GPS_yota Posted February 25, 2018 Share Posted February 25, 2018 Hey everyone, I've got a problem that I haven't been able to solve through independent research. I need to get my Dolphin through smog testing. The problem is my exhaust system is leaking where the air injection system joins the exhaust maifold. Now, because it's a 1984 22r with Cali emissions it seems to be a bit different from the usual. So there is some type of dimple, hole, and gasket where the pipe is clamped down to the manifold. The gasket (or something shaped like a tapered ball) has corroded or failed so that I have exhaust leaking out. The repair shop couldn't figure it out and their temporary fix failed, so I'm back with the leak again. My goal is to identify what the internal gasket or ball piece is called so I can order a new one, but I haven't found a match yet. Any ideas? Thanks! GPS_yota Posted February 26, 2018 Author Share Posted February 26, 2018 I believe those are for the usual toyota injection manifolds, but mine takes something different. The ones on my truck use a tapered conical insert rather than a flate plate. In any case, the last repair shop tried to use regular gaskets but the exhaust leak came back pretty soon afterwards. Go to a Toyota dealer with the part numbers and have them bring them up on their computer. Hey they are all pretty cheap. GPS_yota Posted March 4, 2018 Author Share Posted March 4, 2018 Okay, I have updates on the air tube repairs. I did order the gaskets, and they were the correct parts. However, time or injury has made the mating surfaces on my truck grow far apart so the gasket could not seal the gap. It looks like the previous owners had stacked several layers to seal it, but with limited success. So my repair attempt was to use high temp putty packed between two layers of foil, to get a press fit and fill up any cavity. After hardening, I took apart and then used super high-temp sealant on top & bottom, then reassembled. I know it looks ugly, but I'm happy with the results.
