Here is a 3500 watt generator head that bolts to a typical 6 Hp engine for $200

My Kohler engine runs but does not make electricity

Wanting to keep the electric start function of the Kohler engine I am wondering if this would replace the generator part?

This NorthStar™ 3000 Watt generator head is designed as a replacement for portable electric generators that are powered by a 6 HP gas engine and require a J609A engine adaption. Brushless generator heads are proven to be superior in efficiency, performance and lifespan compared to brush-style generator heads.

The "may fit" is the key, the generator designed engines had a tapped crank shaft that fit into the generator end and usually the generator heads had no bearings on the engine end they depend on the engine main bearing for the front support. So if the old Kohler engine has the same tapper and diameter it will at least fit the crank, guess there is no way of knowing it will work with out taking it all apart and being an electrical part there is probably no returns if it does not fit.
