just returned from 4 days at Shawnee state park, located near Portsmouth, ohio. chose this campground due to close proximity to Portsmouth (13 miles). Portsmouth has the distinction of being home to the oldest brewery (est.1843) in ohio. although not authenticated, it is rumored to be the 2nd oldest commercial brewery in the U.S., had a wonderful private tour of the brewery by the brew master. lot of history associated with the brewery. the campground was very clean, and had very recently updated all electric hook ups. a swimming and fishing lake was a short walk from our site. facilities, shower house and bathrooms were clean and functional. I plan my trips to commence at the beginning of the week and leave before the week end crowds show up. we basically had the area to ourselves, which made for a very relaxing , quite, 4 days. staff at the park were very helpful. one negative was lack of cell service. the only location where cell service was available was near the entrance. joe from dover.
