jjrbus
I am doing a websearch of trouble shooting failed speedometer, without testing it yet it appears that the VSS is kaput. CEL is on, no cruise control and no odometer, also speedometer did not just quit but died over time. I thought I would check price and found extreme price differences from sub $20 to over $300. What is confusing me is different part numbers, there are several and one site will say 4WD and another site will not say anything for same part#. While trying to sort through all this I found the $20 Ebay part and would like input from my esteemed Toyota colleagues on weather it would fit? 93 Toyota 3VZE, automatic. http://Toyota Pickup Previa 83181-35040
Derek up North
No special knowledge, but can someone post the link to an online Toyota Dealer where you can look up parts after entering your VIN. This might lead to the 'truth'.
linda s
Here's the dealer and the page with the part. There is only one model number for your rig and your not going to like the price. Part you listed matched no numbers that I even saw. I had to replace this same part on my Nissan. Almost impossible to find but in the end only cost me 27 bucks Linda S https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/parts-list/1993-toyota-pickup-2-wheel-drive-jpp/meter.html?Filter=(d=USA;1=3VZE;4=STD;5=ATM;6=4HC;7=RCB;8=WT;9=HLF;13=IV6;14=T1
jjrbus
Linda must be psychic to know I would not like the price! This is going to be fun, 3 different transmissions, 4 or 6 cyl, auto and standard, 4 wheel drive, change over year from cable to sensor and 2 vehicle speed sensors and possible mid year model sensor change! Nothing here that would confuse me?
jjrbus
If anyone is interested, I did some searches and found that the VSS is located on the passenger side of the tramsmission. Not on mine it is on the driver side, when I went to pull it there are 2 VSS, it is posted it is the top VSS, it is the one. In the picture it is the one that is unplugged, I would not describe that as the top one? I read it takes a 10mm socket, mine takes a 12mm socket! I tested the part as best I could and am 95% cetain the VSS is bad. Now to shop and find one. Toyota parts site lists 8318135070 as the correct part. This part # is available from other places but does not list this part # as fitting a 93 V6 auto. Clear as mud. Same part # but shows as incompatible http://www.ebay.com/itm/83181-35070-96-07-Isuzu-Vehicross-Toyota-4Runner-Tundra-Tacoma-Speed-Sensor-B840-/140990335687?fits=Make%3AToyota&hash=item20d3adcac7:g:jacAAOxygPtS5PeY&vxp=mtr aaa.htm Edited April 27, 2017 by jjrbus
linda s
As far as compatibility I trust the Toyota parts website more than an eBay seller. Search engine on that site looks exactly like the one you will see on computer at a dealer. Remember when you were looking for a computer and the one for the double wheel chassis was exclusive for only that vehicle. No other Toyota truck used them. That's a darn good deal, for 35 bucks just buy it. Bet it works perfect. Linda S
Maineah
One is for the speedo the other is for the transmission ecu.
jjrbus
Thanks for the input. One of the VSS with the same part number looks slightly different, so I will not go with that one. that is the cheapest one from China. I find it hard to believe after sifting through many speedometer posts that no one else noticed the same part # but different applications. There was one on a Toy forum who was going to order one, but he never reported back. I will watch the threads for another day or so and then order one. linda s
At the bottom of the page of the Toyota parts dealer site I gave you for that item it does list a Sequoia, Tundra, Tacoma as fits for that same part so it is the right one. Weird. It did list them but now it's not there. trust me it was. Linda S
jjrbus
I do trust you Linda! I waited hoping someone else would chime in on this and now will order. I am not going to order the one from China as it is slightly different, but also includes the gear. Buying the China one may be a cheap way to get a new gear?? Note what looks like a clip in the picture which is not on my VSS or on others for sale on the net. Edited April 30, 2017 by jjrbus
linda s
Remove the old one first and see if your gear is broken. That was what was wrong with my Nissan. Chinese one might be just fine Linda S

linda s
Yeah I wasn't stuck paying a big price for the one on my Nissan so going with dealer parts wasn't a problem. Wonder why the Toyota one costs so much. Linda S
jjrbus
The new sensor showed up quickly, not looking good, there is a slot for a clip of some kind cut into it and the mounting tab is too short. I am curious if removing the black plastic part and putting it on old housing might work? I either did not pay enough attention to the pictures or got them mixed up? linda s
too bad. Wonder why it looks so different. Here is a list of vehicles this model was used on. Since there are quite a few of them maybe a local junk yard might have one. You could bring the old one to compare. Hope you can get a refund on that one Linda S https://www.toyodiy.com/parts/xref?s=+83181-35070&mU=on

jjrbus
Seems I have shot myself in the foot on this one, did not pay enough attention to the pictures. The one I ordered looks like the one in the add, so not the wrong one. Did not do due diligence on seller, "no return on electrical items" Happens sometimes when I try to beat the system, at least it was $35 and not much more. I took both apart and the insides are different, so no hope of switching out parts.
jjrbus
New VSS arrived I measured it and looked everything over and looks right, gear from old one fits. Tested as per You tube 3 wire VSS test and looks good. Installed and went for test ride, oh poopies, no speedometer! Will have to start with wiring diagram and see where and how I should find a signal.
linda s
This is a big page. Hope it comes through. Question that doesn't show is speedometer not working but replaced sensor already. This shows how to test. Linda S Posted: 04/24/2012 Options Permalink History RUDY, the part in your transmission was hopefully the Vehicle speed sensor. From what I understand, most of the failure on the Toyota's is actually the instrument cluster itself. Do go ahead and check your connector. That way at least you know that the sensor and the harness are okay.\:" INSPECT VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (a) Connect the positive (+) lead from battery to terminal 1 and negative (–) lead to terminal 2. (b) Connect the positive (+) lead from tester to terminal 3 and negative (–) lead to terminal 2. (c) Revolve shaft. (d) Check that there is voltage change from approx. 0 V to 11 V or more between terminal 3 and 2. HINT: The voltage change should be 4 times per each revolution of the speed sensor shaft. If operation is not as specified, replace the sensor. If that should check out, you know it is not the sensor. then go ahead and check the connector to your instrument cluster or the harness, you can check the instrument cluster using the wiring diagram. If all those points check out okay, I definitely would repair or replace the instrument cluster. Hope this helps, good luck Was this answer helpful? jjrbus
Tanks Linda, I actually have that in my Toy file. I am not confident in my electronic skills but am pretty sure the old VSS was not functioning and the new one is. I have the speedometer out and see no obvious flaws in it. The opp's here could be the new VSS is not putting out the proper signal?
jjrbus
I went back and started over again. I set up my testing much better than last time. The new VSS shows 8.5 volts out put with no pulse, the original VSS shows 12.5 volt output with 4 pulse per revolution just like the you tube video says it should. There is voltage and ground to the VSS plug and the signal wire shows continuity to the A plug. Further inspections shows a burnt trace on the speedometer circuit board. Not sure if this needs to be done by speedometer specialist or any electronics person can do it. The local speedometer guy wants $150 if he can repair it, I do not know if this is reasonable price or not? He will give a 1 year guarantee. This is above my pay grade and will not attempt a repair myself. I am unable to locate a used speedometer locally. Anyone have a used speedometer head? Derek up North
Maybe the newer T100 uses VSS compared to the older SR5. I think it's next to impossible to find an SR5 cluster with auto tranny indicator. T100, much more common with auto.
