Most of the camping took place in state parks or recreational areas which is still my favorite way to overnight in the RV; prices and amenities are good, surroundings are beautiful, and I've just had a lot of good experiences over the years, across the nation. KOAs are often very nice, obviously, but usually out of my price range! I do like some of the mom-and-pop campgrounds, but they are a bit hit-and-miss, unless you have some solid, firsthand experience to trust (things can get weird, especially if they are places with long-term, full-time folks living there!). I have done the Walmart lot and truck-stop thing too, in the past, but that's a needs-must-only option for me...

Favorite campgrounds on this trip were Whitten Park Campground in Fulton, MS (right on the water's edge!) and Reed Bingham State Park in Adel, GA. Favorite attraction was Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, FL, due to some amazing trails and gorgeous swamps!

I didn't spend a lot of time taking photos, but here are a few, miscellaneous:

(Included this ^ last one from the S&H Quick Stop in Imboden, Arkansas because a) it's a legit, historic service station—you just don't see these kinds of pumps in action much anymore! and b) yeah... my gas cap is still sitting on top of that thing, far as I know. Sigh.)

We purchased a '90 Warrior back in September after looking for a time. This one is much like everyone else's, properly cared for and maintained/stored/loved/damaged/fixed/driven/old/awesome!

When we purchased, the seller stated that it had 4 new tires on it, which it did, but there were trailer tires on the front...and they were not "new". So I replaced all six and spared the best of the worst. The 4 gallon water heater was disconnected because it leaked, (disclosed), so I replaced it with an new 6 gallon electronic ignition unit, (but hadn't delved deep enough into this forum to learn about by-pass valves, more on that later...). The furnace stopped working after a couple of weeks into our ownership, but a simple switch-out of the thermostat solved that problem. It has no genny, (disclosed), but it is wired for one. One plus is the cargo rack on the back. The signal lights at the rear right started acting up, it turned out to be the ground rivets inside the light assembly, they had rusted...aluminum bridge, but steel rivets! I bypassed them and they work fine. No cab A/C, (disclosed) but the coach A/C works well. No cruise control, (disclosed). No leaks!!! Every seam is gooped and actually so gooped that it looks a bit unsightly...but high and dry! There is a bit of funk around the cab-over and some repaired water damage to driver side loft, but dry. No rust. Pretty good shape! one cracked window above the driver/front...but no leak.

We took a two nighter "maiden voyage" three hours away to an RV park on the southern shore of Lake Superior and all systems were go. I even tried the shower with the new water heater. The truck ran great, comfortable to drive. The coach was comfortable. I did break a gray water tank valve handle...brittle plastic, replaced with metal variety. On that trip, she turned 100,000 miles, so I changed the oil and flushed the tranny in preparation for the reason for our excited anxiety!

We're in northern Minnesota, so the ToyMoHo has been winterized with 8...yes, count them...8 gallons of RV antifreeze, (no water heater bypass, thank you very much) and I have her covered with a big tarp and have an electric heater keeping it mild in the interior. A temporary winterization...as we're planning to pack her up and head south on December 15th.

Our plan is to head down to Florida and see my folks who are in their late eighties, then head down to the Everglades and Keys, before heading West to eventually take us out to the central coast of California. We have Family, Friends and Framily all along the way. All told it will be a 3 month tour and nearly 7,000 miles. We'll have to dump all of that antifreeze once below the Mason -Dixon line!

As I mentioned, we're super excited to feel the freedom you all have been chatting about, but I'm not gonna lie, I get that "Grand Ma" is old, brittle, delicate and did I mention old! I do have some anxiety about the trip. But hey, my Tacoma has 366K miles on it and the Rav4 is at 234K! I feel confident about the Toyota.

Long drive compounded by low speed definitely means any future trips will need to be MUCH better planned!

Nonetheless she got me there and home!

Unfortunately, heading out of the park and down the main park entry road on our way home, a loud crash was heard overhead, then a few pieces of debris rained down on the hood. The large 59x12" cabover window is gone, as you can see—most of the glass ended up inside the window curtain and on the mattress. Not sure if a falling branch struck the window or if a large bird impacted or what - ?! We drove home just fine but kept it under 55mph. First time that's happened to us in our eight years of ownership.  

So the question is whether to try and replace the glass... or to block off that unlucky window opening completely. The large rubber window seal is in pretty good shape, it appears, but I know these Class C cabover windows tend to be problematic, even from the factory. I'm reading through the forum posts on the subject, but feel free to chime in here if you have any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks!

Towed a trailor with the Yamaha Tw200 on it and have sinced picked up a Kawasaki KLR650.

Planning to head up I75 to check out the Smokies and some of the great motorcyle rides there.

Leaving on the 22nd and wanting to hit the area on Monday so that I do not have to compete with the weekend warriors at Deals Gap.

Just put new tires on the 91 and ckecked all the fluids.

It should be interesting taking the Toyhome through  the mountains with a trailor with two motorcycles on it.

So far on my trip the RV has got as alway 10 mpg no matter what.

The KLR gets 45 mpg.

I have not posted here for a few years but am doing so given the fact that I know many of you possess the knowledge pertaining to my specific situational anxieties.

I am going to be driving my 1981 22r 20ft 4-speed (L45) with 15X,XXX (odo stopped working years ago) Odyessy on not enough leaves but Rite-ride Airbags no compressor, upgraded 4-runner master cylinder, factory (too small) calipers/rotors, from Long Beach to Humboldt where my friend has some land.

My rv runs greats, I've had her for almost 10 years and she got me through University up in Santa Cruz. I have driven her up to Santa Cruz probably 25 times up and back from Long Beach and never had a failure besides a mechanic not reattaching my brake line (I rather do my own work if possible) and losing hydraulic brake pressure.

This being said.......

I know all the different passes, ranges etc, that are necessary to traverse to get to SC or back. I once, in hopes of an initial attempt to get to true Norcal had to traverse Mt. Tamalpais because PCH was closed due to a landslide. Upon the descent of about 25 hairpins and extreme engine braking, I noticed and significant loss of brake power and the smell of burning gear oil.

Turns out my rear drums got so hot they melted my axle seal (outer if I remember correctly) and the secondary seal also failed resulting in my brake shoes being coated in oil and the drums not functioning. Year and years later, about a year ago, I noticed they failed once more, where I was parked and it looked as if the seals burst with force (maybe I should check the breather on the axle housing for blockage). So after this, I have only driven a few 40-mile trips at a time up and down the SoCal coast.

...Anyway this was to try to elaborate my anxiety and concern for this trip.

My friend who lives up in Humboldt and has a bunch of old 22re 4x4s and a few chinooks, advised me to take the 5 the whole way from Santa Cruz. I like this idea but we are in an extreme heat wave here where inland towns that the 5 passes through are hitting 115 and are 93 degrees at 3 am. Maybe this was more of an anxiety vent but any advice from those who have climbing/descending, mountain pass or experience traveling this route would be greatly appreciated.

We stayed in a few different campgrounds during the week, including "Cherry Creek State Park," which is definitely a unique spot: Cherry Creek is a couple square miles of woodsy and wild-ish space, basically right inside the Denver metro area. The park features tons of wide, smooth bike paths, which was great fun since we brought our e-bikes along on the rear rack. The campground area was beautiful and extremely clean, although I was a bit frustrated to find out that, even after paying the campsite fee + the daily vehicle fee, you still can't take a shower in the bathhouse unless you bring a credit card and pay that fee, too! That just ain't right. But I made-do with the onboard shower, which is a tight fit, in terms of height, but doable.

The Warrior held up very well, with no breakdowns and only a few minor issues: the coach water pump stopped working at one point due to a stuck pressure switch, which was a simple fix. More concerning, the 3.Slow began idling a little rough, once we got over 5,000 feet (this also happened when we did a trip to Santa Fe, NM, few years ago). I swapped out the air and fuel filters one evening at the campsite, which seemed to help matters a bit. But once we came back down in elevation, driving east through Kansas, the rough idle smoothed out and never returned. I did however notice a new, pronounced "tick" during the last few hours of our return drive, which I have since diagnosed and narrowed down to a noisy injector—pretty common occurrence in the 3VZE, apparently. I'm shooting some Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant in the fuel tank to see if it'll quiet things down. Overall fuel mileage for the trip was 12.7mpg, with two adults, two folding e-bikes, 65lbs of dogs, and quite a bit of gear + food.

Speaking of Kansas, they have some excellent highways that were a pleasure to drive. I-70 in that state was in terrific condition and, man, I harp on this every time, but it DOES make a huge difference! Preaching to the choir, I know, but road surface and tailwind-vs-headwind become all-important when you're driving a 30+ years, overloaded, little pickup on a long roadtrip. (Surprisingly, we came across some really rough pavement in Colorado, especially on the interstates, which I did not expect.) I know that not everyone loves the unending flatness of central Kansas, but I think The Plains have a pretty special feel about them. We enjoyed traveling through that area and spending a night on the lakeshore at Wilson State Park.

Overall, a very good, successful trip but just not enough free time to do what we'd like to do: cruise more back-roads, stop at small town museums and attractions, see more wildlife, etc. Retirement's still a long ways off, but maybe we'll make it back out there again someday, with more time to kill.

The Warrior ran great and averaged just a hair over 13mpg, which is as good as I've learned to expect. Always nice to have a vehicle that can maneuver around small towns safely and easily on trips like these! On the downside, there are some roads that still just hammer the front end with a vengeance (looking at you, Arkansas!), despite my rebuilding/replacing most of those components. I'm still considering swapping out the 30 year-old torsion bars for new, but am on the fence a bit due to cost/benefit concerns (anybody done that yet with the sway-a-way® option and have a good report?).
