Broken Down, Bad Engine

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

I haven't been on here for a while. I've been living in my Sunrader the last few months, visiting friends/family and boondocking. Yesterday, I added some oil to my rig and forgot to put the cap back on. After driving a couple hundred miles the engine started to make some pretty terrible noise. Long story short, I had been driving with almost no oil for quite some time. The mechanic here in Green, OR, where I stopped, says the the engine is hosed and quoted me $4500 parts and labor to fix it.

That's a lot of money to put into an old motorhome (more than I paid for it). I figure I have two choices; spend a bunch of cash fixing it, or try to sell it. Obviously I'm not going to get a great price trying to quickly sell a 30+ year old motorhome with a bad engine.

Anyway, I figured I'd post here to see if anyone has some advice. Or simply to tell me that spending $4500 on this rig is nuts.

Thanks!

If they provide the engine they will have responsibly if you do they will not cover even labor so be careful with a used one if you buy it.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm going to have it towed to the place Linda mentioned.

Linda, are you familiar with their work?

I have heard about a Toyota rebuilder in that area who was supposed to be really good. I just don't know if these are the same guys. can't find the thread where it was discussed. Did they give you a price on installation? I certainly would have more faith in a place that did all the work and offered a guarantee. 3 years is a long time. Most places are 1 year or less

http://www.engnbldr.com/ Give these guys a call and explain your situation. They normally don't ship engines, but they may know a shop you can deal with.

Only one review but good one

Cell phones are the way things are done now. If I'm working on an engine what phone am I most likely to hear. The cell in my pocket or the phone in the office. I don't even have a regular phone at home anymore. As far as I can tell their only purpose is to give telemarketers a job. I had to stop answering them years ago

They priced it at $1250 for the engine, $750 to install. Even factoring in the tow, it seems a decent price. I talked to the owner, Ben, he seems like a nice guy. He gave me a ride to the bus station so I could get to Portland before the holidays. Said he doesn't bother with much advertising because he's got enough work. Apparently they've been in business 60+ years, the last 20 or so exclusively working on Toyotas.

Kool, the prices are realistic for a organized shop with all the right tools and knowledge. 2 days MAX. 2 techs with the right stuff 1 full day

I'd call that a super great price, you got lucky people like that are hard to find.  They get enough work word of mouth that they have no need to advertise.   I go to a small local car show and when chatting with the owners ask where they get work done, have not come up with a Toyota specialist yet.

there are no cam bearing in serts in the four cyclinder s . doesn't make much difference in this case now  I am sorry for the loss.  don't know how long the cam would hold.

That sounds like a really great deal Kale. I know we are talking engines here but if you need your transmission rebuilt, you have to send it to them ($75 shipping) total both ways for me, 350 miles away, this place in Portland Oregon did good work for about $1500, http://www.txchange.com/

That included an extra large trans oil cooler kit

The tranny is a bit too rare to just exchange for a rebuilt so they rebuild yours. The local shop took out, shipped and reinstalled, and put in the trans cooler for $550
