jerlwe
So I knew my gas tank wasn't the original when I bought the rv and I planned on the possibility of buying a new one in the future. Well I put my dolphin up on the lift, measured it, and nearly fell over. My big reason for thinking about a new tank was ground clearance, as this is the lowest point of my vehicle at 6" when empty. - What's the lowest point on your rv and what is it? - Who wants to guess how big my tank is? - Maybe I should get some airbags? Thanks, Jeff tanka.bmp Edited October 19, 2014 by Derek up North
linda s
Well it certainly doesn't look like a Toyota tank but it could be one of the 26 gallon tanks that were available on some Toyota motorhomes. So when it's on empty how much gas does it take. Nice to have a bigger tank. Yes get some air bags Linda S
jerlwe
I measure it and it comes out to 54x12.5x12.5 = 36.5 gallons (If my math is correct.) I will never know how it does on empty, because the risk of getting some gunk in my system is not worth it to me. Thanks for you reply, Linda. Do you by chance happen to know what your lowest point of clearance is on your vehicle? Does 6" sound excessively low?
Derek up North
36.5 gallons would be correct IF you were able to fill every cubic inch of the tank. This is never going to happen in practice for your tank or any other. But I think that in practice you can probably count on at least 30 gallons of useable capacity. Do you by chance happen to know what your lowest point of clearance is on your vehicle? Does 6" sound excessively low? Go look at your rear lower shock mounts. Mine are 6 inches off the ground. If your tank is lower I would think that would be a problem but if the same not as much. It is a much wider area though in case something is on the road. Wonder where that tank came from Linda S
linda s
The depth of the tank is the important measurement and yours is almost exactly the same as the stock tank. Stock tank is 12.38 inches. Yours is just way longer. I think your good. Linda S
Derek up North
It'll all depend on how tightly they've tucked the tank up against the floor. The stock tank might well be 12.38" high, but it's top is contoured, presumably to give clearance for something. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/wcsstore/CVWEB/staticproductimage//1296/large/18320563_spc_TO8B_pri_larg.jpg With all the variables of front and rear suspension height (or lack thereof), a better measurement would be how far the tank hangs below the bottom of the frame rails. jerlwe
Thanks for the usage estimate, Derek! My tank hangs about 1.25in below the floor of the rv. So, from cab to bottom of the tank it is 13.25in(front) 14in(rear). Bottom of frame rail to bottom of tank 4.875(front). Linda, it is slightly lower than the middle of the bolt on the shock mount, but definitely above the lowest part of the shock mount. It feels handmade, not something I want to hit on any obstructions.
5Toyota
looks to be a welded box tank the edges look welded to me the stock tanks are to my knowledge stamped out in two halfs top and bottem and factory machine welded together. no way that is a stock Toyota tank. jerlwe
Definitely not stock. Sounds like it will work for me, though. I guess my dreams of 2x6ing through the mountains were only dreams.. dang
