Cannot put gas in tank

I have experienced a problem putting gas in my tank on my 22 rec efi 86 winnie on 3 occasions while traveling west. We just returned home after 6400 mile trip to California and back. There were 3 times when attempting to fill gas tank that the gas would back up immediately upon starting to fill. Less than a gallon as though it would only fill up the fill tube and stop. On 2 occasions the only way I could get gas in was to run a garden hose in and fill with a gas can can slowly. That worked and opened it up so I could pump in the rest. I know this is a vent issue and just would like to know what I can do to eliminate this problem. I stopped topping off since I heard that overfilling could allow some gas to enter the vent holes near the filling hole. Any suggestions on this?

The vehicle performed very nicely crossing the country once I corrected the minor problems discovered on the way. We got 15.9 mpg on the last fill up and we enjoyed this trip very much. Again we thank all of you in the forum for your input and valuable assistance during our travel.

When your home, crawl under you rig and check the vent line. Over time they develop a bit of a sag. When this happens and you top off the tank fuel gets in the vent line and stays there. If you route the vent line so that it is uphill all the way with no low spots it will self drain and stay open for fill ups.

It's campergal here. I have a similar problem. I have a 1988 toyota dolphin and the outside of the fill line is quite rusty and missing one of it's screws to hold it in place. I just came home from a trip out of state and went to a gas station. It is absolutely on fumes, just about out of gas and they could not get any gas in. He even stuck his finger down to the metal stop and pushed it open but the gas would not go down. I'll look into the vent pipe, also check the fill pipe (since the exhaust system was completely rusted out) but what to do about the rusted part you put the gas cap on? Any help would be appreciated! I am afraid to drive it to a mechanic for fear of running out of fumes and then being stranded with no way to get gas into it. Thanks!

I have exactly the same problems at times with my "88 Escaper. WME has it right. If you top off the tank, fuel gets into the vent hose and you will have a heck of a time getting anything into it. I crawl under the RV and lift up on the vent hose to drain the gas out of it. After I do that, it vents properly and have no problem getting the fuel in. I tried using zip ties and thought I had the problem solved but on vacation it happened again. Time to redo my emergency fix.

funny, i reported this same issue and some of the same folks told me to check for some kind of valve, however I agree with Bob C. In my case the fuel pressure was too great and it backed up the vent line full and vapor locked it. at that point you are screwed and have to go under and clear vent line. in my rv i noticed this must have been a problem enough that the former owner put a bleeder in to release the vent, now i just do that. I don't think the topping off can cause this so much as pushing too much fuel too fast. Probably means the filter is so old its clogged on the input but man I dont want to deal with that until the pump dies...lol

I have the same on the 86 Dolphin. Still low on the priority list. Takes longer to fuel. I've heard that there is a vent on the charcoal canister that gets plugged by bugs and such. Seems to be an easy fix. No, I haven't located the charcoal canister yet. By the gas tank I'd guess. There's also a on-board recover ORVR valve that could get stuck.

Gas pump nozzles shut off when they sense X amount of back-pressure. The venturi in the pump-nozzle is supposed to sense liquid but some will shut off with back-air-flow from the tank. That can be caused by a faulty fill pump nozzle OR a bad vent in the gas-filler-neck going to the tank. Diesel trucks have even more of a problem because diesel fuel foams so much when agitated. My 1988 Minicruiser had the problem when the rubber vent hose that runs along the filler neck had a kink in it.
