waiter
All the curtains went into the washing machine - We were afraid that they would disintegrate, but after two gentle cycles, they survived and are clean. (muddy water on the first pass) As for the walls and ceiling!!! The Ceiling is cheap paneling that's pre-finished on one side. The walls have a contact paper stuff on them. So, We spent the day washing the walls and ceiling and peeling as much of the loose contact paper as we could. This all prep for recovering. CONTACT PAPER - We tried the contact paper on the ceiling and the walls, BUT!! The stuff now days doesn't stick worth a darn. We come to the conclusion that if it says; "Easily re positionable", that's a key word for "It doesn't stick worth a darn". HINT to Contact paper company - Make a product that sticks and cannot be re-positioned. put a warning label on it that says "You better get it right the first time, because this stuff is never coming off". THEN YOU'LL SELL YOUR PRODUCT We then tried wallpaper - Forget it. to much prep work Finally, After a couple weeks of experimenting, we decided just to paint After describing the problem to the paint person, She recommended paint everything first with a "Zinsser 1-2-3 primer". This will stick to the glossy ceiling paneling and also the walls that are partial contact paper, as log as they are reasonably clean and free of grease/oils. After that dries, paint with good quality ceiling and wall paints. So, Last night I took down all the light fixtures and ceiling vents and anything else that shouldn't get painted and put on the primer. I started at the back and am working my way forward. Still need to take down all the curtain rods and slides. I left the corner molding in place(the round vinyl stuff that's almost everywhere). I plan on cutting it off with a razor knife, so I wasn't concerned about getting paint on it. When I'm finished painting, I'll cut the round stuff off and then run a bead of dark brown or white caulking in all the corners, kind of like what they do in and around the pocket door. I'll post photos as I finish up. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto Edited January 2, 2011 by waiter
waiter
A couple pictures: 1) The primer covers the wallpaper, ceiling, and the areas were the wallpaper was pulled off. Remove any wallpaper that is not sticking. 2) I'll use a razor knife and cut off the vinyl trim, then re-trim with a bead of dark brown or white caulk. 3) looking rearward, ceiling, bath area, and most of kitchen are primed, (also pocket door and bath closet door. Did not do closet or shower. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
Derek up North
Is there not going to be a difference in texture on the walls where the wallpaper has and hasn't been pulled off?
waiter
The Zinsser 1-2-3 seems to level a little, The big concern was the transition line between wallpaper and no paper, None problem. I'll keep you posted, we'll probably paint the bath today. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
bajadulce
looks cleaner that's for sure. fun stuff.
waiter
Finished painting the ceiling bath and kitchen area. (Still need to do the trim caulking) Looks very good We used Satin for the ceiling and semi-gloss for the walls. A good quality paint (Lowes Valspar) and a texture roller. The texture came out nice and did a good job of hiding the wallpaper and transition bumps. On a scale of 1 - 10 : Before = 3, After = 8 After we finished, I would consider possible using a light gray for the walls, might match the counter tops carpet, etc. I still need to do above the couch, table and the cabover. waiter
Paint looks very good, still need to do the trim. The entire ceiling is done, but I'm working my way forward on the walls, Need to do over the couch over the table, and over the cabover. I forgot to mention this.. On the ceiling, there were a couple spots around the vents that were stained from leaks. The Zinsser 1-2-3 did not cover this and the stains bleed through. I got a small can of "Kilz-it" and put two light coats of this over the stains. It covered the stains and they did not bleed through. In the "If I had to do it over again" catagory, I would paint over the stains first with Kilz-it, then when that dried, paint the entire ceiling with the Zinsser 1-2-3. Derek up North
I've used Kilz before with excellent results covering water stain on drywall. Not sure if there would be any benefit to covering it with another primer before paint.
krilov
Oh man, it's really starting to come together! Can't wait to see it when your done. waiter
My wife is really getting into this. When I first pulled it into the driveway 4 weeks ago, I thought she was going to cry. After a couple weeks of cleaning and doing the little homey things, she's now talking to all her friends about this cute little motor home she has. She came home yesterday with a neat digital clock tha also displays Outside Air Temperature. She says; "Your not putting that original clock back up, See if this one will work". I'll get a photo of it after I get it put up. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto

Derek up North
I came across pictures of another Toyota with the inside repainted. A tidier job on the drawer sides wouldn't hurt. http://groups.yahoo....276176/pic/list I'm not quite sure what's being done in the over-cab area. Converted to storage, I'd guess. bajadulce
@ Labor of love link: Seems way too much structure and unnecessary bulky plywood. Nice craftmanship and kudos to the guy rebuilding the camper, but could use more modern lightweight construction materials/techniques. Love the goodtimes link Nice deco. Greg here is a little more tolerant of me I suppose. Oh well tis a shame. I love checking out wacky stuff ppl do when the creative bug bites them. Wood stove? classic. Derek up North
Yes, I remember the 'Blue Pill' incident. If I can figure out how you guys post pictures, I'll do so. Do I have to put it into something like PhotoBucket first?
waiter
This forum limits the size of your JPG. You need to shrink / compress it. The JPGs I attach are around 30k each. The originals are 2 meg and are WAY TO BIG to be uploaded. I use a program called "Advanced JPG Compressor" to take those large, high resolution, megabyte size files, and shrink/compress them down to a small size that is easily displayed on we browsers. This is the key - If you want a high resolution version of any of my photographs, let me know and I'll e-mail it to you, Advanced JPG Compressor is a for sale program, but I'm sure there may be programs out there that do basically the same thing for free. Derek up North
I never bother trying to upload large files. I'm on sloooow dial-up!! I've loaded the 4 photos Bajadulce can't see (Bad Boy) into Photobucket. Plus a 5th, just for fun! http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd196/DerexPix/Toyota%20MH%20Remodels/
bajadulce
Nice I approve of the wood burning stove! Who cares how much it weighs. I'd hang out in that camper for sure! What's that little blue mini camper? Interesting. As for uploading pics, there are a lot of image uploading sites such as imageshak that are free to upload. Photobucket works great as well. Whats nice about those sites is, as waiter describes, they usually compress your images as well. Waiting for huge resolution pics to display on screen can be really frustrating AND is quite taxing to the forums storage when those are "uploads". The eye can't tell that much difference between compressed images anyway. A 1600x1600 picture of a bolt doesn't make any sense. Usually there are "tags" with images when you upload them to image sites. You can use those tags to display on the forum using the img bbcode [*img]link[*/img] *without asterisks Like the image of the wood burning stove: I've never used photobucket, but I see an "img" code window on the site you linked to (right side) you just click on the window and it automatically copies the code to your clipboard which is a nice feature. Then just paste in the browser here: code for pic above looks like: [*img]http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd196/DerexPix/Toyota%20MH%20Remodels/Woodstove.jpg[*/img]
Maineah
Wow Derek how do you find that stuff what a rebuild I agree with bajadulce that thing must be pretty heavy I wonder if the brick is real? Man I'm just about to turn 65 I not sure I would live long enough to finish a project like that! I have been working on mine for 3 years and it was in pretty good shape.
Derek up North
Bajadulce, yes, I could have done it that way but chose the lazy way and just put a link to the whole folder. I was wondering how people do the 'thumbnails' like I see in the early posts above. The blue camper is a Subaru 360 truck (yes, 360cc engine!). I assume that's not the one you would like to hang out in. Would probably be a bit claustrophobic! Mainah, I find them all by spending far too much time on the net! I think the bricks are the phoney ones you can buy at the renovation centers. I saw listed on CL about a year ago who'd redone the inside of an old C Class MH (not Toyota) using slabs off a bunch of logs. Looked like a log cabin inside, complete with a wood stove. I think I forgot to download the pictures. Too bad. Not likely to see another like it!
Derek up North
Here's another 'find'. No accounting for taste! http://rochester.craigslist.org/rvs/2143781257.html

bajadulce
Ahh the thumbnails are actually "attachments". Speaking of which, I'm going to download the pics from that Craig's List ad and post them in this thread as attachments lol. That camper will eventually get sold and the ad will disappear forever. The pics of this stuff need to be preserved at the expense of server space (all 27 kbytes lol) cause they are that absurd! How the oooo are you finding this stuff? Oh, sorry for my French. I got carried away .. I meant to say oooo not oooo and certainly not oooo" red wheels! Can't be cheap Road Kill Cafe Can't quite figure this one out. I see blood tho. waiter
Got a little work done today. Upgraded the Converter to the new WFCO unit - Took about 2 hours Installed the Wife's cool clock. I put the Outside Air Temperature sensor in the external Refrigerator compartment. I wire tied it against the forward wall . this area should get a reasonable outside temperature, even when the refrigerator is operating. Installed new blinds in the Kitchen and the bathroom. Working on the truck AM/FM radio. The original was a dial one. I'm putting in one that's out of a 94 Camry. Photos later
Derek up North
I just spent a while uploading another set of refurb pictures of a 1986 Four Seasons (with a slide-out?).
