  1. our 76 chinook is currently on a cross country trip!

  2. For many months I have wanted to complete my little interior remodel project of our 76 Toyota Chinook. However my progress was headed time and time again because I was vexed by severe leaks that I could not locate.. Not to mention the drudgery of pulling out all the rotten parts. Finally, I found the little screws around the bottom edge of the pop top. These little screws were so rusty that they caused huge holes to form in the bottom and instead of draining out the sides of the rim the water poured into the interior. I used some clear, all purpose silicone sealant and squirted it in the holes around screws and on top of each screw. Finally my leaks are sealed and I am one major step closer to the fun part of my project, the remodel.
  3. Hello All, The vinyl has come off the bottom rim of the pop top. I've tried using flat head screw drivers to sort of 'shoe horn' it back on but it the seam isn't holding it to the metal lip. Anyone know a trick to get it back on? Should I post a pic to illustrate the problem further? thanks!!
  4. Lee & Joan thanks for the quick reply and your advice! Sorry for the beginner questions, I have the Chilton's guide and I downloaded the owner's manual but still confused. Does the aux battery drain the regular battery? Previous to the truck dieing there was a red indicator light the dashboard that said 'CHG' when the truck was idling is this the indicator for the alternator?
  5. I we bought a 76 Chinook in January. We haven't driven it much yet, maybe 20 miles a week. For the last few days it was stalling every time it didn't move. Yesterday it stalled and died while moving. I tried jump starting it but there was nothing, the battery didn't turn over and there wasn't any sound from the starter, or any sound at all. I have the Chilton's guide for it but I'm super confused..about the two battery thing....the 20R engine I can't even find the engine oil dip stick.. maybe I drove it wrong? Maybe there is a kill switch I don't know about? I know this seems like a novice question, how do I get it started so I don't have to tow it? I can't seem to find the owner's manual pdf that I've seen mentioned on here. The Chilton's guide doesn't cover stuff like having two batteries! ): my Chinook

    76 Chinook Project

We bought our Chinook on Friday January 21st 2011, the goal is to go camping in April. The Chinook is really hip, its as if we got it from a 1976 time capsule. So while we're remodeling it we're gonna try to save as much as we can but.... lots of parts of the camper are disintegrating from age.
  7. I was looking at this one not long ago. Good luck with your sprucing up. Peace Hippinikster

  8. We just bought a 76 Chinook!

Congratulations! I have a '76 also. Got it last May and had a blast with it all summer. (current project is replacing the front seats with Cadillac seats to help with the deadened rear-ends often found on long hauls :)
