Greetings from North Pole, AK!

As of 12 hours ago I am the new owner of a 1981 Sunrader shorty, my first motorhome. My wife is done with tent camping, and I've been looking for an inexpensive motorhome. When this one popped up I jumped on it for $2,800. Nice steering, good brakes, water pump (sink and shower) works, interior lights and cooking fan and light work well. The stove and I assume the oven work. I need to get smart with the heater to know how to start it.

On the negative side, the top front windows and weather stripping are shot.

Cool rig...

Hello again Toy Pals,

I have a 1990 Americana/Odyssey-Santa Fe, presently in Carson City. I've had her since 2006 and have traveled sea to shining sea and back again. With my Lil Gypsy I'll never be homeless :)

She's been neglected lately and am in the process of shelling out large amounts of TLC at present. I may be posting some questions and requests for some suggestions on what to do to get her back into tip top shape.

Thank you all for sharing!

I myself am In CDA Idaho but my grandmother has the motorhome in the Tacoma area. Im her information and show her how to do everything person eh8ch makes it do difficult being 350 miles away from her. Wish she had someone around the corner to help her out as we bought our 85 new horizon less than a month ago and are still unsure of some things with how they work. She is used to much newer/bigger rigs but decided to downsize as she doesnt travel as much anymore!

hi, i have a 1985 vanguard with a chev full floating axle, dual wheeled. I installed this myself after a near tragic "factory" ha ha ha ha axle failed. I still see these crap axled motorhomes for sale on Kijiji. Be aware, do not test drive or buy without doing your research. My unit, though low mileage, has been nothing but grief. Failures without warning, of the most un-expected items have led to various tows, and abandonment situations on the highway....... A warning......find a legitimate mechanic to thoroughly check the mechanicals of any unit you consider buying. Then find a legitimate RV mechanic to check the RV part of the motorhome. I got stung because I trusted the seller. HA HA. it has cost me thousands over and above the purchase price, but is almost up to a standard of reliability. Do not buy if they have no documentation of maintenance history, upgrades and repair work done. :calm::angry03: :angry03: :angry03::angry03::angry03::angry03::angry03: . :angry2: . On a lighter note, I have noticed a few Toyota Chinooks [1977 and older] four, parked in various places in Alberta. They are parts only, as they are sitting and probably no longer registrable.. they are not mine... and i do not know their status, but I can provide exact locations if anyone is interested.. All the best, uncertain roads ahead...I am currently in Red Deer Alberta Canada.... :bye2:

I'm new, just joined tonite......restoring a 1978 Toyota Chinook......Forgot to take before photos, Cab is in primer now.

I'm in need of an idea to replace the weatherstrip that fits above the cab windshield & the Chinook body.

Is there another place to post this question where I may get more responses?..........thanks, Donnie

We just returned from a family trip up the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Although we've made a couple weekend trips this was my favorite so far. I was really pleased with how the camper handled the backroads we explored and was great to be able to get away from the main tourist points for a couple nights.

We have two . #1 is our first one, a 1984 Dolphin 500 RD, 136,100 miles-we put 58,000 of those miles on it in 6 years. If runs perfect. #2 is a 1994 winnebago Warrior 321RB that we bought three months ago. It had 36,805 miles on it, it now has 40,794 miles. The Dolphin will be for sale once I get current pictures taken. We are located in Grants Pass, Oregon. Darrel & Gun

I now own my second Toy. My first was a 93 Winnie Warrior. I'm sad now that I ever sold it. Bought a 98 Coachmen Class C 32 ft and then a 35 ft Bounder. Never was happy with any except the Warrior. Searched for another Toy. Made a wild trip to Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama chasing down ads from Craigslist, all were trash with lots of rot and wanting $5-6K. Decided not to pay that much for junk. Came back home to Central Fl and continued my search. Finally found a junk one that was cheap enough to do the repairs. I bought a 1987 Coachmen. I always thought that Coachmen was a good brand, but in my opinion now, they are or were not. The original structural design was flawed and the cause of most of the damage I have found.

Haven't named her yet. Should be done with the coach repairs/restoration and redesign on the structure in the next few weeks, then on to the engine that has 89000 miles.

I have to say I knew of most of the damage before I bought it, just didn't know it was from poor design. I worked as an engineer before retiring and I am appalled at the design failures of this coach.

Hi to all ... Our new our family " mum ,dad , 2 boys (6) & (9) is Bonnie she is a 1990 dolphin , bought in Minneapolis from the Cranky Ape auction site , bought site unseen , we drove down from Canada ey & picked her up ... 3 new belts installed before leaving town & 1 can of seafoam in the tank of gas .

She just cruzzzed back the 500 miles back to Manitoba Canada ... Sure is a sweetie !

We removed the old carpet only because we hate carpet & put down some vinyl that we had left over , mum cleaned & freshened up the inside , I got the fridge , stove , furnace , a/c up & running ... The hot water tank was split right open from ice I guess , I got that cleaned up & welded in town , it know works just fine .

I've changed the oil & filters & drained the transmission 2 times & put in a new fuel filter .. Painted the back bumper & put on 2 new flaps.

Installed a fantastic fan in the roof & re sealed the roof even though no signs of water inside .... Only area of past moisture is right at front under window , but very little .. Hose on the window revealed the rubber that holds it in was crappy , so popped it out & reinstalled with sealant.

Plan is for her license inspection tomorrow , then work out how to store fix on a bbq .. Racks for 2 kayaks ... Think how to carry 15 gallons of extra fuel ... Some kind of front brush bar ... & a rear storage box .

Then we will be heading to the south of Mexico in December .

Thanks in advance ... We have had awesome advise already from this community .

Frodo & family

Burbank, Ca.

1986 Toyota Dolphin model 500, high mileage, and plenty of cosmetic issues, but mechanically sound after entirely too much work/money. Our first RV, but we're hooked!

I brought a 1982 Toyota Mini Cruiser for my trip to Burning Man this year and was very happy that it made the 2500 Miles journey back and forth without a problem. What is the best way to winterize the Mini? Any suggestions if it's stored in the garage? :shit:

Downsized from a 2004 Sportsmobile to our new 1987 Sunrader 22re turbo 4x4. Love the layout. Beats the Sportsmobile hands down. Wife can't complain any more about not having a shower! Reliving my youth, I was 17 when this rader rolled out of the factory. This is my third Toyota, still have a 95 tacoma, miss my Hilux in New Zealand, when the Raders gas engine dies (probably never though they are just too dam reliable) I'll drop a diesel in her! Home for now is Olympia WA.

It's a badlands bumper.

http://www.badlandbumpers.com

They are in ravensdale WA. I ordered over the phone, they had the bumper built with whatever options you want, and I drove up and within 45 min. I helped them remove the old and install the new. Shop is in a rural area huge shop top quality equipment. Son did the work he is taking over the business, nice kid and he is into Toyotas and took photos of my turbo injection system and is rebuilding a turbo and running lines from radiator. The Sunrader guy in alaska with the wood stove put me in touch with this company. I get lots of comments about it

Just purchased a 1987 Dolphin that will be residing in Vancouver WA. It will also be seen travelling the highways of the West.

After years of hauling large trailers and fifth wheels, I'm amazed at the drivability, the ease and availabilty of parking. Already it's proven to be a fun puchase.

Hi

my trip to south of england cancelled until further notice (check bbc website). Our far north east corner has escaped the winter until last night. ground soft at 4pm by 10pm had frozen solid even my motorhome didnot leave wheel ruts. waiting to see if snow comes up as far as us. now sitting out next 24hours. today is dubbed wild wednesday by news casters. US storm is now heading NE towards UK and bringing more bad weather. Roll on march when met office thinks this constant roll of low pressures will end. then i can get down to some upgrades of my toy. ie new led lighting kitchen refurb (paint/cover) finish over cab bed extension. lay new carpet from drivers cab to bathroom remove roof aircon unit. seal roof and paint. Give roof a mini apex to help rain run off rather than pool. etc etc.
