Rlantozzi
So I just bought my first RV and it is a 79 sunrader. It is in desperate need of new shocks. My question is should I just buy normal toyota hilux shocks for the front and rear or does it use a different shock because of the additional weight? Any help would be great. Thanks
Derek up North
You'd do best to buy the heaviest duty shocks you can find. Your $15 'No Names' won't cut it.
linda s
Bilstein's are considered the best but pricey. They didn't make them for the front of the older Toyota's for a while but looks like they have them again http://www.ajusa.com/Bilstein-Monotube-Shock-Absorbers-and-Struts-c2ddev2abeq67a9.html These KYB's are also a very good shock and a little more affordable http://www.justsuspension.com/kyb-gas-a-just-shock-absorber-kg4611a.html front http://www.justsuspension.com/kyb-gas-a-just-shock-absorber-kg5538.html rear These are also the best prices I could find Linda S
stamar
they only have bilsteins for the back http://www.shockwarehouse.com/index.cfm?mode=results&selected_model=4490&selected_year=1979 but they are not the same part as the motorhome shocks they make for 85 and newer, these are 1 ton truck shocks overall your best bet is bilsteins in the back and monomax in the front. edit write down the link linda has to get the bilstein 4600 in the front. most places say the 4600 does not fit the 79 in the front. make sure before you order them
linda s
Yes they make them for the front but you need to search truck not motorhome. There are no 1 ton 1979 Toyota trucks and his rear door 1979 Sunrader is very light compared to most of our motorhomes. He could use the motorhome shock on the back and the truck shock on the front but I don't think it would make a big difference. Here are the same shocks I posted from the other site at shockwarehouse. These just cost more. First listing http://www.shockwarehouse.com/index.cfm?mode=results&selected_model=4489&selected_year=1979 Linda S
stamar
seems to be available. when i had a 79 dolphin there werent 79 bilstein shocks for the front of a 1/2 ton truck. its a totally different design. that was a year ago. try to find someone who has them installed too. but i think that might be good news for the old motorhome owners. linda s
I guess they realized there were too many Toyota nuts out there keeping these trucks alive to not make them. Still no luck for the Chinook guys though cause these only fit back to 79. Linda S
stamar
ohhhh thats what it is. my 79 was on a 78 chassis double check that too make sure your motorhoe is a 79 not a 78. theres a lot of parts different. 78 front shocks are a totally different design. will not use a 4600 bilstein. different technology i cant remember what its called torsion bar or something. the shocks are so tiny its hilarious. 79 sunny
Btw the home door is not rear but to the passengers side door far rear side correct?
linda s
No there are more Sunrader from the seventies with a rear door that can be opened just by the door or the whole back can be lifted like a hatch. This also make an awning when it's opened. Your side rear door is very rare. I've only seen a few of them over the years. 6 or 7 maybe? Linda S There are also quite a few Sunraders from that era set up the same as the newer ones. Door right behind passenger door and rear dinette
