and when it heats up it expands causing brakes to drag! thanks for the reply! Rick
  14. I have checked the rotors after they locked and both are locking at the same time! motorhome is 1989 dolphin v6 with 65000 miles on it! did wheel bearings and checked rotors and pads before the trip and pads looked as if they had been replaced recently rotors looked almost new! also bled and flushed brake fluid after removing proportioning valve in the rear! brake rod from pedal to master cyl. seems to have right amount of free play! outside appearance of brake lines look good but that doesn't mean there good inside! leaning toward trying new master cyl.and see what happens! need too get it dialed in before Alaska trip in june! thanks
  15. hi everyone! replaced master cylinder on a trip last summer and haven't had any problems until coming home from wintering in florida! about 20 miles from my home in south central wisconsin i stopped to see my daughter and when pulling up to stop sign my brake pedal became hard and front brakes started dragging! made it to her house a block away and came back out and checked them and they had released, drove on home with them still acting like they wanted to lock again! any ideas what could be causing this? master cyl. i purchased last summer is under warranty so i picked up another one today to try! thanks
  16. Hi!I have also been looking for a mattress for my dolphin!I came upon this website www.ilovemymattress.com.They have several kinds and will build it to your specs. They are kind of expensive but hopefully we should not have to ever buy another!Hope this helps!Rick
  17. Hi Charlie! here's the details! the name of the company and website is rydellpowertrain.com located in Waterloo Iowa. the person i spoke with was Shawn in parts dept. he was very good to deal with and if i had any questions or problems they also have great tech department! on there web site watch the video from MotorHead Garage which is a tv program. I decided to go with the gold no fault warranty 3 year unlimited warranty for $150.00 because you get the part package along with the warranty! part package has new oil pump water pump radiator hoses timing belts radiator cap spark plugs and plug wires and cap and rotor all the gaskets new air filter! that's quite a bunch of parts that's included! they will ship engine to your door or to your mechanics shop! engine came in brand new storage pod which made unloading easy! there is $400.00 you pay but once your engine is in and running call them they will have tucking company pick it up and send you a check for $400.00 The engine i purchased looked like it was new! called them several times with all kinds of questions whether it was tech or general and was always pleased with prompt response time! Engine removal and replacement is not a easy deal! Takes a lot of time so many wires and lines! Had shop do it and they pulled trans with the motor so i had them put new filter and gasket in transmission before putting it all back in! $1000.00 for labor on install plus oil antifreeze trans fluid! I think that was a deal after watching them do it and time it took! They also show the toyota 4 cylinder engines and also rebuilt transmissions on website! When i bought my engine they did dicker on price so you will have to make your on deal! Hope this helps. i am very satisfied so far with lots more power! big difference! Rick
  18. hi all! updated my 3vze with remanufactured engine! cant believe how much more power it has over the old one! been driving it around to put some miles on it before summer trips. engine came with 3 year unlimited warranty and if it breaks they pay for towing and rental car until its fixed! most companies i spoke with would not warranty there engines because it was being put in motorhome! also got deer damage to front all fixed with new grill-bumper-headlights-lower spoiler and air conditioner condenser. finishing up storage compartment so i can carry 2 propane tanks in same compartment that only carried one before! got some minor water damage in bunk area to repair then its on to rear hitch mounted storage rack and storage box! other projects to take care of its going to take some time! thanks for all the great tips from other members! Rick
  19. hi all!i was wondering if anyone has replaced there seat covers?where is best place to buy for best quality-fit- price?also has anyone found custom mattress that will fit overhead bunk area?found one company but you had to buy mattress and box spring as a set!this is buy far best toy site!thanks Rick
  20. I have 1989 dolphin and im planning alaska trip in the near future!it does not have onboard gen. so compartment is empty!moeller marine permanent mount below deck fuel tanks sold by cabelas have two sizes that will fit this compartment! one is a twelve gallon the other is thirteen!tank has three openings fuel fill -fuel vent- fuel line out!was thing of installing electric self prime fuel transfer pump and linking this tank to main tank!these tanks sell for little over $200.oo!thought it would be good way to increase fuel capacity!any suggestions would be great!thanks Rick
  21. hi! tail pipe on my dolphin looks really tiny and was wondering if there is any benefit in replacing the original muffler with hi flow muffler and getting rid of tiny tail pipe and having a larger tail pipe bent and installed? my mechanic who worked for Toyota dealership said they used to do it and brought tail pipe out in front of the rear wheels! any increase in power or fuel mileage what do you think? thanks rick
  22. thanks bunneys. thats what it looks like! now i know its factory and not something else! sure is great to have so many people who know so much about these motorhomes! now just have to figure out how to get some better rear brakes! does your rear brakes seem to work ok? have to try to adjust mine after reading about valve in the rear! thanks agin Rick
  23. thanks for reply! never looked under in toyota rvs so i have nothing to compare this to! i just thought it looked like it wasnt standard equipment! as far as height of the rear of the rv it looks perfect but didnt know if it would cause any problems in the future! rear brakes do not seem to be working very well but this was covered in another post so will try to adjust per posting information! reason i found out rear brakes were working poorly is the day i bought it i hit a very very large whitetail deer 7 miles from home! deer 1 toyota 0 ! deer is still running toyota has $2600 dollars of front end damage! if they total it out i will have lots of toyota parts for sale! kinda really stinks after so much looking at for sale ads all over my part of the country! finally find decent one now might have to start looking agin! thanks agin Rick
  24. looked under dolphin i just purchased noticed it had air bags at one time! noticed that at rear of spring looked as if someone had welded blocks to frame and then mounted the spring attachment bracket! is this normal or did they do this to raise rear of rv to get away from airbags? if so how safe is this setup? thanks
