Wingard and digital TV

Then go with option B, an issue in the tuner. Audio for that channel is slammed right up against the bottom of the FM band and it wouldn't take much for something to drift ever so slightly as to drop it. I say this only because it is an end of band channel and the only one with an issue. Haven't looked at the schematic for this nor worked on a tuner in forever so these are just guesses because you asked. I only know the basics on how HDTV transmits and only out of curiosity I looked when it first was proposed. I stopped watching television 2 years ago, even the news and am so much happier and relaxed. (though will catch an occasional football game) I want the weather, I have a app for that.

Every time I hear "app" - it makes me laugh a bit. Just another marketing BS scheme that seems to have worked (calling a computer program an "app" to make it appeal to a younger generation). But yeah, my Android Mini has all sorts of little "programs" that can do neat things. Most of which I don't care about. But . . . recently I was trying to scan some black and white photo negatives in a flatbed scanner with NO success. So I searched on-line and found out people were doing it with their little "devices" by turning them into dull full-screen lights. So I downloaded a "little program" for my Android and tried it. WORKED GREAT. Just turned on the light for the full screen, laid it on top of the negative and then scanned it.

When this TV sound problem first surfaced - I was convinced the problem had to be inside that TV. Still am. I had bought two new Sansui TVs at the same time. A 19" and a 32" and both with built-in DVD players. One worked fine with channel 6 and the other did not. I asked Sansui tech over and over if the two TVs had the same tuner chips but never got an answer. And when I got an engineer at the WRGB Channel 6 engineering department - he said it was impossible for them to send a signal that was defective in a way to cause my problem True or not - I do not know.

At the time, Channel 6 was the only channel I cared to watch because it ran classic (old) TV shows and I liked to watch Perry Mason every night at 11 PM. THAT I miss. I always had a thing for Della Street - although she's an old bag now.

The thing is audio is a separate digital mpeg stream in its own band space. The video carrier for channel 6 is lower at 82 MHz. Audio is only 250KHz away from where FM starts. Where as every other channel works all I could think would be a constricted band somehow from maybe a filter circuit somewhere. From a "repair it" perspective, this pretty much gives you nothing but you said you wanted an explanation and this one is as plausible as any. Typically any instability in a tuner circuit such as drift would manifest itself with all channels so this is likely an edge case problem. (read quality control)

My wife insists on staying up to watch the news because she wants to see the weather. She has a laptop, tablet and phone. The weather is available 24/7. I see it like this, I carry a super computer in my pocket. I use an app (chuckle if you want to) called Accuweather. I like how it quickly gives me a snap shot of what is happening on the horizon.

Giving up television for me was a lifestyle choice. My son and I don't watch any. Wife and daughter are deeply invested. The family room has the 70" along with Tivo and a Roku. The wife is subscribed to Hulu+, Netflix, Amazon Prime and even some Korean streaming services. The DVR in there gets quite a workout and I pay for a top tier internet package as they eat up data. The TV package is down to the bare basic as they only need local channels. We are a long way out from Boston with hills in the way. Over the air is not in the cards for me.

My wife and I both have Android Minis and she also has a Kindle. But those "devices" only work when there is internet access which we do not get at our house unless I have the signal-amp turned on. No cell, data, or Internet coverage at our house without the roof-top yagi antennas and several amps of different frequency ranges. Even our home phone (Verizon Home-Phone wireless Connect) requires an antenna on the roof to work. So TV is easier since that amp is on all the time. We get many channels from over 100 miles distant along with a few analog TV channels from Canada. Hard to conceive of too many areas in New England that can't get over-the-air TV with a good set of antennas and amps - but I suppose there are a few dark holes somewhere. My place in central New York has no line-of-sight to any TV transmitters and we were surrounded by woods and mountaintops. Still managed to get half-a-dozen channels with some work - and none were closer then 65 miles. Only place I've been so far where I could get near nothing was in the middle of the woods in the New York Adirondacks. With a large UHF antenna mounted 30 feet high along witth a 30 dB preamp - we were able to get just one station - PBS. Seems government funded PBS comes in near anywhere.

While I could probably make it work, I don't watch it. Therefore no incentive for me to go through the trouble. Doubt my wife would think only local was a good idea. Peace in the household is probably worth the cable bill.

I live where LTE just about ends before you go further west. Phones and tablet are connected, have tethering for both personal and work phones and carry a mifi. I'm covered on AT&T and Verizon (I have a job where they insist I'm always reachable and they pay for it). If we are someplace where one doesn't work, the other usually does. There are places where we go with no coverage. Part of the reason for going is to unplug. Being connected along the way tends to be handy though.

I have to admit my TV watching amounts to about 7 hours a week. How ever if I could get PBS I probably would watch more TV. Be glad you don't live in rural Maine.

I was camping near Rockland Maine during the last presidential campaign and was blown away by actually seeing a few TV politcal ads that did NOT make republicans look like Satan-followers. In fact, the local news there actually had the NERVE to be a bit critical of Lord Obummer. I found it very refreshing after listening/watching New York TV with news, TV commentaries, and PBS clap-trap that was and still is heavily biased towards the Democrat/Socialist/Liberal side.

At least the TV news I saw in Maine had some balance to it - as it also does here in Michigan. I love some of the British TV shows on PBS - but the rest can be all sh*t-canned, in my humble opinion. The idea that they claim to be unbiased is enough to make a maggot puke. They should be forced to be though - considering they only exist because of tax-payer support.

Jdemaris you would love it here in Maine right now we have a mentally disturbed Republican Governor that has managed to embarrass the people of Maine worldwide with his bonehead statements. He isn’t even liked by the Republicans any more.

Now you've got me interested. I haven't heard a word about it. I don't get much Maine news. Last funny thing I heard specific to Maine was the big "topless lawn-mowing" contraversy when some woman kept mowing her lawn while topless and it got some people upset. Heck - if she was cute - I would not complain.

Of course - now adays - having one republican not liked by others is not always an indcator that the guy is bad. Some of the best ones right now - e.g. Rand Paul, Tted Cruz and Rick Perry are hated by the mainstream republicans and I'd vote of any of them in an instant. Scott Walker too if he'd run.

As far as LaPage he has done so many bazar things I don't know where to start. He has made international news many times and I'm sure there are more to come. It's good reading just google him.

The only one I've heard that put LePage on the radar screen was his spat with Stephen King. He accused King of fleeing to Florida to avoid taxes. A little fact checking on LePage's part would have informed the governor that King is still a Maine resident and had paid 1.4 million in taxes for 2013.

I might head up to Saco to visit friends in a couple weeks. I've not been for a couple years but really like the southern coastal region.

I never heard of him until you mentioned his name. I did a quick Google search and found the "top ten" so-called "outragious" things he has done. I read through them and researched each one for context and pretty much agree with everything he did and/or said. Certainly saw no behavior to indicate he is "metally ill." Looks more like he really speaks what is on his mind and is overt about his intentions. Unlike many if not most politicians that choose every word carefully amd never let their true intent show. From what I've seen and read about him so far - I wish HE was the president. But - like I said - all I "think I know" is what I read in a quick search.

"It turns out that many Mainers embraced the key goals of LePage’s governorship: cutting taxes, environmental and labor regulations, welfare services, and public spending—supposedly among the principal obstacles to improving the state’s economy, which has been sluggish for the past 150 years or so. He’s delivered on many of those promises, signing a $150 million tax cut, the largest in state history, which reduced the top income tax rate and doubled the estate tax exemption from $1 million to $2 million. He refused to expand Medicaid, vetoing five legislative bills to do so, imposed a five-year limit on welfare benefits, and vigorously investigated welfare fraud and abuse—allegedly to stop Maine from being a welfare “destination state.” He also repealed laws restricting big box stores and mining."

  1. Telling President Obama to "go to hell."
  1. "Kiss my butt." In 2011, LePage's decision not to attend Martin Luther King Day ceremonies in Portland and Bangor hosted by NAACP groups became a source of tension.
  1. Comparing IRS to Gestapo. In 2012, LePage said, "What I am trying to say is the Holocaust was a horrific crime against humanity and, frankly, I would never want to see that repeated. Maybe the IRS is not quite as bad — yet."
  1. "Women may have little beards." LePage in 2011 dismissed concerns about the chemical BPA in plastic bottles, saying: "The only thing that I’ve heard is if you take a plastic bottle and put it in the microwave and you heat it up, it gives off a chemical similar to estrogen. So the worst case is some women may have little beards."

6. A fear of newspapers. LePage said in February that his "greatest fear in the state of Maine" is "newspapers." He added: "If they were fair and balanced, I would be a supporter."

He is about to be impeached. The off the wall comments are only a small part of the problem.

Well unless things have changed - impeachment just means his behavior will get some sort of judicial review which could wind up being in his favor. Kind of reminds me of the "recall" election for Scott Walker in Wisconsin - conducted by ultra-liberal Democrats that backfired in their faces.

Not when you threaten withholding 1/2 a million dollars of state funding because you don't like the guy that applied for a job, he lost the job by the way a day before he was to start he rightfully so is suing. Or vetoing every single bill because you don't like the opposition even though it was a bi partition vote (that did not endear him to the Republicans they helped over turn the veto's) or refuse to distribute money that was a referendum public vote. The list goes on. It's best you don't argue state politics unless you live there.

We are not arguing "state politics" as far as I can tell. We are discussing one man's behaviour that you say is "mentally ill." Regardless - I doubt you have any better access to "inside" information as a resident of Maine - as I do as an "outsider." I certain don't have any "behind the scenes" information on what goes on in my state as a Michigan resident, nor do I have any such info about President Obumer as a USA citizen. I will suppose go by what you hear reported by others, just like I do - on TV, on the Net, or where ever.

I'm tired of repeating myself. If you 2 would like to chat about politics you can send a message privately. A thread about receiving TV in our motorhomes does NOT include a discussion about everything that's ever been on TV or your political views.
