noobz Posted August 25, 2015 Share Posted August 25, 2015 Hi All, I'm new to the site as a member, but I've been watching from the guest side for quite a while. I finally got impatient and picked up an '82 sunrader that seems to be in decent shape, and at a pretty good price (I think). The catch is that it still has the 5 bolt rear end. If anyone has any leads on where I might be able to find a 6 bolt rear end around British Columbia or Washington state, I would be extremely grateful. And does anyone have any experience with a mechanic in washington state that has done a good job with the swap at a decent price? I'd think about doing the swap myself, but if I'm honest, I've never done a job like that before, and it seems like it might be a little too important to wing it. Welding on new shock mounts and spring perches. You need to start talking to shops near you and finding someone who seems interested in doing the work. Jamie Is your Sunrader an 18 footer or a 21 footer? You might just be better off putting new wheel bearings in your 5-lug rear axle and convert it back to single tires if it has that awful offset dually kit on it. There are heavy Toyota trucks all over Europe with just the single-tire, 5 lug axles in back and they appear to do just fine - even with a 6000 lb. GVRW. Even the ones made after year 2000 are set up that way. Putting single wheels, new wheel bearings, and 8 ply tires will be easier and cheaper then converting to a heavier axle. If you DO convert - using the Dyna/Toyota FF rear allows you to have one spare that fits front and back. That, in my world, is a nice feature to have. I haven't looked lately, but when I was - I was finding complete donor trucks with all the FF dually parts for $500-$1000. Much better deal that way then just buying a rear axle somewhere and then having to find extra wheels, front 6 lug hubs, etc. Back to the 5 lug semi-floater, in Africa, Australia, etc. the 2004 cab & chassis truck has the same axles and bearings as your's and has a 6000 lb. GVWR using single 195R-14C single tires in back. I know a junkyard in northern NY that has a 1983 Sunrader with a FF dually rear and six-lug hubs in front to match, along with seven of the 6-lug wheels. The sad reality is that it seems the 1-Ton C&C was never imported into Canada. AFAIK, U-Haul didn't have them in their fleet. I've seen 1 box truck here in the last 5 years and it was imported from Pa. You don't see landscapers driving around in them. To even see an '80s or '90s pickup still on the road is rare.
