Renovating the Over cab bed & surrounding walls water damage—

Recommended Posts

So I new not only to this forum but to being an owner of a Toyota mini motorhome.

There’s so many forum topics that I’ve been reading for what feels like days & some things I have yet to find.
Hence why I’m posting this one.

I’d appreciate all the help, advice, tips, suggestions, etc that I can get!
Keep in mind that Although I’ve decided to take this on, I’m as green as the grass outside....in other words—dumb it down for me please!!
Pretend you’re explaining things to a 5 year old....🤷🏼‍♀️😂

I knew I’d have water damage & of course when I start pulling out the panels in the over the cab bed area—I hit the mother load.

**Is it possible to cover the larger window in the front of the cab (one facing straight out to the road)??  If so, HOW?!?  I’d prefer it gone completely but I don’t have the skills to do that— covering it on the outside to help minimize water entering the area & to block the heat & cold is what I’m after.

It has an aluminum frame in the bed area which is awesome for me, a beginner, but I’m not sure what plywood to use for the bed area. Also found some areas of the ceiling that need replacing & would appreciate any advice on how to approach that as well as type of plywood & type of panels to use as the outer, interior walls.
I’m painting all of the interior so I not looking for anything more than what’s best to use for this purpose as well as structurally sound.

Insulation suggestions for all areas—walls, bedding area & ceiling.

I am also going to remove the old vent fans on the roof (and ac) replacing with ones that help circulate air, help with condensation &  cooling the Inside.
Suggestions PLEASE!

I spoke with an rv guy in the area about the roof (roof is aluminum) and he said my best bet would be to reseal/caulk everything, use eternabond tape if needed, then cover with Dicor Elastomeric Metal RV Roof Coating. So planning to do this but was wondering if anyone else has done this & if so, any tips, suggestions, etc on whether there’s anything else (possibly not so expensive) that works as well.

Anything else that you might think of that could help me— please don’t hesitate to tell me.

Blocking the front window has been done. Make, model, year and a photo of the front from the outside.

HEY THERE. i have a 1992 winnie warrior . i discovered water damage to the cabover area last summer. i took my rig to an rv repair shop for the rebuild. i know that the damage usually is extensive, as was the case with my rig. this rebuild is not impossible to do yourself, many posts here describe the process and provide help, advice and photos to guide someone with the process.  i would suggest spending some time researching posts here on the forum from owners who have completed this rebuild in order to get an idea of what problems you will encounter. in my humble opinion, the most challenging aspect is replacing the outer covering. typically this material is a sheet product known as FILON. the difficulty is due to the curve of the cabover and trying to secure the filon properly. if you have some handyman skills, or know someone who has some skills, that would help. you will save a ton of money doing it yourself. good luck. hope to see some pics of your project as you proceed. hope this helps. joe from dover.

You might consider this product for bed platform instead of plywood. It will never rot. Frp panels can be used for interior walls and purchased from depot. You will probably find more rot on walls in overbed area. If the framing in bed area is rotted don't use pine but cedar or a hardwood like oak or maple.

Great idea on covering window. Others have posted on covering window with fiberglass cloth and polyester resin or epoxy resin. Read their posts. A boat repair place could assist you better than an rv place.

The Roof resealing advice is also good idea.
