  1. That's not gonna solve a thing, but should be replaced if old anyway. If your belts are intact and fan turns on already then replacing worn parts in that department won't make you run cooler.
  2. Why is slowing down not an option? Stop worrying about everyone else and drive 55. 5mph is negligible and costing you valuable mpgs. Plus it's putting unnecessary stress on your rig. THINK! When these were built highway/interstate speed limits were 55!
  3. Is it the original water pump? How often was that coolant flushed? My guess is that the blades on the pump may have broken and the pump can no longer provide sufficient cooling at higher temps. Those pumps aren't that tough to switch out. I would strongly consider it if your coolant was rarely flushed and it is the original pump.
  4. Realized I never explained that the new ones I ordered are Chinese and are sold on ebay. Rest assured they're great. LLC and many other professional engine rebuilders use the same exact ones. Feel free to call them and ask. That's what I did. My engine had 128,000 miles on it when I put the new head on. The previous owner never flushed the coolant and that led to pitting and corrosion of the aluminum head. Eventually from constant flow the aluminum eroded the passages all the way to the combustion chamber. I suspected headgasket failure, but it turned out to be the head.   5. The new ones with new valves, seals, guides, cam, and gasket set are tried, tested, and only 400 shipped. A cross country trip and 10,000 plus miles say it all.
  6. Go look at some nearby and then decide if it would work out or not. And definitely bring the lady along when shopping. I would strongly recommend the layout with the bathroom taking up the entire rear portion. It usually eliminates the dinette, but will make life with 4 a bit easier. Just get a fold-able picnic table. Many other models cram too much in and with more than 1 person can feel way too cumbersome.
  7. I'm turning 30 in a few weeks and have been full-timing on and off for the last 3 years and love it! Life is great! Nothing like driving off at a seconds notice and not worrying that you left something behind. I've woken up on isolated beaches with epic surf, beautiful mountain peaks with fresh powder, a minute walk from an archaeological dig I was working on, wide open untouched desert, and many other types of pristine landscapes. One of the few things I know I'll never regret is minimizing, packing everything up, and heading west in my toy home.
  8. Bought one and spent wayyyyyyyyy too much money on it only to throw it out. Not only was it damn near impossible to wedge in some of the areas, but it kept falling out in others. Ended up using a black type of silicone caulking that can withstand extreme temperature fluctuations. Honestly it looks perfect and you would never guess it's caulked even if you were close up (I'm no pro with a caulking gun). In my opinion it is superior to the gasket and muchhhh cheaper. Believe I spent $36 on the gasket and the caulking was $5. 1 year later and no leaks and the seal along the window should outlive the camper.
  9. Love my layout in the Sunland. With the exception of the bathroom sink that's pointless. In the process of ripping it out and putting in a storage rack.
  10. No offense taken, but I'm confident mine is sludge free. I've ran it for 400 miles on fresh oil and afterwards it still looked very clean.
  11. Mine takes 3.7. Linda, are you confusing his 22re with your 6 cylinder? Just add 3.5 and then use your dipstick to check the level as you slowly add more.
  12. 29M I work and hotel it in the Coachella Valley area during the week, but continue my full-timer lifestyle on the weekends and weeks off. It works out since my employer allows me to leave the rig in the company lot while I'm in the field with the company truck.   13. He said mpg went down to 10 on the highway when hauling. I get 12-16 depending on the terrain not hauling.
  14. There was as specific year geo made a metro that weighed 1600. Mine pulled one from Florida to Colorado with the previous owner on numerous occasions. As for wear and tear, I'm at 138,xxx miles and wouldn't hesitate to drive anywhere. My rig is solid and has plenty of power. Trust me, I just had a chance to drive someone elses. When properly maintained you can't bust these 22re engines. Warining: I would retorque those headbolts and check valve clearances before attempting.
  15. The previous owner of my rig installed a larger 3 row radiator vs the stock 2 row. INever once saw it ever hit above half! And I've had her up that hill on I-10 heading east out of the Coachella Valley.

  17. Thought they adjusted on there own by driving 5-10mph in reverse and hitting the brake hard. If you just did a brake job it can take 10-15 times from what I've read online. Good luck
  18. Shaggy, couldn't you just make your own gasket? Although, I wasn't aware of this gasket's existence. Thanks guys! Looks very simple after reviewing Waiter's pics. However, I do have one more question. Should I deglaze the drums since I'm installing new shoes? If so what grit sand paper or tool do you recommend?
  19. Before I dive into this project I wanted to seek advice from members that have succeeded with the task. I recently purchased all National bearings and seals, plus purchased a set of new factory Toyota brake shoes. Now it's time to do the job, except my factory Toyota manual doesn't have instructions for the dually. Bummer. So my questions are will I need any special tools? And are there any disastrous situations I can avoid by simply receiving correct instruction (ex. the hidden oil covered bolt when pulling the head)? Thanks
  20. I'm in Oceanside on most weekends and can give you a rundown if you're ever in the area. Sundays are best for me. I can meet you somewhere like the beach, or I camp on Saturdays a lot near San Clemente and surf in that area. I'm always willing to spend an hour or two chatting about campers. Also, I somewhat full-time in mine when I'm not in the field working during the week(s). Therefore, it'll give you a good perspective on how some of us mange to pull it off.   21. I've always ran 60 front and 60 rear. Never had a blowout after 9,000 miles of use, including a cross country trip. Drives like a dream.
  22. Well I'm sooooooo happy to be back to my old ways of full-timing. Just flew back and drove my 4 cylinder auto to Oceanside, CA from Jacksonville, FL. I'll be full-timing with the exception of several day a week hotel stays that my company takes care of while I'm working in the field. It feels so good to have the camper back in my life. The poor thing just sat in storage for the last year. Good thing I used quality fuel stabilizer! New tires, belts, and an oil change and she was ready to be back in action. Made it the whole way without a problem. Plus my harbor freight solar set-up proved to be more than sufficient in the winter for all my electrical needs. And to think I almost sold her numerous times to so many time wasting cheapskate jerks. For the price I was amost giving it away. You all missed out on one heck of a camper. P.S. The 12v electric blankets that only draw 5 amps are the best. Picked mine up at a Flying J. Ran my battery down only about 1/3 each night.
