Found One! '91 Sunrader 4X4 Diesel From Japan. Considering Buying, Is This A Good Looking Rig?

This camper is within driving distance of my home town, I'm considering purchasing. Can you tell me anything I should know or ask about before I do?

What I know from a brief conversation and seeing it (didn't drive it) in person today:

It's imported from Japan & listed as a 1991 Toyota Hilux Sunrader 4WD Diesel Camper Motorhome. $22,500 Price seems steep, where can I negotiate?

Does anyone have insight on the imported models? If they are very rare, the 4x4 diesel?? Any concerns or things I should ask about the rear axel?
I'm new to this, seems like a great community thanks in advance for any advice. : )

It seems overall pretty well equipped, most of the amenities are original (old) and the inside, although livable, needs some TLC (shower not working, no toilet.) Turned the motor over, it started right up and purred like a good little diesel should.

Nice looking rig. Why would you want to spend $22K on a rig that uses many uncommon parts (in the USA) and will barely have the performance of a four cylinder gas engine. Basically just a little less power then the 22RE gasser. For that you get maybe 18 MPG on a slow highway cruise instead of 14-16 MPG? And if you live somewhere where diesel fuel is a buck more per gallon then gasoline ?? And lets say a diesel part fails - the the rotary-distributor injection pump. You can easily be out of near $2000 pretty quick.

Toyota did not make Hilux cab & chassis trucks with full-floating dually rears. So I kind of wonder what it on this rig? Cannot really tell from the photos.

agree with JD. neat unit but 22K is a LOT of change. for that $, i'd want something with an already-restored interior. you could prolly buy a pretty decent sunrader for 12K and then have 10 left over to play/refurb with and buy fuel.

No you can not buy a 4x4 Sunrader for 12 grand and a diesel upgrade will cost big bucks in this country unless you can source all the parts and engine and install it yourself. My only reservation about this rig other than I could never get used to driving a right hand drive vehicle is that this engine was a Japan engine only. Not like the KZ engine which was used all over the world and lots of parts are available for.

Actually the 3L diesel is just as common as the 1KZ, just a little bit older and not turbocharged. More similar to the 2L-T's that were sold here in the mid eighties. I did a swap for someone using that engine a bunch of years ago. It's probably the most common engine found in 90's hiluxes. Parts aren't that hard to get if you know where to look.
