V-6 owners, how much have you paid for timing belt and valve adjustment?

Recommended Posts

I've gotten 2 quotes, one I thought was too high {2000} and one I was very happy with {800}.This was to do timing belt, water pump and adjust valves all at the same time.

thanks

I have a 1993 and got the intake gasket and valve adjustment and new plugs for $1422 2 years ago in Albq., NM

Wow, I'm starting to think that guy had to misquote me that told me 800 for everything.

I think 800 is a realistic price (not at a dealership).  BTW, the valves can be adjusted WITHOUT taking off the timing belt.  The service manual says to take it off while doing valve adj.

Parts for timing belt is the belt and possibly idler arms & tensioner.  When I did mine I bought the parts form Rock auto - one idler had a little noise - replace them all while I was in there.

The valves will require rocker arm cover gaskets and the plenum gasket. The spacers too - if a mechanic does these often they may have a set.  If the mechanic quoted without knowing about the spacers I would be concerned about his competence.

He mentioned something about a gasket for the valves, also said included idler arms & tensioner, water pump, and a couple seals, crankshaft seals I think he said. Were not messing with the timing belt just because of the valves, engine has 122,000 miles and I have no record of either ever being done.

He probably meant camshaft seals.  The timing belt comes off for that - ditto for water pump.

Well I dont trust the shop that gave me the low quote on the valve adj after letting them work on it for something else.Called4 shops today specializing in foreign cars like toyota.

! said they dont work on anything older then 96,still waiting to hear back from 1 other one.The 2 that did call me back tried heavily to talk me out of it.One said toyota doesnt carry the shims anymore and if they could do them it would be expensive,he didnt even give me a quote. He said unless its having issues dont worry about it,he had 4 runner with 230,000 miles and never adjusted valves.

Other shop told me basically the same thing, they could do timing belt but would have to send it out to machine shop to do the valve adj that they didnt have proper tools to do it.

Well Toyota does still make the shims. I never usually recommend this but have you tried a dealer. They would already have shims in stock and you might not have to wait for them to get the size they need. Here are shims with part numbers.

I replaced the timing belt on my 1990 3.0 V6 at 76,400 miles. During the process I adjusted the valves, replaced the water pump, idler pulleys, intake gasket , coolant, thermostat, and radiator hoses. All parts were Toyota OEM and were purchased from a local Toyota Dealer. You can buy the tools required to adjust valves for about $40.00 on ebay. I also ordered the SST Toyota tool set for $200.00 but managed with the aftermarket set. Nissan has same type valve adjustment system and the same tools worked for my Nissan Frontier. I found three valves that needed adjustment and had to wait two days for shims from Toyota. The timing belt, water pump, idler pulleys, all looked in good shape. I did find out the old timing belt had stretched a bit and was making some noise. Until that time I thought the noise was coming from transmission. I spent about $500 on parts, but they were all Toyota OEM. My policy is always use genuine Toyota parts if possible, Toyota has such a good reputation primarily because their parts quality. Two weeks later we made a 2600 mile round trip to Dallas, Texas and the only problem was about 10 oz of coolant loss. The radiator cap turned out to be defective and I replaced same. That took care of the problem. Anyway, any mechanic that can't adjust the valves should not be allowed to touch anything else. The special tools are not that high tech. Just a special type of pliers to take tension off the valve spring and a shim removal tool. You will also need a micrometer and know some basic algebra to figure out what size shim is needed to bring your valve(s) back to specs. Valves that are too tight will effect compression  and can burn, and one that is too loose will be noisy. There are lots of things that have to be removed  such as the power steering pump, EGR valve, vacuum lines, just to name a few. It is a lot of work. If something isn't done right the first time, having to go back into the engine would be painful. I took about a week and took my time. I set up a patio umbrella to shade the sun. I would not consider doing the same for anyone for less than 1500.00 with the understanding that it could go higher if I found anything out of the ordinary. Like I mentioned previously, the  Toyota Valve Adjust tools didn't arrive until after I finished the job. They are obviously made better than the after market set I used.

I have just purchased a 92 Itasca Spirit, V6 3l. I took it in for a pre purcase 60 point check, which it passed with flying colours! As it is at 106k km it is due for a timing belt change. The mechanic who did the inspection could not find out if it could have had a timing chain rather than a belt. Is this possible? I remember seeing somewhere that 92s with the 4 cyl. had chains, but not the V6s. Is that correct? Thanks in advance!

All 4 cylinders (22R-E) have timing chains. Fitted to motorhomes up to 1988 (older body style). All V6s (3VZ-E) have timing belts. Fitted to motorhomes beginning 1989 (newer body style.

The 22R-E was available in Trucks/4Runners after 1989, but not the 1-Ton C&C used for motorhomes.

I've no idea why the mechanic couldn't find out about the timing chain/belt. Certainly doesn't sound like a Toyota specialist!! I'd suggest you widen your search!! :)
